HL2 on LCD monitors?

I'm thinking of getting a fast LCD to replace my dying CRT.  How does
HL2 (or other new games) look on an LCD at non-native resolutions?
For example, if I have a 17" 1280x1024 but run the game at 1024x768 or
800x600.

Thanks!

Looks great. My 17" is 1280 x 1024 and I run both HL2 and DOOM3 at 1024 x
768.

The "non-native" resolution thing is an issue for normal computer functions,
where you have static displays and lots of fine lines. Its not an issue in
3D style shooter, where display elements are not designed to be a single
pixel wide, and things are often moving. Think about how a TV that looks
excellent for movies - crisp and clear - looks terrible when used as a
computer monitor (and yes I know some of that is caused by interlacing, but
not all). An LCD is a bit like that. Used at non-standard resolutions, it
looks OK but not great at displaying text, but for moving pictures it looks
brilliant whether using a native res or not.

A potentially bigger issue is lag in refreshing pixels, which can cause
trails behind objects and blurring. My monitor is 12 months old, and doesn't
have this problem at all, and I suspect that pretty much all current LCD
monitors are fine - it was really only an issue for early LCDs.
