I'm at the point where I've just opened Vlad's missions, I've checked the
weapons maps and looked for a gun... *any* gun, but no luck.  At what point
in the game do you receive/are able to purchase your first gun?

Thanks in advance

Go to the amusement park, and at the race track, there's a pistol.

Okay, I'm an idiot- I don't know where the amusement park is... and from the
sound of it, a race track is a huge place, could you narrow it down?

The amusement park is where you took Michelle on that first date. You
actually parked her car next to the open gate to the little track, and
the gun is up against the wall of the building to the left when you
walk through the gate, go right to the far corner.

You get your first weapons purchase on the second mission from
Fausten, which come after the Vlad missions.

could you not understand those maps I sent you? the normal pistols are
marked but some are surprisingly well hidden. The deagle is better as
it takes less shots. try finding the machine guns, they're harder
hitting and as a rule easier to collect once you know where they are..

oh yeah, If you look on youtube under "hidden weapons GTA IV" there
are some vids on finding early guns. this is part one

Go to the multistory parking structure across the street from the airport.  On the top level, near one of
the corners, is an MP5 machine gun.  You'll have to keep going back there to reload for a while even
after you get access to the gun shop, because they will only sell you ammo for the crappy Ingram
machine pistol at first.

You can also try your luck with the bikers. Some of them drop pistols or
even uzi style weapons. But I found them very hard to defeat.

I think there is more than one available early in the game but finding
them the first time can be tricky. I now have a reasonable idea of
where and how to get a reasonable amount of ammo while running round
mugging people early on, to get a selection of stuff to work with. One
thing I don't worry about is picking up knives, though sometimes if
they get in close on you with a knife they can mess you up pretty bad
before you can kill them.

My favorite melee weapon by far is the baseball bat.  As long as I keep my distance and watch my
timing, I'm damn near invincible against fists or a knife.  Even three guys aren't a big deal once I got
used to switching targets.  But if I let them get too close, they can punch me and interrupt my swing.
Sometimes they get four or five shots in while I'm trying to hit them once.  That's no fun.  I tend to run
off a few steps and turn on them quickly, which usually works.  I'd like to practice my batting
technique (heh) more often, especially against multiple opponents, but the cops jump in and break it
up more often than not.  Grumble.

yeah, I have been mobbed a few times. I got it on my very first
attempt, when I didn't even have any weapons and hadn't the foggiest
idea of how to fight properly, I accidentally punched a lady I was
running [past and she turned on me, then two guys jumped me from
behind. I hadn't even any armour so I lasted about a minute. I ALWAYS
carry a bat now, but trying to get the thing out of your jacket when
they're slashing at you is not fun.

You know what?  The maps you sent me were great- as great as you could send
me but they were still vague.
I got the baseball bat which was right in the alley by my house, but there
was supposed to be a pistol nearby too.  No luck there.  That's why I was
thinking that I needed to pass a certain level before guns were available...

The nearest pistols are the one by the fairground and the one on the
roof of the theatre/club place. That one is a bit awkward to find and
needs some effort to get to.

You're my hero!!!  I watched the first vid and I got a gun.... Now I'm going
to 'reload' and 'reload' until I've got enough ammo to take on an army, but
I'm not going to murder any prostitutes, not only because that got old 10
minutes into GTAIII, but specifically because that weird Scottish dude is
giving us a bad name...

Actually, I'm not going to 'reload' and 'reload'...  Once I got the pistol,
it didn't re-appear.  GTA IV is going to make me work for each kill.....

It does reappear, it just takes time. Go for one of the other weapons
then go back. There are four or five pistols and a deagle on the
island and all of them carry the same ammo. The same goes for the
smaller machine guns and the bigger machine guns. If you can find just
one or two of the other pistols then you could probably do a little
route collecting one of each.

The quickest way to collect pistols is to get into a shootout with the
cops :O)

BTW, don't let the cops arrest you ever. Let them shoot you or commit
suicide because if you're arrested you lose your weapons but if you
die you don't.

Another easy way to get their guns is to grab a car, then bump into their
cruiser with it (from behind is my fav) and start backing up. When you
trigger a star, Officer Friendly will get out. Then floor it and mulch him.
Rip off his car door as a bonus. And rarely does this trigger a 2'nd star. I
guess the first killin' is free. ;)

Weapons and flying rats are hidden better than in previous GTA's. The
awesome level of detail of the city is partly to blame. Use the nights to
wander around looking for them since they glow red at all times and easier
to spot by chance. A motorcycle is great for this. There are several weapons
around your 1'st apartment.

Best way to find pigeons is to wear headphones.  You'll pick up on their
cooing and zero in on them much more easily that way.  I've found far more
by hearing them than by seeing them.

Out of the maybe 15 i've found by chance so far, only 2 have come from
hearing them. And even then, i was on foot near by. Headphones are a good
idea though Bob, they don't coo very loudly. Tough to hear them over
traffic, gunfire, sirens, and screaming. ;)

Yeah, I should have specified that I was on foot but I hadn't because I
frankly hadn't considered looking any other way.  Cars are too noisy and
take you out of range of their cooing too fast unless you're moving at
walking speed, in which case you might as well walk.  Only being on foot
and looking in every direction really works.  I don't mind, because it
gives me incentive to really explore the city thoroughly and discover all
the neat little touches that the Rockstar guys worked so hard to put in.
The headphones really help not only for hearing them in the first place
but the left and right seperation makes it a lot easier to zero in on
their direction, something I don't really have with my stereo speakers.
I learned the trick from playing Oblivion last fall and looking for
Nirnroots, which I found by the humming sound they made.

This morning I got four more pigeons, bringing my total up to 61.  I know
I'll never find them all without help, but I hope to get as many as
possible before giving up and consulting a guide.  I recall getting 88
packages in GTA3 and 95 in Vice City before resorting to a guide, so you
can see I like taking my time and exploring a lot...

yup, but I would really like to find that sniper rifle. It is marked
as being found on my map but I have scoured the area. there is a weird
building you can climb up with ladders and I have a nasty feeling it
may be on the roof, which you cannot reach.

I found a sniper rifle last night.  It's on one of the two cranes at the docks, right next to where your
ship is at (the one you arrived on when the game started).

wow, that's that mystery solved then. I popped up there on a pretty
early save and there was no rifle. Then I loaded a game which was more
complete and there was a rifle on the second crane (I think) so I
popped up to the other place and sure enough there was a rifle there.
So it appears some of the weapons are not available at the start even
though they are marked. Problem is if they become available only when
the second island is open then I already know where there's another
one over there and they soon become available to buy.

That really stinks.  I did a lot of exploring before the first mission and
now it looks like that's all been invalidated because the pickups simply
hadn't materialized yet.  Crap.

Again, so many posts and I'm so drunk.  I took your advice about YouTube

Nope, takes about four. The other annoying thing is if you
accidentally buy a smaller pistol in the gun shop it will put your
ammo back down, so do be careful when buying ammo. Not that you get
the choice to buy a deagle for quite some time.

...four shots, I don't know if that's worse, or better.  A guaranteed one
