...you bought a game, installed it and it worked first time?

I do.

Don't get me wrong, I think HL 2 is pretty amazing but boy, I am still
struggling to get it to work. If HL 2 were a new car you bought and you
were driving along and the steering wheel came off you'd be pretty
upset. Cars have rigourous testing before they can be allowed to be
marketed so why have Valve and Vivendi released this game before they'd
sorted out the problems?

AND I STILL CAN'T GET THE SOUND PATCH TO WORK!!!!!

Guess it's time to email Steam. Oh boy, this should be fun... :)

Let me guess...

... they arleady were ONE YEAR late (since the so called hacking problem of
theirs).

And remember PC universe is a bit peculiar. There are millions of different
configurations, some of them being uncompatible with softwares when they are
released and the soft designers can't be blamed for that. I (want to) belive
beta-testers do their best so that the game is released "almost" finish.
Beta-testers are not more reliable than any other human.

I have had my share of trouble (waiting, updating, stucking, ...) with this
game, however it finally ended working fine after a couple of weeks.

Regarding your sound patch, I don't think Vivendi can do anything about it :
it is the company that manufactured your sound card that has to be
contacted. They provide the "software" interfacing your computer with the
hardware.

Good luck !
