Over the last two weeks, we had rented Vice City for PS2.  Obviously, we
loved it, and purchased it on Friday.  Here's the problem.  We had saved our
progress on our memory, but when we tried to load those saves with our newly
purchased game, it errored out, and wouldn't open.  I should mention that
the memory card is working fine when we retrieve other saves for other
games, and that we are able to save our progress with the new game.  Why
can't we open the old saves?  Are there different versions of VC.  Thanks.
Love this NG.

Hey,

I believe there were different release version of VC released for the
PS2 (but fixes), though I doubt that this is the cause of the memory
card problem. I'd suspect that one of the last saves you did corrupted
some data on the card.
This most frequently happens on those cheap generic copies of PS2
memory cards - very risky. That's why I only use original 'Sony'
memory cards (pricey but bomb-proof).

This is a Sony Memory card.  I'll do some more Googling.  Thanks to all.

From what I've gathered on this subject there are 3 versions. The
original, one w/ a few bugs fixed and the new edited version. Each
have conflict issues w/ the others saves for some odd reason. Time to
start over :-/ Delete the file and create a new one.

There was a thread about this in this NG maybe 2 weeks ago, search on
http://groups.google.com/.
I don't know what is true in that, but, according to what was said
then, they published a revised version of the game, to answer
complaints about "controversial ethnic messages"... And a poster had
the same problem as you have.
I guess there's noting you can do... but start again from the
beginning. Try new ways for the easy early missions and have fun!

Did you save at the Cherry popper's Ice Cream factory? This save point
is notorious for saving a corrupted file onto your memory card.

Cheers

No.  I read somewhere that it will lockup your saves.  As well I read that
saving while on a motorcycle will do the same.

Thanks Rob.

From what I remember the Cherry Poppers glitch was the reason for the
1st revison and the Haitian whiners for the 2nd.

Is this true of the PC version as well?  I haven't had any problems yet, but
I'll avoid that save spot in the future if this is a known issue.

Same thing happened to me and I had completed the game so I've had to start
over with my new disc....which I don't mind.
I knew it wasn't the save file because I could still load it using the old
disc.
Unfortunately I think I have the latest "revised" version of the game now
because when I did the "Trial By Dirt" mission I didn't have 3 "stinkin'
Haitians" following me around any more trying to knock me off. I've tried it
a few times now and still no Haitians. P*sses me off because it was fun to
get the lads to follow you onto the road and jack different vehicles and
chase you around the city trying to ram you. The fun is gone out of that
mission now so I won't be playing it anymore. Boo!! They could have at least
put 3 cubans, cops, gang members, prossies, shoppers, taxi-drivers.etc.
instead of just taking that feature out altogether. Sniff!!!!
