snark - 24 Oct 2007 17:24 GMT Did Rockstar really object to the new Simpsons game? What a bunch of jerks! As a GTA fan, I thought the Simpsons game trailer with the GTS stuff was awesome. Take a chill pill, Take Two!

Apparently there has been some renaming to avoid offending Rockstar/ EA.

This is a certain symptom of the disease of a "professionally managed" software company. They foam at the mouth at the thought of anyone making a dime on their intellectual property or branding. Gee, if I remember correctly Grand Theft Auto:Vice City was chock full of parodies and ripoffs. Oh, those guys were supposed to be "good sports".
Rockstar has much bigger fish to fry. I played GTA:VC to 100% completion a dozen times (OK I had a made a save game to start from). I never got half way though San Andreas. This did have something to do with the fact that my video card had an MTBF of 35 minutes. It would go purple and lock up a minute later. But even more than that SA wasn't fun to play. I would try to get the Stunt Jumps out of the way and fail 25 times in a row on the same jump. This is fun? What is fun about grafitti tags, horseshoes, photos and oysters? It isn't It does make it hard to complete, which is thought to be very desirable. ( I would actually quit the game and study Discete Fourier Transforms, which is actually enjoyable. Without Signals and Systems there is no digital audio or digital video.) They are so worried about be slammed for being easy that they don't worry about being fun. They should make their games fun and stop fuming over parodies.

I have never got to 100% on any GTA games because it doesn't interest me, I like the storyline stuff but when that gets dull so does the game. I put the game down for about a year due to the flying missions and I haven't played since early this year due to one of the later missions that I tried once and could not be bothered to do again. I love GTA but I think they overreached with SA. It's one of the reasons I am not going to get GTA4. I think going back to the same city doesn't provide enough differences to make it worthwhile especially as I would have to get a new console. If they had gone to Europe not only would the game have been more interesting to explore (how many more American stereotypes are left to lampoon?) but it would have made the whole series seem fresh again. I hope I will get the chance to play GTA4 but I certainly won't be buying it before bargain bin time.

i do agree on the tv series though, it's been a bit stale for about 4/5 years now, and seemed to peak at around series 7/8 for me.
there's still the occasional good episode, but the consistency isn't there any more.
anyways, back on topic: bit picky of rockstar getting narky about the use of grand theft scratchy.
they certainly didnt seem to object to them having a "Grand Theft Walrus" arcade cab in the movie :)

GTAIV is going to be a very different game compared to the "3" series, plus there are/going to be more than enough good games to justify the expense of the system.
GTAIV is billed for a March or April release next year, by which time I'm sure the PS3 would have come down in price anyway.
Cheers, Rob

So you want it to be "fresh" without them over-reaching themselves. Tough call - I'd say that there are at least as many people with the opinion that having the same size/style/gameplay, just with different buildings and different accents is not "fresh".
I liked the size of SA and the new abilities (flying, swimming). The horror with which everyone reacted 3½ years ago when it was announced that SA was 90s rap gangsta theme.

I want it to be fresh (who doesn't) so why have they cut off an avenue of adventure by setting it in Liberty City yet again? I am not a big game player, I dont like Halo etc all those games that 'gamers' are supposed to like. I rarely play on my PS2 and I dont see myself using a 360 or a PS3 enough to justify paying anything for one. It's the same reason I don't want a Wii - I just wouldnt use it. I agree swimming was long overdue in SA, the flying was fun when not involved in a mission. I got bored with it a couple of times and I am sure I will pick it up again but I just dont care that much anymore. I want GTA 4 to be great but I just dont think it will be worth it from my point of view. I dont want a GTASA clone set in Europe, I want an interesting game and the words Liberty City really don't help towards that goal

even the trailers show that it will be sod all like previous versions, so i struggle to see why you're so concerned with it being set in liberty city...

There are two things - 1 is the mental thing. It is Liberty City again which gives me no enthusiasm about the game. 2 it will have similar areas, it has to. The main area from GTA 3 (the bit you start in) will be there as will other areas we all know and have got bored of. If they have changed it completely so there is no resemblence from the old LC they are fools to call it that. Basically I won't be getting the game because I think the series has gone stale. Such a shame

the liberty city of gta3, well the layout of it at least, had no relation to the layout of the original liberty city in the first gta.
it's just a name.
if they had called it something else, would you be complaining? the city in GTA4 is supposedly huge, and far bigger than the city in GTA3.
i think you need to reboot your brain, it appears to be stuck ;)

Dynamic Forward - 01 Nov 2007 19:35 GMT > why are they fools to call it that? > [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > > i think you need to reboot your brain, it appears to be stuck ;) GTA has moved on from the original 2d beginnings. I loved those games but the way it looks to me is Rockstar are treating 3 as the first of the 'current' games. The storylines interlink with each other but not with the first two (except Claude Speed) which makes GTA 3 more valid than GTA1 to GTA4. If it is such a different city, if everything is different, if nothing is at all the same why call it the same? Why not come up with another name and make it more Chicago like or some other large American city? If they have used the same city it's a step back, if they have used the same name but a different city it's silly. Either way I won't be getting it. I hope whomever decides to enjoys it but I will not be one of them.

P.S. why have they got rid of flyable planes? I much preferred them to helicopters

If it is such a different city, if everything is different, if nothing > is at all the same why call it the same? Why not come up with another name I think they would be wise to treat 4 as a totally new game with no constraints carried forward from previous games. You see how silly Star Trek and DC and Marvel Comics fans get when they try to maintain story continuity - GTA3 was a new game with a new setting, I say let them do the same with GTA4.
> P.S. why have they got rid of flyable planes? I much preferred them to > helicopters Are they? No planes in GTA4? I haven't heard that, that's a shame if it's true.

More importantly, though, is that the whiners and trigger-happy lawyers like "Whacko Jacko" Thompson would be screaming about how dare they defile the memory of 9/11 by letting impressionable kids fly planes around New York City and, of course, into buildings...

Such a shame I kind of agree that GTA:SA was only an incremental improvement on previous versions, being the third in the GTA3 series. The game is in need of a complete overhaul, and I think that's what it's getting in GTA4. Wait and see. I'm unlikely to get it, however, as I don't want either a PS3 or a 360, but if it comes out on the PC then I'll get it. I should have a dual-core laptop with two graphics cards by then.

Yes, Marge does object to Bart getting "Grand Theft Scratchy". I'll let you know if I get to anything resembling GTA.
On another note I've actually played MetalStorm on the PS3 a lot more. Monument Valley looks awesome at 1080P. Remember all those John Wayne/John Ford westerns running around the desert? ElectraGlide in Blue was also filmed there. After the race you get a replay from many different angles. It's hard to tell that it's even you, but I'm pretty sure it is. Every store ought to have a bunch of these races running the end loop over and over. They are impressive.
Take the inside line at the apex of the turn. The mud usually found there really helps you turn. You get extra traction on the throttle. Knobbies digging in? Wierdly, race track pavement lines work well, including braking upto the corner turn in.
It's easy to get distracted riding the green dirt bike when you fall and realize you've got great looking boobs.

I think the reason that Take Two object is that the game is using the GTA franchise to advertise their own game. The last five 3D GTA games (GTAIII, VC, SA, LCS and VCS) have shipped over 65million copies, and counting.
It's popularity should not be used for free advertising by another company. Any gamer will obviously draw comparisons to GTA if it uses something thats identically named.
The film parody ("Grand Theft Walrus") was funny enough, but I didn't think they'd get away with it for a licensed game.
Cheers, Rob
