Hi, HL2 worked fine for me for months, but now it, er, doesn't. I don't
know if any of the below could explain it:
I downloaded the Lost Coast level, which quickly crashed. (I also tried to
resurrect ye olde Grim Fandango by installing DirectX6, but that was no
good, so I reinstalled DX9. Other new games seem to work okay, so DX9 seems
to be installed all right.)
After all this, HL2 froze, so I reinstalled it via Steam. First try at new
game: Briefcase Man's introductory speech works, but then it locks when it's
making the transition to game proper in the train. Ever after: it locks
when loading new game, with about two-thirds of progress bar complete.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks

Unloading Adwatch has done the trick - but I've lost my game saves on
reinstall. Where can I get some saves at least for the start of each level?
Thanks!

Adwatch unloaded - still bloody freezes on game load.
I give up.

have you run disk tools to check for hard drive errors? If you have not, run
it and set it to repair automatically.

Seriously man, if you post your problem to alt.games.half-life, there's
bunches of people that have been through just about everything related
to HL1 & 2. In regard to your question though, have you had steam
"verify game files"? Also, if you post your hardware specs, it can help
others figure out what might be wrong.
Best of luck.

Hi thanks for that - I've posted to alt.games.half-life, and I've listed
everything I can think of!
Cheers

The program seems to get confused if it can't snif with the rest of the
world. For the sake of testing, try setting Zonealarm to STOP all
internet activity. Then start steam, then start the game (hopefully you
should be able to start in offline mode). See if that works.
