Half-Life 1: Problem ESCaping/resuming games

I've reinstalled Half-Life 1 (upgraded to v1.1.1.0) on the following machine:

* 1800+ Athlon
* Radeon 9800 Pro
* Windows XP SP1

When I use the ESC key to escape from a game to the menu,
and then resume the game (either with the Resume option, or
by pressing ESC again), I'm presented with a static back/grey
background, with the text "v46/1.1.1.0". However, I can still
hear the game and control the character.

Does anyone know of a fix for this? I had it with my
last video card as well (GeForce2 Ti).

Thanks,

P.

Try using DirectX rendering. OpenGL will sometimes have this trouble.

I had a similar problem when I first installed HL on a new 3GHz
computer...make sure it's all patched up, and then play with the graphics
rendering options to see which API works best, DirectX or OpenGL.  It'll
take some trial and error, but one or the other will probably perform better
and if the game is patched up (is it 1.1.1.0?), it should work for you.

Thanks; while experimenting it turned out that was the solution;
I switched from using DX to OpenGL. I'd initially selected
DX since I'd heard that Radeon supported that better than
OpenGl, but in fact in OpenGL I can get 1600x1200 while in
DX, the maximum is 1280x1024.

I have the same problem using OpenGL.  Using D3D it doesn't do that.
Have FX5900.
