I wouldnt be surprised if you dont have ADSL... since it took a whole
morning for me the first time with a 6 Mbps internet connection.
It was like closing to 99% then going back to 75%...
I am afraid waiting is the only option (unless there is yet another problem)

Eric

I do have ADSL. My first PC is a XP2500, 1Gb RAM, 9800Pro. I couldn't get
this to work with Steam. The second PC is an XP220, 256Mb RAM, GeForce4 MX.
Both are connected by a wireless modem/router to the broadband connection.
(I contacted support, but they don't read what you write - they kept saying
it was the firewall, even though I had explained that I'd turned it off and
used the DMZ - *sigh*)
When I gave up on my fast machine, I tried on the slow machine. Which
connected and decoded the game files (from the DVD). When I'd done as much
as I could on it, I copied the whole Steam directory to the fast computer...
That's what took all afternoon!
Then on the fast PC it connected first time, there was no winsock error or
problems with the connection. It seems to work OK now, except HL2 is stuck
on 99% updated. However, I read that the first game has to be online, and
then it goes to 100%, and you can play offline? I *hope* so! Unfortunately,
it always seems to be busy, so I can't get on :-(
