Life after San Andreas

SimonH - 12 Oct 2007 11:51 GMT A few days ago I finished the story (did End of the line first time, woohoo. Couple of watch-thrus on YouTube and Fireproof CJ helped). Then I went back and got 100% territory (massive fun, I loved the turf wars) and then it was back to San Fiero to do Cesar's car theft missions (while enjoying the odd cold coffee with Katie to keep the hospital staff sweet about my weapons. I think it might be time for the "Desert Date", though soon; her charms are wearing thin.) and open up the import/export.
Now I'm in an odd kind of place.
I'm on 73% as there is still a fair amount to do. I haven't done any of Zero's missions (the rooftop minigun one pissed me off mightily on the first few attempts) and I've only done a few races. I have all the tags and snapshots but only a couple of horseshoes and oysters. I haven't imported or exported anything yet as I only opened that up last night. The problem is, I'm not feeling that motivated but there are no real alternatives.
I borrowed Liberty City Stories but that just isn't the same. First impressions were good - I loved the incidental music, for example (as I have in all GTAs I've played) but the game looks rushed. The vehicle models are frankly awful when they could have been lifted straight from SA (WTF happened there?) Also, I miss all the stats building and apperance extras. I thought they would be my least favourite part of SA but they really added a lot to the game.
I could start again, but there are bits I don't want to do again.
What did everyone else find after finishing the story?

The zero mission just didn´t work, even with lots of GTA experience and VERY much attempts. I even lost my interest in playing the game itself.
I didnt do the girlfriends "missions" either- I just didnt want to. After finishing the main missions, I lost interest in the sideway missions like driving school and so on. From time to time I do insert the San Andreas Disc, just to start flying over the city, landing somewhere, doing weird stuff. I´m not keen on getting 100%.

More to do, lovely gang wars, a beautiful city. Now I´m waiting for GTA IV to come to germany, just to have a look at it and to decide if I should buy a PS3 or not.

I don't know if it's true of all versions of SA but there's a well known secret that if you have completed the main story and have both girlfriends Barbara and katie on 100% you can then start a brand new game in which you will not lose your weapons or money when you are hospitalised or arrested. To ensure it has worked it's a good idea to grab a couple of bucks and a gun and get killed or busted quickly. If you get hospitalized and lose your gun then katie isn't on 100% and if you lose it when busted Barbara isn't on 100%. It's a nice advantage to take into future games and as long as you have a saved finished game and those two on 100% this will always happen to new games.

Perhaps she wont be going to feed the vultures after all. Isn't Barbara really picky about appearance?

I am not sure, I don't think she is as fussy but she doesn't like bad drivers with being a cop. she is easier to deal with than Katie though, if she wants a drive you just drive around the little place she lives in at a reasonable speed. she isn't the worst for not being home either, and the safe house is in the little town too.

Y'know it's really weird. I went to see her last night but as soon as she said she was married with kids I just had to decline. Talk about art imitating life.

Anssi Saari - 12 Oct 2007 18:05 GMT > What did everyone else find after finishing the story? It's kinda hard to remember three years back, but I think I played SA through the plot but not much more. Then probably did it again and some of the side missions too, but never played to 100% or even close on the PS2. Then it came out on the PC, played it there a lot, even to 100% in fall of 2005.
Now then, about a year and half later, in early 2007 I started playing LCS, so of course it was interesting and fresh, even though it was back to Vice City level of tech... But, it was interesting enough to actually play to 100%.
Recently I've played VCS, but I seem to have trouble getting into it. I guess one reason is that played loads of Vice City before San Andreas came out whereas I never played much GTA3. I finished the plot, but after that haven't had much progress. I think I'm still at less than 50%. Haven't really done much beyond the plot missions other than taking over the empire sites. I suppose the biggest problems in VCS are the silly plot and your loser character.
Gumby - 12 Oct 2007 19:31 GMT > I suppose the biggest problems in > VCS are the silly plot and your loser character. Nah. Vic Vance is fine - 'cept for that subplot with the big-breasted trailer trash (Louise) and having to deal with Lance so much (the latter being VC's only real weakness, along with a couple of small continuity problems [should've left out that stuff about the print shop being where Tommy's father worked (or was it just that he worked with the old man at a different print shop?) and made it a bit more clear at purchase time *why* Tommy wanted it for forging (ie, to rip off Sonny Forelli), as an example]).

In VC he looks much more hispanic, although there's a magazine in Tommy's Ocean View hotel hideout that has a picture of Vic and Lance looking like "proper" brothers.

Cleve - 12 Oct 2007 18:53 GMT > What did everyone else find after finishing the story? I'm one of those guys who went for 100% and finally got it.
I'm an explorer. I slowly (over weeks/months) explored every square inch of SA in the jetpack and made notes about any interesting things I found (which I posted once in this group, a long time ago). Never found anything truly wonderful -- no special pick-ups nor really well-hidden ones, no uncharted off-shore islands, no really cool Easter Eggs. I always wish that the programmers had had a little time to "play" and add some unexpected stuff. I can't shake the notion that there must be some REAL Easter Eggs, somewhere, that nobody can ever find without inside knowledge. (You know: if it's a full moon and you're wearing the joke glasses and holding a vibrator, a hole opens up in a hidden area on the backside of the hills north of Bayside at midnight for 30 seconds that allows you to enter and explore a special area. Or a Yeti in the forested part of Chiliad under similar conditions. Something like that.) It wouldn't take much effort to create some strange treats, using existing capabilities.
Let's see. I perfected my Brown Thunder talents and found that it IS possible to do it endlessly, without starving CJ to death, and that's it's possible to max out CJ's money at a dollar short of a billion in one long run of several hours.
It's fun to do Vigilante missions in a tank, or on a police bike (if you have infinite ammo. from 100%).
Otherwise, I just dick around. Gang wars. Stand-offs with the Law in selected locations. It's fun to hitch up heavy vehicles to a tractor and sling them a few hundred yards (my favorite being a weenie-mobile). It's fun to take a tank to the Quarry, get into 3-star+ trouble, hoist the tank on the crane, and use it to swat Cop Copters out of the air. Stuff like that. There's a place in LS where pedestrians spawn at the top of a utility pole and fall to their deaths while you watch. There are many places where you can enter the Underworld in the jetpack (or even a helicopter) and mess around. There are a couple of places where you can dive into the water and find an "air pocket" that allows you to walk around (or jet pack, if you cheat-create one) anywhere under water (without drowning) as if you were on dry land. Um, let's see. It's possible (but difficult) to knock out an Andromeda (the huge, four-engine airliner) and follow the wreckage as it slowly drifts through the air. (In CJ's home, enter all keys but the last to the Destroy All Vehicles cheat, then step outside. If an Andromeda appears (which it does right away, very often), blow it and immediately enter the jetpack cheat and chase it before it vanishes.) You know. sh.t. That's what I love about GTA games: you're free to try bizarre things that test what they'll let you "get by with".
And of course there's are the Hidden Interiors to explore (which many web sites can tell you about). Actually, I haven't explored that aspect enough.
It's hard to get truly bored if you have any imagination.

In SF, NW of the Airport, S of the train station, near to and just to the north of where the Bullet spawns in that little lot, there is a wall with like a garage that has been boarded over with poorly fitting planks of wood. You can see between the planks into a totally empty room. Have you managed to destroy the planks? I wasn't prepared so I tried ramming with a BF400 (lol, I know) and molotovs but all I got was stars. Grenades might be a better option.
I think I described the location right. I'll have to check later if not.

Some buildings can be entered by coming up from underneath in the Underworld in a jetpack. I don't know if that's one or not.

If you want to be really clever though you don't waste time until the first run through has finished and you have the two girlfriends on 100%, then you restart the game, get as much stuff as you can using one save and always use that as a starter point. When I do this I usually do a slow build up, like I'll do some of it and when I get bored I'll save and then play the game for real, but that saved game is still there and I'll go back and add some more collections. Most of what you get is an asset in playing the game, but it can be a burden to get it all in one go, and those girlfriend attributes can only be gotten after one run through. I am also unsure if you have to actually have the tags mission started properly before you can get all 100% of them.
PS. I have NEVER finished the fire missions since GTAIII!

After "Tagging Up Turf" the game will start to spawn the spray can in CJ's bedroom, but after about ten tags you'll need another can so taking the time to do it in the mission ultimately *saves* you time.
Be especially careful with a one star wanted level, as often cops come out of nowhere and it only takes one hit from a truncheon to knock CJ on his arse and get arrested.
I recommend doing 25 - 50 at a time.

I've got a savegame with all tags done except the tag on the Grove Street bridge (the one the Ballas attack from on OG Loc's party) and the ones from the tagging mission. It's how I start every SA run-through. I can't abide doing the tags...

I'm pretty sure if it's a mission parameter to have infinite spray it will either (a): not allow you to swap the can for the camera, or, (b): still give you infinite spray when you change back.

Having the hidden packages as poppable red balloons was a nice touch, and the extra facility on the map which lists marks completed balloons, rampages and unique jumps should have been implemented MUCH sooner. I mean, fifth game in the 3D series? It would have been handy in SA for tags and photos and things.....

The M4 is probably your best bet for this mission, as the Colt Python (One shot kill!) seems to hesitate firing when Vic is taking damage (I noticed this in LCS too, so I imagine it's the game engine at fault).

Be careful when doing the latter side-mission - the game cheats, and takes any damage inflicted on your water bucket as damage to the chopper!

And is it just me or has he lost the ability to deal with people up close while holding a weapon. sh.t, he was even getting his a.s kicked by an old dear on the golf course last night while carrying a shotgun! Rob White - 12 Nov 2007 22:49 GMT > Oh, I didn't know about the fire one, where abouts is it parked? It's unlocked at a certain point, and you can find it behind the Fire Station in Downtown (Western Island). I can't remember exactly when it becomes available, but a good bet would be the mission "From Zero To Here" which unlocks the eastern island (And subsequently helicopters).
> damn, thanks for that though, something else to keep me occupied. I should have said in the last post - VCS seems to have more side-missions than the actual storyline!
<Shameless Plug(tm)> If you're playing the PS2 version, there's extra/altered content - a few new side missions, 6 extra unique jumps, 5 extra Rampages and one rampage that's changed location (the Brady games website has a list of the altered content).
My guide is one Gamefaqs.com should you need it....
Cheers, Rob

The good thing about GameFAQs is you can click the author's name to bring up what files they've submitted.
By the way, GTA:VC plot guide V1.00 is 99% complete!

phexitol - 13 Nov 2007 06:10 GMT >> My biggest dislike so far was the mission where you eventually end up >> behind the big hotel surrounded by gun toting women. That mission >> sucks and despite an impressive arsenal it took me ages to get through >> it. Ditto, except that I've never finished it, since you then have to do a horrible chase, and I quickly lost all will to bother anymore. I haven't played in months. What's funny is that "Tune In, Turn On, Bug Out", which everyone bitched about being hard, was slightly tedious, yet fun and easy overall for me.

Actually, if you run for the gate immediately after the cut scene, you can just leave that way. The gate doesn't close right away, but it will close if you waste too much time.
I totally hate "Unfriendly Competition". If I were to name this mission, it would be named "sh.t Pie".

Ah, well, you could do what I did eventually and use the armour cheat
:O)) I was okay at the chase bit though, in comparison to the rest I finished it in one go

Some of the girls also try to shoot you through a wall when you're there, kind of makes it easier.

Gumby - 11 Nov 2007 00:11 GMT >> really? see, you do learn something new every day! :O) > > Indeed. After "Tagging Up Turf" the game will start to spawn the spray > can in CJ's bedroom, but after about ten tags you'll need another can > so taking the time to do it in the mission ultimately *saves* you time. Eh. A can spawns on the roof behind CJ's place. [go into the alley between his and Ryder's, climb up on the wall on CJ's side, then up to the roof - same path you'd take if you went for the Tec-9 on Sweet's roof] No need try and do so much at once. :)

Thankfully I'll never have to do spray tags again, one of the benefits of strategic saves. My save also skips the incredibly tedious tutorial missions.
Cheers, Rob
