If you join a gym, and then a squash/tennis/badminton league if you find
yourself enjoying it, is that taking that way too seriously?
Clans aren't for me - I don't have the time. But I do see a benefit in
enjoying games between a group of friends outside of the public arena.

Dave,
If you've ever tried playing DoD/CS online you'll recognise that 50% of the
time you join a public server then it's full of idiots, and even when the
people are ok then people always play entirely for themselves, generally
ignoring the team objectives.
Joining a small clan has less to do with spending your life in front of your
PC and more to do with finding a decent group of people to spend your gaming
time with.

Sounds to me like you take everything a little too serious...

Must be a new fashion. Useful is the new black, or something. Don't panic
everyone, it won't last.

Improve in what way? If you want to be the kill leader, the
clans will recruit you if you play on public servers.
There are other servers, such as "MM!! Mike's Marauders", that
attempt for a team-play sort of atmosphere and if you don't get the
K/D ratio or capture all the flags it really doesn't matter, so long
as you play in support of your team. Several others follow this same
idea. Generally each has a group of regular players and if you're
a regular, well, that's pretty darned close to a clan without the
hassle of matches and team practice.
Disclaimer: I'm an admin on a couple of DoD servers, one
is clan-based the other team-based. I mention Mike's because it's
one of the few with clan tags sported by regular players but they
don't operate as a clan. It might be worth checking out.
