GTAIV trailer coming 3/29
first glimpse of the series' next chapter in four weeks.

By Tor Thorsen, GameSpot
Posted Mar 1, 2007 3:59 pm PT

This afternoon, Rockstar sent out an e-mail blast centering on a
black, monolithic Roman numeral "IV." It announced that the first
trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV will unspool in exactly four weeks on
March 29. Since all GTA games from Grand Theft Auto III on have used
the in-game engine for cinematics, it is likely that the trailer will
contain the first glimpse of the game in action. GTAIV will use the
RAGE (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine) previously seen in Rockstar Games
presents Table Tennis.

Also today, the official GTA IV Web site launched, sporting a
countdown clock that will end at 3 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time. That
is, if it accounts for the early implementation of daylight-saving
time on March 11; if not, it will end at 2 p.m. PDT.

As announced at the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Grand Theft
Auto IV will be released domestically for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation
3 on October 16. Europe will get the game three days later. It will
presumably have an M rating and $59.99 price point.

I am very much looking forward to this.

Now cue lot's of tiresome folk all going on about how they can't see
what's so good about GTA.

I'm hoping that GTAIV will finally put these people in their place.

The RAGE that Rockstar used for Table Tennis was nothing short of
amazing. If you look closely you can see it even plots individual hairs
on the player's heads! I'm trying to imagine what a free-roaming 3d
game will look like using this.

Hell, I can't even wait for the trailer let alone the game!

Cheers,
Rob

It would have to be pretty sparsely populated...as in you and one bad
guy. I'd imagine all the cloth dynamics would be turned off for the
most part as well.

I'm fingers crossed that Jesper is one of the villains though. He
definitely needs a baseball bat to the head.

Absolutely. Remember in Table Tennis they only had two characters and a
very closed environment to worry about. No way that GTA IV will look
even remotely like table tennis. I'd be happy with Saints Row with a
smoother framerate!

well, i expect theyre aiming a bit higher than saints rown, which
looked distinctly last-gen at times.

besides, it was a totally different dev team that did table tennis
too, people forget that Rockstar isn't just one team :)

I can't see what's so good about GTA. I mean, sure, it gives you total
roaming freedom. And lots of in-game humor. Interesting story lines.
Great vehicles to play with. The best in-game radio ever. Countless
missions and side-missions. Many hours of replay-value. But other than
that, what has GTA ever done for us?

(Monty Python fans may recall a similar sketch here :)

If you want a good laugh, check out the website "Game Pilgrimage".
There's a whole section about how GTA sucks, and how the media
conspired to brainwash everybody into thinking it was a good game.
I've never seen such a bad persecution complex in the video game
website world.  The webmaster seems to associate GTA with the "forces"
that killed the Dreamcast (he's the world's hugest Sega fanboy), as
well as the death of "old school gaming".  I find that funny, because
I get the impression that the GTA series has its conceptual roots in
the days of 8-bit computing; if anything, games like Resident Evil and
Rebel Assault did more damage to old-school gaming without providing
anything in return.

They may have lost me, this time -- unless they knock a few hundred $ off
the price of the PS3s.

And I'm upset that they have two versions.

And I'm upset that the lower-priced unit does not accommodate memory cards.

I may join you PCers this time (if my PC meets the system requirements).  If
it doesn't -- well, I'm not moving heaven and earth to play, this time.  I
can entertain myself quite well, for some time, with the GTAs I already own.

I bought my PS2 for a combination of reasons: First, as a DVD player for
movies (the first player I owned); and it would play the new games; and it
was compatible with the PS1 games; and it's price was within reason.

Three of those four reasons don't apply this time.  (Not interested in a
Blu-Ray player.  It won't play the old games using my carefully made
collection of Saves (the "cheap" unit).  Even the "cheap" unit is out of
line in price.)

This time around, I'm displeased with how things seem to be going.

so why not get an xbox 360 and play it on that, then?

the PS3 is quickly becoming a joke. it's almost like sony are trying
to piss off their customers, frankly.

And dont even get me started on how we need to pay an extra £125 ($250) for
a machine that is *SUB* standard vs the American and Asian versions in terms
of hardware- didnt SONY promise backwards compatibility for
everyone?..........and as for the delayed release........and crap online
multiplayer......and poor game choice.........

SONY can stick it up their arse.........XBOX 360 for me I
reckon...............

Funny but with only DAYS to release places like GAME, AMAZON, PLAY, TESCOS
ad nauseum are still trying to get people to reserve a
console............Wii and XBOX 360 were already sold out this close to
their releases..........

Lets hope that the Europeans, Aussies, New Zealanders etc all vote with
their feet and screw SONYs release.........that'll maybe make them take this
market seriously.......

By the time I'll be getting a PS3, IF I do, they'll be selling that version over here as well.

All the Europeans I know are extremely angered by this latest news.
I don't understand it, why certain versions of the same hardware,
won't allow the backwards compatability. Is it space-saving?
220Vac power supplies don't take up that much more space than
our 120Vac ones. Maybe I'm missing alot here.

Same with the different content, I think that is only
[>>>XBox360Live  -   PS3 MP Online<<<<<<< based content.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the PS3 only backward compatable
with the adaptor that used your old PS1 and PS2 memory cards?

Glad I bought a refurbished XBox when the 360 craze hit.
Cheap price and I'm learning the controller.
Will take alot more practice though.

To the guys who have a 360: Is the controller the same?

Well, I'm pretty heavily invested in the PS series, as far as the games I

Yeah.  If that's what they're trying to do, it's working.

so? you don't have to get rid of them just because you bought an xbox
instead of a PS3 :) *looks at his stack of 30-or-so PS1 games*

Well it certainly worked on me, seeing as last summer I  (despite
having  60+ PSX & PS2 games) had enough of the fuckwittery surrounding
the PS3 and bought a 360.

Absolutely terrible hardware reliability aside, I can't recommend it
enough as a gaming machine.

And now with games like Mercenaries II and GTA4 also coming to the
360, there really is no justifiable reason any more to want a PS3.
