How do I make steam go online?

I got HL 2, registered, gave them my password etc, put in the cd key
numbers and played the game. Turned off machine. Then came back a few
hours later, went online and the steam window reads "operation cannot
be completed when steam in offline mode." So how do I make it go
online? I have looked on all the steam window boxes, pressed this icon
and that and I can't work it out.

If anyone can help I will really appreciate it. I have the game
installed, it worked earlier, I just can't find an icon which reads
'steam online'. Sorry if the answer is staring me in the face, but I
can't access steam online even though my broadband is live.

Seems you lost your internet connection while trying to play the second
time.

HL? always checks your game is not a pir8 one through internet.

Try lauch again when you are sure you are connected.

Yes, thanks for your help I turned off my pc, put it back on, went
back online and then Steam worked.:)
Since then I seem to be able to play it both online and offline.
