Not to Half-Life, I played it years ago, but I want to play
Counter-Strike and Day Of Defeat and all that stuff, so I've ordered a
copy of Half-Life. What I'd like to know is: should I use Steam for
all my online-gaming needs? I'm on a 56K modem, will I be able to
download the MODs from there, or would I be better downloading them
normally over the Web?

Running through Steam - Steam is the only option for download patches
Not that I'll recommend it on a 56K modem - might be a bit expensive

If you decide to go presteam that'll be the case
It's a catch twnty-two actually as more and more servers goes to Steam and
eventually Steam is the only option for playing HL

I pay a fixed amount each quarter for Internet access, so using Steam
shouldn't be any more or less expensive.

I think I will use Steam, and just leave it on one night downloading
updates.

I'd definitely stick with DOD over WON servers for now. Still about 40% of
all DOD servers are using WON. You won't have the problem of the Steam
servers updating your game when you connect to them.
You could get many, many months of HL gaming still with WON and then cross
the Steam bridge when it becomes absolutely necessary.

You'd be better using steam. While steam is a bit sh.t on a modem
because you have to be connected to play multiplayer (I dunno,
possibly even single player, not to sure on that point though),
including LAN games. This could get very expensive if you play LAN
games.
CS1.5 is generally a lot better for modemers, but it's a 200 and
something meg download, and there's no imcremental patch for steam,
which means that when CS1.5 stops working, you'll have to upgrade to
steam anyway, which is 340mb (or thereabouts) so my recommendation
would just be to get steam unless you have a friend with the older
CS1.5 and pre-steam Half-Life patches on CD.
340mb on a modem is damn slow, if you know someone with steam already,
you can copy their cache file and you'll only need the installer,
which is a much smaller 2 mb.

You could buy something like PC Zone for Mods and updates. It's online
section has been getting better over the last few months.
