I haven't downloaded the VC one yet (as I only have the PS2 title), but
the latest GTA3 MTA release didn't give me much hope. I could connect to
a server for roughly 10 seconds, then get a lovely error....of which
there is no fix for, or even a cause known...'cept that it's somehow
related to winsock.

But from my one minute total, it looked pretty fun. I'll bet VC would
have been even better, with the wider roads and better city layout (oh
yes, and aircraft that are actually flyable :).

I'll revisit the project when they hit .7 or .8.

Yet I will say that it's a brilliant idea, and I still wonder why
Rockstar wasn't interested in completing the MP side of the games.

I haven't tried the GTA3 version of it but I have tried the VC version of
it. Frankly I think once you get past the novelty of being able to muck
about in VC with other human players it gets boring very quickly. Firstly,
because it is next to impossible to kill other people due to the
exceptionally bad lag/ syncronisation problems and plus there is nothing
really to do except drive/run around and try in vain to kill the other
players. As far as I could work it doesn't even keep track of everyone's
score. If they improved it to include different game modes such as racing,
gang wars or whatever and fixed the syncro problems and so on it has
potential but in it's current state there is really no point in having it.

it depends on the ingenuity of the other players. sure, you could just stand
there and shoot crap out of each other but to actually use your nut and come
up with ingenious ways of killing people, makes it great fun!

i was stood on top of the malibu club, shooting loads of people when i heard
a chopper.

i turned round to attack it (thinking the person was going to land as i did)
and he flew right into me and killed me in one go!

i do get the occasional one that proves hard to kill but otherwise, it's
fine.

someone organised a beach race. we all started off at the lighthouse and the
first one into the water at the other end won. i was in front the whole race
but was overtaken by two vehicles. both of them span out and i won! hoorah!

another one was organised so i hid by one of the beach shacks with my m60...
took four of them out!

i think it's great fun... can't wait until it gets better!

What I want to know is how they made it multiplayer.  Don't you need to
change the source code?

yup. it entertained me for about two hours. thats because it was
exceptionally fun pissing people off by activating the jetpack and
'god mode' codes. i booked around at ground-level, then would all of
the sudden take off into the sky. there were people on the chat
freaking out about it like "did ya see that?!?! some guy is flying
around!!!" some dunderhead even tried to squash me by landing a copter
on me, but i shot his azz down with an uzi. lmao!!! too funny...
