I recently purchased Half-Life 2, Episodes 1 and 2, but can't run them
on my HP Pavilion Notebook PC. I can get the get the opening screen to
load up, but when I start the game, the screen goes funny, and then
everything crashes.
It warns me at the start that the video driver needs updating so I'm
assuming that's the problem. Unfortunately, I can't find a video
driver under which the game will work. I'm using a ATI Mobility Radeon
Xpress 200. I tried the ATI web site at http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
, but there's no exact match there (I did try a general Catalyst
driver there). I also tried downloading the Omega driver at
http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati_winxp.php , as well as the 2006
release at the HP web site, at
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?lc=en&cc=us&soft
wareitem=ob-38902-1
. None work.
When the progam crashes it says "Internal driver error in IDirect3D
Device 9:: Present()". Googling this error message led me to try
reinstalling the latest version of DirectX, but that doesn't help.
I've also turned off all firewalls and antivirus software, and that
doesn't help either.
Does anyone have any suggestions for other places to look for a video
card driver, or other fixes to try? It's a little frustrating to pay
$30 for a game and not be able to play it.

Why not install the game onto a desktop computer, one that has
a game-friendly video card. Maybe there's one available in the Physics
Lab...
if the GMan says its okay.
Say, you're not studying Anomalous Materials are you?
Any Black Mesa Research Facilities nearby?

Laptop graphics suck. Get yourself a desktop rig. I play HL2 on a PC with
a modest video card -- an Asus 256mb 128bit PCI Express Nvidia 7300GT card
that I bought for $40. I recently built my brand new desktop rig for $300
total. Asus silver/black case, Asus m2m Deluxe mobo (with PCI-E), AMD
Athlon dual core 4000+ CPU, 2 gigs of RAM, 250 gig HD, Asus DVD burner, and
the 7300GT card, etc. -- all for $300 in parts from newegg.com. It'll
f____g smoke my sister's precious $1300 Macbook. Desktops are just way
cheaper and more powerful than laptops. In 6 months or so, I'll buy an
8800 series Nvidia card for about $100 or whatever they will cost by then.
