What's the deal with this mission?  I thought it was supposed to be a 'no
stars' mission?  I began the mission, then left Smoke in the car, went to
the airport, got in a plane, but the minute I entered San Fierro, I had a 4
star wanted level!!!  I made it to a pay n spray, got back in the car with
Smoke, went downtown, then I was stuck on the back of the bike shooting
ruskies... where's the 'no stars' part of this 'no stars' mission????

TIA!!!

Maybe the high wanted level mechanism for entering locked cities overrides the no-stars
aspect of the mission.

Yeah, that's what's so confusing- Everything I've heard about this glitch
was that you were able to enter all the cities, and the only time you'd be
shot at is if you entered the Las Venturas Area 69...  ???

Wrong mission. You want "Reuniting the Families". Notice that the
military base and aircraft carrier will still fire missles at you if you
get too close.

Hi. You need to play part way through this mission to get to the no-stars
part. Drive Smoke to the marker, and after the short cut-scene, clear out
the Russians inside the building. Once you and Smoke get outside for the
second shooting section, you are free to leave him and do whatever you want
without getting stars.

No pedestrians or vehicles spawn on the roads, so you will have to get to
where a parked vehicle spawns. You need to get away from the shoot-out
quickly as well, as Smoke continues to take damage while you are close by,
and it is possible for him to be killed, which fails the mission and you
lose the no-stars protection.

I suppose it is possible to return and complete the mission, however
whenever I have tried this, Smoke starts to lose health again and dies as
soon as I get fairly close.

When I started trying this one I found that, yes, you can go no stars
directly after you have left the building, of course leaving some of
the bad guys to pin down smoke. Indeed from there it becomes a no star
mission, but the bad news is if you get back to smoke and get on the
bike when it enters the cut scene the game locks during the bit where
your bike is supposed to leave the car park. The only way to use it as
a no stars is to get killed or let smoke get killed before the cut
scene. As there are a few other no stars it hardly seemed worth it in
the end.

Are you sure? That's happened to me at least twice with regular gameplay
(the cutscene camera jibs down the spiral ramp to ground level, but then
nothing happens).

I've had several cutscene lockups like this, the most frequent is the start-
or end-of-mission cutscenes at "The Four Dragons"

yep, that's the very place

I tried it a few times, back when we were all trying to find the first
no stars mission and it locked every time at the same place, if you
let it go into that cut scene after returning from your journey over
to the other islands etc. A few of you could volunteer to try it again
and prove/disprove my theory :O)

I've got a save for every mission, so I'll give it a go later on. As I said
earlier, I never managed to get back before Smoke got killed in previous
efforts, so it might take a few goes.

I think this is one of tose don't dally situations. rather like when
you leave, if you mess around too close to the area smoke takes hits.

I have now played through this mission several times, and have been able to
return and complete the mission without any problem in the cut scene, or
anywhere else, so it must be something specific to the ps2 version.

I did make one unexpected discovery, which was repeatable. As in my previous
attempts at this Smoke had got killed, I decided to help him out a bit and
killed all but 1 of the Russians before leaving him. I ran off down the ramp
and was about half way across the square outside the police station when the
cut scene started and I appeared on the back of the bike. I assume Smoke
managed to kill the last Russian to trigger it. The cut scene played through
ok, and I was able to complete the mission. I was able to get this to happen
again, running off in the other direction. I have no idea how far away you
have to get to avoid this.

Finally for this mission, near the end when Smoke tells you to shoot the
gates I decided to see what would happen if you didn't. The bike breaks them
anyway and the mission continues just as if you had shot them out. (I was
rather hoping it would crash and throw us off, and there would be an
opportunity to finish the fight on foot)

I'll have to have a go on the xbox, when I can get myself to do it as
I think I'm either further forward of further back than the mission on
all my saves.

Heh, I had tried that too, only the time i did it deliberately I
hadn't noticed how little life I had left and it DID explode :O) Next
time i just forgot while I was trying my best to think of a way to
stop it leaving me with an empty gun when I had already collected tons
of stuff.

I get that too, but only at the beginning of Fender Ketchup. It freezes
after the speaking, before the car drives out of the garage into the yard. I
have the PC version, and the spacebar always clears it.

maybe the space bar would work in this case. Thing is I have two
versions, xbox and ps2, the ps2 being the oldest version. I am not
sure if I ever tried it on the xbox... sounds like I just gave myself
a chore!

Not to mention a lot earlier: "Drive Thru" probably being the best.
Just don't get into Sweet's car at the start.  And, unlike "Just
Business", you don't have to fail the mission when you get back and
everything spawns as normal.  [of course, it's too late for Buckaroo,
but he'll know for next time :]

Yes, that was the one. I think we got confused a bit back then. I
personally thought he meant the one where he learns to shoot. It is
the best and easiest, and of course earliest time to do it.

I thought it was "Drive By". (The one where you have to go and kill Ballas
near Glen Park, and are given a wanted level at the end so the game can
teach you how to use the Pay'n'Spray)

Don't think it's a no-stars, just an automatic 2-star after killing the
Ballas, if you don't already have it.  "Drive Thru", on the other hand,
is *DEFINITELY* a no-stars at the beginning.

it's the damned names, and I haven't been playing it recently. Worse
as they both start the same way.

I have just tried both these missions, and am unable to get no-stars in
Drive Thru. Running down a cop got me 2 stars in Los Santos, and crossing
into the locked territory got me 4 stars.

On the other hand, Drive By is definitely no-stars. There are vehicles on
the road but no pedestrians, and going into the locked islands doesn't get
stars.

Of note in Drive-by is that after the Ballas are killed and you get the
automatic 2 stars, driving through the star on the other side of Glen Park
reduces the wanted level to 1 (but the cops still chase as if it was 2), and
driving through a second star puts the wanted level back up to 2.

Strange.  If you leave at the start of the Drive Thru, without getting
into Sweet's car, it's always been a no-stars for me in both the PS2 and
PC version.  Even the naval base and Area 69 don't trigger a wanted
level, both in the air and on the land.  Pedestrians and vehicles all
spawn as normal, too.

Oh, bloody Hell.  Where the *BLEEP* has my head been yesterday?  It *is*
Drive By.  Maybe it's the lack of coffee - ran out Saturday morning and
won't have any more 'til tomorrow, a horrible situation for any 7-a-day
person. :P

Yeah, when I searched for the 'no stars' missions, I cursed myself cuz I'd
already finished that mission!!!

Much love to the guy who alerted me to deserting the traitor Big Smoke!!!
With a device made of 13 cents and two rubber bands, I was able to get FULL
PILOT SKILL  while still in Los Santos!!!!

Thanks again
