I installed Half Life 2 a couple of weks ago, and for the past few days,
instead of the normal systray Steam icon, I've got a different one which,
when I hover the mouse over it, says 'Steam - updating - 32% complete', but
is otherwise totally unresponsive. Sometimes it's been 30%, sometimes 37%
(and not in that order). What's it updating, and why is it taking so long?

It's updating the game.  Let me guess.  You are on dialup, right?  That
would explain why it's slow.  Valve keeps coming out with more updates
almost daily.  That would explain why the percentage goes down the next day.
If all you want to play is HL2, you can save bandwidth by having other games
in the monitor screen not update.  It's an option.

I think it's worse than that. I'm on broadband, so it shouldn't be slow, and
I can't launch the game or access Steam at all now - all I've got is the
'updating' icon that never seems to progress, and doesn't respond to any
mouseclicks.

I did have trouble with NTLWorld over the last couple of days - they were
doing maintenance, and internet access was cutting in and out on something
like a minute-by-minute basis. I'm wondering if it's corrupted something in
Steam - I'll probably try and reinstall it. Is it safe or possible to
uninstall and reinstall Steam without touching my HL2 installation?

Problem solved - disabling Steam from starting up automatically, then
launching it manually once Windows was loaded let it finish updating
properly, and it seems to be behaving itself now.

Another tale of woe...
I am on a dial-up... and this constant updating is a curse!
I am fed up with "HL2 is not ready to start" & "server unavailable, please
try later", when all I want to do is get on with the game... D'oh!!!
I want to choose when I up-date... it takes me over an hours to get steam to
finish what it is doing... and then allow me to play... I have disconnected
steam from my internet connection now so I can just get on and play.

Brillant game, but who thought of this grud updating scheme... not everyone
has broadband... and evan those that do are having problems with this
intrusive method of validation and up-dates.  Not only but also,  after the
HL2 install (3 hours) Steam did not let me play my original  HL (circa
1998), I have had to re-install it... this has turned into a real
night-mare!!!  If was not the fact that HL2 is absolutely the best game
ever... I would remove the whole lot from my PC

One suggestion you might try is delete the clientregistry.blob file in
the steam directory.

You should use offline mode then.  If all I had was dialup that's what I
would do.  As a matter of fact, I have a saved copy of the offline blob file
in case my cable connection is not working.
