I just preordered HL2, but since it looks like Ill have a few more months
(at a minimum) before the game comes out, Im now thinking of what I need to
have to play the game.I presently have an nVidia Quadro NVS 280 (AGP8x w/
64MB video RAM).  This was the integrated video card on my motherboard.  I
didnt want to drop cash on a video card until I ran into a game that
required something more.  Now this video card is no gaming video card, it
does perform fairly well.  Do you think it will stand up to HL2, or will I
probably need to upgrade?  If I do upgrade, any chance of a ~$100 video card
meeting HL2s requirements?  I cant find anything about HL2s requirements
anywhere on the web.

Try the FarCry demo, because if you can run FarCry you can certainly
run HL2.

POP doesn't exactly push a system, but it does use shaders.

I tried the Far Cry Demo and thou it was intense the "Call of Duty"
(retail version) tested my 'puter more... The fan on my video card
literally screamed in some parts of it... I built a new machine from
scratch this time instead of my normal upgrading...

P4 3Ghz chip
Asus P4C00 Deluxe MB
1 gig DDR3200 RAM
Asus Radeon 9800XT 256mb
Sony DVD-CD RW
160 gig WD HD
Purdy Black box with a transparent side and sexy flashing lights...
Drives Lady Fodder nuts.... :)

Unfortunately I've just about reached the end of my gaming days due to
a neurological problem that's been creeping up on me... :( Oh well,
sh.t happens.... :)

Call Of Duty doesn't use any advanced shaders so results will be very
different than HL2.

That's damn shiny. Hope it's attached to a nice screen, keyboard and
mouse. IMHO the most important bits of a computer are the ones that
you touch and see.

But don't try telling that to someone who's out of hard drive
space....

Ah but CT, do those nice important flashy bits keep your attention
whilst waiting on the unimportant CPU, Ram, Video, Hd's?  ;o)  Heh!

Meh. I'd prefer the setup I have now over fodders machine attached to
a single 15" goldfish bowl of a CRT, a €2 ball mouse and a crap
keyboard. But it's fodder, so I'm guessing 20" flatscreen CRT, MX700
mouse and a mechanical action keyboard at a calorie a press and
braille on top of the letters :)

Cannon Fodder - 09 Feb 2004 01:17 GMT
HeHe... 17" Viewsonic TFT, a black cordless MS keyboard and
mouse...... The cordless gives no lag by the way.... The mouse is
heavy which is great for me due to my old man tremors....

Meh. I head M$ without wires aren't all that great, it certainly seems
that way on paper anyway. I've got an MX700 and it's great, it also
weighs a fair bit, but it's got a liberal dolsch of telfon on the
bottom to keep it movin' easy :)

As for the TFT, why? You don't have to worry about eye cancer, and I'm
sure you've got no shortage of desk space, if my desk wasn't so small
I'd have a 19" CRT on it already.

Civilian_Target
Cannon Fodder - 10 Feb 2004 02:42 GMT
Nope, I don't worry about anyting... Doc sez I'm immortal...

Desk space is a problem, Lady Fodders and my desk face each other so
we can communicate and that places my monitor 18" from my face.... For
old worn out eyes that works

Wow. Your ranch in my head just got a whole lot smaller...

Oh well, still good to know it's a properly shiny PC, hope you're
planning to test it out with plenty of DM.

And BTW, I can't get that server for a deathmatch bash for another 2
months or so, because the guy I know that runs it is on holidays
somewhere in Africa....

If you ask me (which you admittedly didn't) then I would say the pads
are rather skimpy to be honest.

I may invest in some of those mouse skatez. Although I do recall someone
saying something about scotch tape or something being just as good but
?3 for a roll which will last forever.

Meh. My £1 mouse mat is great for it actually, puts up just the right
amount of resistance. Tried Icemats and funcmats and I always go back
to it.

I have a Funcsurface and I like it a lot. But it would be good to find
out what this secret mouse skate is.

Teflon. Our taoiseach is apparently covered in it.

So, you won't be needing that flashy gaming rig, then?......

Damn, that's bad news, really, Jack - sorry to hear it. Is that going
to preclude *all* gaming, or just owning on Rats maps? Maybe the guided
missiles will just be a little less guided?

Yer just gonna have to practise shouting instructions while Lady Fodder
operates the mouse and keyboard.

Actually, that sounds quite a fearsome combination ;)

LOL 8D, HL2 won't come out at this year, maybe 2005 we can expect VALVe to
relase it.
They need to code VAC and CD-KEY system whole new, and because VAC and Steam
are implanted to system it means that they have code big parts of whole game
again. and who can we thank about this gift? because we can't throw that
Anon-gye to jail we can all-ways point our finger to Micro$oft who don't
update their security fast enought, (once in a two months is just too slow,
linux updates it self in hours.)

Im now thinking of what I need to

Your card will be fine, I tried HL2 anon beta on my GeForce2 GTS (overcloked
to GF2PRO) and it worked ok, I can run HL2 at 40FPS in 800*600*32 mode.

You don't need to upgrade your Geforce4 will be fine. (even thought if it is
MX model then you should have already bought new display card)
If you want more more power at very cheap price then you should buy ATi, but
make your self clear that you can't play DooM III at propertly on it and you
have many problems with other games on it and your card drivers are like one
pice of sh.t. But if you buy nVidia card, it won't be so cheap or technicly
advanced, but you can be sure that your drivers will work and you can play
every game you want to play without problems.

And yes, far cry is britty good game to test that. you can't run it at full
settings, but if can run it at high or medium you're just fine.
