How do I change to no-weapon-selected so that I can pick up items like cans,
etc.

Just press "E" to pick something up.  You should be able to pick some
stuff up while the crowbar is in your hand.

Haven't you reconfigure your keyboard ?

Cause hiting the 'key' set to use allows you to pick objects, whatever the
weapon you are holding...

He shouldn't need to reconfigure his keyboard. Pressing 'E' no only
picks up objects but also opens doors, activates switches and interacts
with people. If he can't pick up objects because 'E' is not bound
anymore, he would be reporting these other issues as well.

Are you Tony?

No,  It turns out I was trying to pick up stuff that wasn't pickup-able.  At
least not without the gravity gun.

I was just in that room with the teeter-totter thing, and all the
walk-throughs talked about placing bricks on it to tilt it up.  I found
nothing in the room I could pick up, so I tilted it with my own weight and
ran and jumped across instead.

Thanks much for the replies though,
Tony

Nut.. There's bricks strewn over the floor, and it's impossible to get out
of the room without them, 'cept with noclip, of course..
