Who do these morons of Sierra think they are?
Why the hell must I register on line when I want to play off line?
Why the hell can't I just play off line with my legally purchased copy of
the game!!!
Man this sucks... these f*ck*rs are even worse then the thieves in Redmont!!

You can.  If you calm down and take a constructive attitude, someone might
even tell you how.

You have to authenticate the first time you start the game.  After that,
just start the game with your internet connection disabled or turned off.
When Steam starts, it will report that it can't find an internet connection,
and ask if you want to run in offline mode.  Just say yes.  That's it.  :)

You call that a proper workaround.

The first poster is correct.  We fork over the full price, and we have to
have wait 5 to 10 minutes for the program to just get to the main menu.

Turn off my internet connection, what are we doing playing Doom I, that is
an ancient suggestion.

What I want to do know is why I buy Doom III the first week its out and can
play it straight through without a hiccup, yet I get this piece of &%&$ and
fubars trying to load saved games, takes an hour to startup the first time,
etc...

At least Activision and ID Software can do something right.  Sierra needs to
grow up and test their products.

You must have a slow computer.  It only takes me 20-30 seconds.

If you don't want to connect to Steam, that's what you have to do.  But
what's the difference?  If you happen to be connected, then the game
connects to Steam - so what?

I have a fast computer (>3.0GHz, lots of memory and fast SATA disks) and it
takes more then 2 minutes to start up the game and load the last saved game.

The good job they did was on the graphics and AI. Superbly done and the best
there is on the market today.
There are a lot of surprising events in the game and there's some humour as
well (have you seen the Windows BSOD in the lab :-)

However because of the ridiculous loading times, the absurd usage of steam,
the intrusive on line registration process, the major error in the
installation procedure, the overall rating for the game on a scale from 1-5
(1 = the worst and 5 = the best) is something between 0 and 1.

Have the same symptom....

Athlon64 3000
1 Giga Ram
ATI 9600 256 Mb
SATA drive

On would _think_ this to be fast enough... Apparently is not as CPU is
hitting 100% when I start the game... And is completely unplayable for the
laggin&stutterin :-(

Then something is wrong.  It takes me literally 20-30 seconds to load a
level.  A bit long while you're sitting there, to be sure, but nothing like
5-10 minutes.  Were you exaggerating?

If you say so.  I found the Steam experience to be seamless, and in fact I
like it, because it easily allows me to play at home and at work.  :)  My
rating:  5+

No, actually I used a chronometer to measure the time.
And it really took a little more than 2 minutes!

Which creates an average of 2.5... :-)
