tmac - 25 Jan 2004 15:16 GMT Just finished GTA3 (all the career missions, at least), and I'll probably start playing around with VC today.
One of the GTA3 walkthroughs at Gamefaqs recommended playing all the side missions before starting on the career missions - you can build up a lot of cash and goodies before getting all the various gangs all pissed at you.
Would you recommend a similar strategy in VC?
Thanks,
tmac

However, the second go round you may want to be methodical and build up a great save game of "In the Beginning". I managed to do Pizza Boy, Hidden Packages, Taxi and Ambulance. I had to try Ambulance many times before I got anywhere. I could never get Vigilante in the Rhino or Firetruck to do even the first mission. You need to figure out how to get to the mainland. Poke around on google and you'll find hints. I used the "jumping through the top of the gate at the Cortez Marina" method. I don't see anything stopping you from doing the Rampages. Most of the stunt jumps can be done as well. I think I actually enjoy doing some the side missions as I go along better. Pizza Boy and Taxi are just drudgery to me, so I don't care if I never do them again.
Have fun! Roadie Roger Don't forget to get the "hot sauce" at Tacopolyse.

Most useful are the ambulance missions (gives you unlimited sprinting upon completion) and the fire truck missions (makes you fireproof). Also collect all the hidden items, which unlock new weapons. You could do taxi missions to earn money, but the "prize" for completing 100 of them is simply a more powerful taxi. Bleh.
You might think you can't do the fire truck missions at the beginning, because the only fire truck is on the west island (which is inaccesible until you do a bunch of the career missions). But after you collect 40 hidden packages, you unlock the flame thrower, and when you burn up a car or two, a fire truck comes to put them out, which you can then steal and do the fire truck missions with. :)

You seem confused. In VC, the prize for completing Taxi missions is the jumping taxi. The more powerful taxi (Zebra Cab) comes after doing the missions that come from buying the taxi station. The jumping taxi is far more useful. (And in fact the Zebra Cab can jump too.) In GTA3, you got a more powerful taxi for 100 missions, but you're obviously talking about VC, since the reward for firetruck missions in GTA3 was just a Flamethrower, not being fireproof.

However, there are a few other ways to get a firetruck on the east island. You can do the Molotov Cocktail rampage near the lighthouse area. (It won't always appear. If it doesn't, fail the rampage intentionally and start over.) Or after the Demolition Man mission where you blow up the building under construction, a truck will always show up which is generally left unoccupied, so it's easy to steal.

Yeah, I've only played VC. I don't find the jumping taxi all that useful, sorry. :)

Also, it can be a fun distractin for a while. Try jumping and landing on bikes, pedestrians, etc. Try going up ramps and jumping at the same time. It is possible to jump onto the roof of the police station if you hit jump right coming over the bridge from Starfish Island. Try going up one of the ramps with 2 wheels on the ramp, 2 on the ground, and turn and jump at the same time and you can get some good insane jump bonusses, with good rotation scores. Not useful maybe, but definitely fun.

There's another way into the golf course without losing your weapons. At the back end of the course there's a big building that has a wide grass area all around it. It's a tall building and you turn right off the road and head down the grass, parallel to the water. Right across the water is the golf course. When you get to the end, you take a sharp left and go all the way to the end. If you turn around and floor it, there's a break in the barrier right in front of the water. It's possible to jump over the water and onto the course. Then you just drive over the different bridges to get to the main course. I used this to beat the 4 Iron mission. I know that most of you are probably already aware of this jump but just in case.... Just make sure that you have a fast car when you do it. It's also fun to do if the cops are right on your a.s because most of the time they end up in the drink if they try to jump it.

But if you jump over with a car you can terrorize the golfers, running them over if you are in a particularly bad mood. You also don't have to run away after you kill whoever you're there to kill. You can just drive away, running even more of those pesky golfers over with their little upturned noses and fancy schmancy little golf hats. Bastards!!

Not wrong - the jumping taxi is a great getaway car when trying to get through the smaller streets on the first island.
They're also great fun to try a bit of rail-riding on buildings, bridges and fences
