Have we had a Halo thread recently? Dunno..here's one anyway.
I bought it on Saturday (SUPASHOPPA ALERT) for under ?20 from Tesco's and
have seen it since in two other places for over thirty quid!!
So get your club card out and get down there cos it's really quite cool.
I'm up to level four so far, The Silent Cartogropher, and am having a blast!
Downpoints I have to admit to, include, the lack of a quicksave by having to
rely on checkpoints, the very linear aspect of the game with only one route
to the next objective, it's hunger for system resources, the HUD aim cursor
and lack of objects/npc's to interact with... or am I asking too much?
On the upside, I've had hours of great fun zapping the evil Covenant horde,
tho I do have to keep stopping cos I don't think my Ti 4200 can quite keep
up with it and it does my head in. But even with everything turned to low or
minimum, the graphics are great.
That said, it is great fun, honest. Current kicks are being got by ramming
the aliens with the driveable Warthog instead of getting out and shooting
them.
I think what provides a lot of the enjoyment tho is the pure deathmatch
scenario that takes over whenever a shootout with the aliens is required.
Oh hell... I like it...and i cant be arsed to write anymore.

    Not that I recall.

I purchased it a couple of months ago in the USA and spent
probably four evenings going through it.  At first it was quite fun,
the graphics quite nice, the plotline somewhat lacking but the
challenge quite intense.  By day 3, I was bored.  OK, I turn this
corner and there's thirty enemy to kill.  Finish with them, another
20 will be waiting beyond that corner, and I *have* to go around it.

By day 4 I was just bored as hell and completed the game only
because if I didn't I'd have wasted four evenings of my life on this
spinning mudball with nothing to show for it.

It's not as varied as Half-Life was.  There's no transition
from aliens to marines to Zen and all the fun of meeting new creatures
with different weapons and tactics.  It's two sets of critters, a
lot of walking around killing them, and a final scripted ending.

The best part was the first level, where you run around without
a weapon to the sounds of firing within the ship.  That was tense.
After that, it was run and gun for three more days.

Four days? f.ck me...the demo bored me to tears and ran like a pig. Linear,
outdated, basically, shite.

Had it come out when it was actually made, maybe things would of been
different.

I played the first level, got out of the ship, got into the second
level, got as far as going down into the tunnel.  Then quit playing the
sp game.  I play mostly Blood Gulch online with a clientside server I
run, occasionally Death Island and rarely Sidewinder, Infinity and
Danger Canyon.  That's it.  The game is exactly what you guys said,
repetitious, needlessly linear and difficult.  Challenging yes, fun no.
8 to 10 folks in Blood Gulch with all vehicles and weaps, no time limit,
Team, unlimited grenades, and this can be fun.
But it looks like UT2004 may take the FUN honors with the Onslaught team
game :)  Even the botmatch in Onslaught is fun.  Gotta get this one!

Don't bother
16 players max
Limited Maps (bad mappers?) huge outdoor enviroment - compared to HL
Lots of nice eyecandy - explosions etc
Fun to drive the warhog over players though

But in all playing HL DM or actually any HL MP is above and beyond in
experience - imho

Halos outdoor maps are not that big.  There is very little open space in
any of them except Sidewinder.  And that's all ice.  I can think of a
lot of HL levels that are bigger and more fun.  It just didn't play as
well MP and doesn't have the vehicles.

I can't recall the map names now (haven't got Halo on my laptop)
But there's one with a fortress in both ends, the area is enclosed within
high mountains
I don't HL can cope with a setup like that

Yep that's another story :-)

Ocasionally idiotic AI

Btw if one has a decent machinery you could set up some Slayer
But the limit is on 16 players

Oh and I meant standard shoot-em-up fair. The Deathmatch was actually
quite good.

But the decent maps are small enough that 16 can be a crowd :)

There's no such creature!

And yes, we have had a few threads on Halo, with feelings running
pretty high. Strider, Frode and especially Marlin hated it; I loved it
and I think Anders did too.

If you don't like shooting, why buy a game subtitled 'Combat evolved'?

Who..me or Farrell? I love it, didn't say I didn't. It just makes for a
refreshing change to run them over, because some of 'em are nimble little
critters and the chase is often challenging!! Just gives my trigger finger a
well deserved rest! I really do like the game so far. (level 5 now!!)

I can't wait till someone mods it so you can shoot the gatling gun or RL
while driving :)

There is a mod out where you can drive in the gunner's seat
Check eg fileplanet

Not entirely true. Continuing my trend for fence-sitting I think Halo
has many nice features. Unfortunately very few of those in the single
player game.

Maybe you're more likely to like the multi player game if you like the
single player?

I did, but it was a brief affair and I'm over it now. If they had
released the mod tools, like they promised, then I would probably
still be playing it, but with HL2 and UT2K4 on the way, it's pretty
dead.

It's a joke - comes from Red Vs Blue - http://www.redvsblue.com
It's when they're discussing the name of the Warthog in episode 2...
