The Vortigaunt harvester in a cave at the Vortigant Camp ask you to "throw
the bug bait up into ?????." (I can't make out what he's saying)

There were some pretty tough puzzles etc in this game up until this point,
but they were all simple enough, given time. On this ocassion, there is no
point, because I can't understand what this dude wants me to do with the Bug
bait.

I didn't have any trouble hearing this bit. There are only two things the
Vortigaunt tells you to throw bug bait at - the sandpit with a couple of
empty bottles in it, which summons the antlions, and then the
Combine-soldier target dummy, which demonstrates sending the antlions to
attack. After that, you're told to squeeze the pheropod in order to get them
to follow you.

Nice work Mark. That's it. I though he was saying the 'roof' or the
'lights.'
This really is an amazing game - I thought Deus Ex was good until now.

First of all you have to throw it (anywhere) and then to squeeze it,
just to get you to figure out how it works - just like the gravity
gun. Then the gate opens, letting you continue the game.

Throwing it gets the Antlions to go where it's thrown, and squeezing
it gets the Antlions to follow you - this is a really usefull weapon
as you effectively use the Antlions as cannon fodder.
