Nick - 19 Feb 2004 10:59 GMT Apologies in advance - this subject has probably been done to death but....
I have an old M$ Intellimouse Explorer USB thang, which has served me well over the past few years, but has one problem (which I know is common to this particular type of mouse) - if I move the mouse too quickly in HL (or TFC) then I usually end up looking at something I didn't intend too - often it's the ceiling...
So, question is - do the newere optical meeces solve this problem? I'm thinking of getting M$'s newest Wireless Intellimouse Explorer: <http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid= 002> Does anyone have this mouse and are they experiencing this problem with it?
Cheers, Nick

In my case it turned out to be a mouse mat which had reflective qualities. Your mat (or table) needs to be dark blue/brown/black with no 'shiney bits'
The Blueyonder mouse mat is especially bad.

Civilian_Target - 19 Feb 2004 17:55 GMT Its generally a sign of either shiny mouse mat (as strider says) or the optical engine not being able to keep up. I've actually used my MX700 on a plate glass mirror and it worked, but not very well. But I've never had that swivel problem.

Ben Cottrell - 19 Feb 2004 23:17 GMT I used to get this problem (I have one of the original Intellimouse Explorers too - still going after 4 and a half years of use and abuse - but its looking rather tatty these days, and the mousewheel has become a bit iffy from time to time).. I don't remember what fixed it .... I still use the surface of my desk to run the mouse on and always have done... I thought it was something about moving the mouse too quickly if you had a very high sensitivity setting in HL or in Windows. I only know that it doesnt happen any more (perhaps it was the old Intellipoint drivers that had a problem?)

Nick - 20 Feb 2004 09:07 GMT Ben, sounds like the same mouse, and yes, it's looking tatty now - gone quite grey, but it's still working just as well as ever.
Yup, the problem I describe occurs when I move the mouse too fast - but I only have the sensitivity set to 2 in HL and have left the default settings under XP (which should mean I'm using a fairly recent driver too, no?) Plus I've always used a non-shiny soft finish mouse pad... ah well, maybe I'll just try a new mouse ;o)
Cheers all!

Possibly not. I've got XP & an Intellimouse optical & the installed software is version 3, with drivers from April 2002.
The latest software is version 5, but I don't know what the driver date on that is yet.

Oops, turns out I was using an Intellimouse Explorer 3, but the driver has now updated to May 2003.

Now here's a thing (that I might have tried before...)
I tried using my kids' M$ optical laptop mouse thingy and... couldn't get the problem to occur. So I guess that means I need a new mouse.
Anyway, thanks all for your input!

Superb mouse, get a jet black cloth or one of those funky expensive mats and your all set ;p

Has two additional programmable buttons. I just use a standard mouse mat - nowt fancy.
It's annoying - you can adjust all the mouse settings so they're perfect in one game, but go to another game and they're all different. Mods are sort of the same - Heart of Evil completely messes with the settings so the mouse is unusuable. The mouse sensitivity (I have it near maximum) is the most important setting - that and the axis.

b0yce - 25 Feb 2004 11:27 GMT Getting a decent MouseMat is a definate Must. If you live in the UK go here;
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Gaming_Surfaces_32.html
Otherwise do a www.froogle.com search for a mouse mat called "RatPad". Here's an online review

That said, I'd strongly recommend dabs.com and komplett.co.uk to anyone, and in the same vein suggest
a) Do not buy MSI (shoddy shoddy build quality, cheap components used, very noisy for what they do) b) Do not buy Coolermaster (Again, build quality takes the piss) c) Do not buy codegen (powersupplys that claim 360W and have the output of 160W)

b0yce - 26 Feb 2004 10:28 GMT Yeah cheers for the support of confidence. FYI - I have never had a problem with OverClocker's neither. Plus the dated post was June 8th 2003. So over 6 months ago. I am sure that they are more capable now - unless you can post another TinyURL to prove me wrong. :-)
Anyway - I would recommend RatPad, as in my previous post, but I couldn't find a stockist off-hand, so just posted a link to OverClockers for other mousemats.

And neither have I with Ebuyer.com but they're also reputed to have a poor after sales service. The point I'm making is, if you want to deal with a company which will almost certainly let you down if the goods are faulty at least deal with a company which reflects that to some degree in the price.
