I've read that Plextor drives are extra picky about the protection.

I'm running the collectors edition on DVD in a Plextor PX-716A with no
problems at all.

You are trying to run a pirated copy of hl2.

I don't see how.  I don't think Steam will let him get that far.  First
thing that happens is steam checks to make sure you have registered HL2.  If
not you don't even get the option to play in "My Games".  HL2 would be
listed in the "Just Released" section.

So this brings up the question of why VU thought it was necessary to check
the cd at all?  Maybe they were worried about people cracking steam.  Any
way,  there is a no-cd crack out on the net for people who have legally
purchased a retail CD or DVD.

You don't need a no-CD hack.  Install the game from disc, then go and set
yourself up on Steam - download the game off there - and you won't have to
use the disc.

I'm not following you.  You said to install the game from cd and then
download it from steam?  But I'll assume you mean download instead of
loading from cd.  Even then, when you punch in your cd key, steam knows
which keys are retail and then prompts for the cd to play.  A friend of mine
tried it that way.  He still has to put in the cd.

It's somewhere on the Steam forums, posted from Valve themselves.  They say
that if you install the game normally from disc, then download from Steam,
you can circumvent the need to put the disc in the drive when you play.  I'm
sorry, I don't know the exact procedure, but you can go to the Steam forums
and take a look at what they say to do.

Well, finally, for all the people with cd/dvd problems there is a no cd
crack for this game.
