OT: EVE Online and MMORPGs

Me again,

I know Strider tried EVE and didn't like it, but I tried the demo and I'm hooked
:)  Yes me, who doesn't like online games.  Very friendly people online, it
looks beautiful (the main reason I wanted to try it), and it runs very well on a
dial-up connection, which was the biggest surprise to me.  The combat doesn't
require an awful lot of input (just lock target and switch the guns on), but
that's probably what makes it easy to run on a mid to low-end system.  It
reminds me of Privateer (more than Elite), with the addictiveness of trading and
mining in order to fund bigger and better upgrades for your ship.  It seems like
there's some politics and intrigue going on at the upper levels, but I'm just
trying to survive the asteroid belts for now.

So, what are these other MMORPGs like, then?  SW Galaxies and that other one
with the pretty pictures that Anders posted a while back?  Are they better?
Who's playing them from here?  Any AGHL groups formed within online worlds?

Your post reminded me I downloaded the client software last week.... then
forgot about it :)

Having just installed and signed on:-

Pro's
Good graphics
Good help system and tutorial
Looks like a game with loads of depth, the options are bewildering..
equipment, skills choices, races, etc (read: I have probably created a
useless character because I didn't bother reading the forums for guidelines
:)

Con's
I was hoping for a first person flight model (ala elite or X2 - the threat)
rather than 'homeworld' point and click, but reckon I will at least carry on
playing for the first month.
Why does it start out in 'Windowed' mode???

Whoop, Strider and a few other's are (were?) playing SWG (probably on
different servers though), I have been very tempted, but put off by early
bug reports, the lack of drivable craft, and reports of it taking ages on
the 'levelling treadmill' to get to a stage when you can actually do
something interesting.

I was looking to join a fantasy MMORPG myself, haven't played in years, have
looked at 'Dark Age of Camelot', seems ok if somewhat of a hackfest. All the
bigger ones I have no or little knowledge of, like everquest or ultima
online etc.

I pretty much agree with that. I also want a sequel to elite where I can
dogfight.

Well I don't play any MMORPG at the minute but once again I must pimp
Carom3D pool. It's an online pool game and great fun:

You've prolly tried 'em all, but just in case you haven't: X2,
Battlecruiser Millennium/Universal Combat, Starshatter.

I've only peeked at Starshatter so far but the blurb seems to fit. The same
for the other two, to varying degrees.

On second thought, strike Starshatter. Read up a bit more and seems it's
not as freeform as I first thought.

Apart from X2 I've not played them. I played X2's predecessor in X
Beyond the frontier. What I'm really looking for is a MMORPG based
around elite.
I suspect the others you mentioned aren't MMORPG?

What's X2 like?  The reviews are poles apart.  Some say it's the best thing
ever, others say the interface is so clunky that it kills the game.  What's your
view?

Is it just me, or does Starshatter sound a bit scatological?

X2

Great graphics, etc blah..
The interface is very clunky - ie just plain bad.....(it could have been
great - but the whole game is to much effort)

Don't buy it now - bargain bin game maybe.

Well I downloaded it thinking it was MMORPG so I was always going to be
dispointed. The interface was chunky mind.

It didn't stay on my PC long.

Nope they're not. Of course, neither was Elite :) I remember drooling over
a 2400 baud modem for my C64 at that time (at least I think it was 2400).

Anways, I didn't realize you wanted it to be MMO. In can only think of two
off the top of my head that are space based trading type games. Eve and
Earth & Beyond. Tested the first briefly in early beta. Could barely get
online so can't claim much knowledge of it. E&B I bought out of Elite
nostalgia and regretted it enough to uninstall it after about two weeks.
Horribly shallow game.

Tbh, that's my experience with all MMO games to date. The level treadmill
(bash badguy, buy bigger gun/sword/ship, bash bigger badguy to get bonus
etc) doesn't do it for me. Neither does the aspect of a graphical chat
client. The first I can do offline just fine if I so wish (Diablo or
whatever). If I want chatting I'll go on IRC. So what does that leave me
with for an MMO? Not a whole lot. A monthly expenditure for playing a game
that viewed purely as a game is mediocre at best.

I personally hold much higher hopes of a single player game fulfilling my
Elite cravings than an MMOG (I omitted the RP on purpose since there's
precious little of it going on in most MMO games). Something like a merge
between Battlecruiser and X2 would be close to perfect I suspect.

Hm, ok, that's my tirade of the day. I'll slink back to my corner now and
hope someone else has actual suggestions for you as opposed to a rant like
mine.

Ah, don't be too hard on yourself, Frode - your rants are getting
better each time. Most informative as well. I had to agree with this
one especially, even though I've never played a MMO game... I prefer
the idea of smaller online encounters between people I trust. Friday CS
games were the height of that, and the aghl NWN games come close.

Did you do that last Saturday?  I saw a Sloth when I first joined.  Was going to
say "hi" on the off-chance it was you, but the player disappeared before I could
figure out how you do that :)  If you're on, look for Qahan Varasal, in the good
ship "Glamorous Glennis II".  Catchy huh?

You forgot the character portrait thing.  That's brilliant!  I could spend hours
messing with that, without even playing the game :)  Games like NWN could really
do with a feature like that.

The depth is astounding, not just in-game, but in the web community that
surrounds it.  Far too much to take in.  I still haven't figured out whether the
news items are just for background atmosphere, or actually reflect something
that's going on in the game (or are seeds for adventuring opportunities).

I think that puts many people off, but how viable is a MMOG that allows you to
use hand-eye coordination skills as you would in a shooter?  I don't know how
other MMOGs work, but there are over 7000 people on the single EVE server,
compared to, say, about 2 dozen on BF1942 servers.  No wonder they went for this
style of play.  As a result, the game plays very well on a dial-up connection,
something I wouldn't have thought was possible (another Pro).  The game is more
about galactic trade and personal interaction between players than it is about
combat.  I would imagine most MMOGs are similar, but maybe the space genre leads
you into thinking that dogfighting is possible.

> Why does it start out in 'Windowed' mode???

Dunno, but you can change it to full screen in the options.  Took me ages to
find that without a manual, but you just press Esc :)  Incidentally, you can add
more graphics options by adding the line "advancedDevice=1" (no quotes) to the
prefs.ini file in the Cache folder.  I was getting stripey textures and no FSAA,
but this sorted it out for me, and now it looks gorgeous :)

I was put off by monthly fees and the thought of having to be online almost
constantly, but I seem to have overcome those fears :)  Have they got driveable
vehicles in SWG now?

Of the ones I've played, Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies, Final
Fantasy XI and of course, Eve.

For me Sloths 'cons' for Eve stand up well. I also was looking for more
of an Elite model. Ultima Online is a well crafted game and is showing
it's age. It's successor Ultima X: The Oddysey looks very good though:
http://www.uxo.ea.com/

Star Wars Galaxies is an extremely impressive game on many accounts.
However if you play a combative class in the RPG vein then you'll find
few 'quests' that are actually rewarding. The crafting classes involved
in creating the majority of the games items to be bought and used often
have a more enjoyable game as that aspect looks more complete.

Final Fantasy XI is a very solid RPG but one I just found arduous in the
end.

I think it was Final Fantasy XI that Anders was showing screenies from.  It
looked lovely, but no idea what it's all about.  The game I'm thinking of had
some kind of low-crawling crustacean as a character.

It's a couple of years old, and I've only just installed it myself, so I can't
vouch for it, but have you tried Independence War 2?  I picked it up for ?5 in
Game this week.  The original, I-War, was one of my favourite games in its time,
and the realistic space combat physics model carries on in this game, as do the
very nice spacey graphics and expensive-looking cutscenes.  Don't know if
there's any Elite-style trade, though (there wasn't in the original, it was a
fixed storyline, but well told)

I'm still playing FFXI, which is my second MMORPG (Galaxies being the
first). It has it's flaws, but I like the fantasy genre and I like the
FF series, so I'm still having fun.

Well, they really should have called FFXI Final Fantasy Online,
because that's what it is. I have no idea why they decided to name
them like that. FFX2 is 'just' another installment in the series, ie
singleplayer and nothing online. I haven't actually played FFX2 yet,
but that's what I've been told.
