Dave - 04 Feb 2005 16:27 GMT I really enjoyed the game, but wish they had included more of Dog. He was a blast.

V01TeK - 05 Feb 2005 07:02 GMT I would have to say that the increased focus on story was unnecessary. HL didn't need a story, and it was exciting enough. I love a good plotline when it's necessary, but it just felt like it was slowing down the game in HL2.

I didn't notice :-) But what comes to the game, in the beginning it was dynamite, but became boring and boring all the time and Super Boring after the spot I was forced to use the gravity gun only. Blahh.
V01TeK - 07 Feb 2005 04:41 GMT > HL2 has got a story? I didn't notice :-) > But what comes to the game, in the beginning it > was dynamite, Yeah, that's my other gripe: most of the bits that really made me go, "Cool!" were in the first half of the game.

Robert Moir - 05 Feb 2005 12:38 GMT > I really enjoyed the game, but wish they had included more of Dog. He > was a blast. Any disappointements? Well the game was far shorter and not half as good as one would expect it to be Steam sux The game is bugged - with all the years and excuses I can't believe it was released with that stutter problem. Oh yes, linear pathways. At least Doom3 was honest about the fact you were walking around a rigid maze.
I expected far more, TBH.
binarycode@onetel.net.uk - 05 Feb 2005 14:02 GMT I've only played three levels but I agree about the audio and video stutter. Does seem wrong to release a game that routinely jerks, the sound breaks up, and the frame rate slows down (and I am convinced it's not my pc at fault - so there!!). But aside from that, I have liked what I have played so far. Graphics are fantastic. Perhaps Valve can release a deluxe version which plays smoother - be it with reduced polygon detail to remove the slow frame rate and uneven left right movement, or a version which is identical to the current one in detail but with the bugs removed.
I think Half Life 2 - the deluxe version, available as a large Steam download would solve all the problems. :) Perhaps Valve is working on it.
binarycode@onetel.net.uk - 05 Feb 2005 18:37 GMT Just like to add, it's the most realistic game environment I have ever played. I do feel I am part of a real Half Life 2 world which I guess is what Valve set out to achieve.

Graphics aside - its somewhat dated now and never was that good a looker in its prime - I found Operation Flashpoint to have a considerably more "real" environment.
Peter Webb - 05 Feb 2005 14:14 GMT > Oh yes, linear pathways. At least Doom3 was honest about the fact you were > walking around a rigid maze. Except in levels like Anthills, where you are on a narrow stretch of sand etc, I never got the feeling of being more than 10 feet from the path that everyone must have followed. In Doom, you had an environment where you did rooms and areas where you actually had lots more freedom of choice.

OT I know, but I liked the part of Doom3 where if you went to martianbuddy.com, you got the code for the cabinet.
Showed a little out of the box thinking.
However, IMNSHO, HL2 pisses all over Doom3 on all levels; gameplay, graphics, storyline and so on.
Doom3 just seemed to go for the "monsters jump out at you when you least expect it" sort of cheap thrill, whereas I did get into HL2 more, although having said that, towards the end there could have been more variation in the type of combine to sort out.

>Well the game was far shorter and not half as good as one would expect it to >be Easy to fix: expect less and play slower :) I'd agree, though - it's a fun game, but not earth-shatteringly good.
>Steam sux Agreed. It just adds another thing to go wrong.
>Oh yes, linear pathways. At least Doom3 was honest about the fact you were >walking around a rigid maze. This really bothered me, and it detracted from the feeling of immersion. Most of the levels felt far too planned to be real. The best game in this area I've seen is Far Cry, and I was hoping that HL2 would expand on freedom and enemy AI rather than reverting to keeping the player on the path. It's a good path, but it's too clearly a path.
I also wished there were more logic puzzles (as opposed to physics puzzles), where a player could observe things and later use that knowledge to get past obstacles. -- Mark Rafn dagon@dagon.net <http://www.dagon.net/>
