Have you done the races? Cars? Planes/copters?
How about the railroad mission?
The vigilante missions?

Fact is, I've done almost NONE of the missions. Did the first 2 or 3 or 4.
Got bored.

Got a savegame on-line (to open up all areas).  For the last 2 years, I've
been doing my own missions. Race, kill, destroy, fly under all bridges, etc.
A nice, violent outlet.

Sounds like me.  I played about half-way through the game, then quit.  I
got the PC version, downloaded a 100% save online, and spent the last three
years having fun doing my own thing.  I just view the missions as something
to get out of the way so I have access to all the stuff I *really* want to
do!  :)

The odds I'll actually finish GTA4 are pretty low.  But I'll definitely get
my money's worth of enjoyment out of it...

PS:  In case anybody hasn't heard, word is that the release date for GTA4
is 4/29/08.

That is the official release date now. It's actually on Rockstar's GTAIV
website, at the bottom of the page.

Why did they call it GTA 4?

I remember playing GTA 3.
Then came Vice City ... that's 4
Then came San Andreas .... that's 5.

So, unless Rockstar has hired George Lucas (who does not know how to count),
this should be GTA 6.

yes, struck me that way too, specially as they're not the same main
characters.

The rationale, I think, is that VC and SA are really pretty much the same
game (same engine) in new settings with tweaks and minor improvements.
GTA4 is a whole new engine and a whole different game, and Rockstar
considers it to truly be the next iteration, or step in the evolutionary
process.  Even if it takes place in good ol' Liberty City (which
disappoints me a bit.)

That's how someone explained it to me, anyway.

Oh yeah, you can see their thinking, and as GTA3 was so different from
the previous three to them it was a whole new ball game. Well, I
bought a new bloody machine just for this game so it better be worth
it!

I assume Liberty City has grown a tad since last time we drove around
it?

It is an entirely new Liberty City. There are a very few elements from the
GTAIII Liberty City, and they are scattered around quite a bit (the latest
preview shown to various games media people had an updated version of
Salvatore's mansion). The map layout is entirely new, and much larger than
the previous version. Also, virtually no characters from past games are
returning. Go to http://www.gtagaming.com for lots more info :)

I remember seeing an interview with Dan and Sam Houser where they
stated that no past characters would be returning "because they're
dead".

Damn shame I say, I really want to know what Tommy's been up to for the
last twenty years....

Cheers,

The exact quote, which is misquoted so often, is:

"virtually none of the characters from the previous games are returning,
as a lot of them are dead anyway" - Dan Houser

Notice the use of the word "virtually", as opposed to "absolutely". This
means that there will be returning characters, but only a handful at
most (my guess is no more than 3). It does not mean there will be none.

As far as Tommy being one of those, I think it unlikely. He's probably
dead, even though we last saw him alive. Reasoning: when we last saw
Tommy, it was 1986; he and Ken Rosenberg were buddies. When we last saw
Ken Rosenberg, it was 1993, and he was hanging around with Salvatore
Leone. Methinks Tommy is sleeping with the fishes.

Claude might still be alive; his death at the end of GTA2 is theorized
to take place in 2013, meaning he will live another 6 years past GTAIV's
timeline. I'm not saying he'll be in GTAIV, just that he's probably
still alive. I sure wouldn't mind seeing him in GTAIV, though.

CJ's also most likely alive.

Tommy was still alive at the time of GTASA. Have a look at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_ZGQkq4m18 for a reference to Tommy no
longer answering calls from Ken.

Nope.  Tommy was alive as of the beginning of GTA:SA - he just wants
nothing to do with Rosenberg and won't even take his calls. (it's in
"The Introduction", the game-engine movie that came with the soundtrack
and the GTA:SA Special Edition for the PS2)

Considering the violence in the rap scene of the '90s, it's quite
possible that he was dead shot coming outside a nightclub...

While I agree that public acts of gross indecency are wrong, I think that
being shot dead is a rather harsh punishment.

No missions?  Oh, man.  My favorite is what I call "Messing With The
Missions": solve them in unorthodox ways; try stuff in them that you "aren't
supposed to do".  That's the best.

Other than the various side-missions without full cutscenes
(firefighter, paramedic, vigilante, deliveries, girlfriends,
import/export crane in San Fierro, hotel valet, etc.), the only *real*
missions that you might have missed while playing through the game seems
to be the missions at Zero's RC Shop in San Fierro...
