I still haven't figured out how to eliminate the need for the CD at all
(VERY annoying to have to needlessly switch CD's just because of copy
protection).

You CAN use a copy of the CD's, and use a modified gta-vc.exe, available
at http://go.to/gamefix, but then it still needs a CD..

Maybe copy the CD image and mount it with Daemon Tools?

Buy a copy of the game, it's cheap enough to find anywhere if you look
hard enough.

With an official copy of the game you can the use a 'No CD' program to
get around the copy protection.

Or you could be a total pirate and LimeWire it, and at
approximately 750mb I'd defnitely advise it.

That's what I did.  Got a legal copy of GTASA, used BitTorrent to download a pirate copy, and used the
cracked .exe file, which doesn't need a disk in the drive to run.  Simple, just like me.  :)

That's why I also never used Rockstar's 1.1 patch.  I'd have to go back to putting the DVD in the drive to
play it.

Glad to hear that you got a legal copy, I only wish more people would
think about doing that. How much is GTAIII or VC for the PC now anyway?
A tenner? A score? I remember seeing the double pack second-hand for a
a fiver!

<sigh> I remember the times when if I wanted a copy-protection free game
I'd have to reverse engineer the tracking of the disk. Some BBC games
were notoriously difficult, I remember Exile being especially hard (I
did like the messages from the authors though. Funnily enough I had
been up all night).

Well, Rockstar *are* a company and companies do like having loads of
the folding stuff. I really don't blame them for implementing a system
that requires an original disk, but they should have put a bit more
though in to the patches.

That's another reason I prefer the PS2 version, my PC will sometimes
play SA and sometimes decide not too. I really hate using a PC so can't
be arsed to switch off or deactivate modules running the crappy
operating system either.

Cheers,
Rob

For me it's not so much that they require the disc to be in the drive,
it's that they keep it spinning (despite the only thing on the disc being
music files - which are copied to the hard drive during normal installs so
don't need to be constantly accesse past the initial disc check), wearing
out my CD/DVD drive. :/

CD checking can also be a pain if you have several different games you play,
or if you have several CD drives (my machine has 3, CD RW, DVD and DVD RW)
and you can't remember which drive you used to install it. I also have GTA
SA installed on my laptop (for when I'm stuck in hotels away from home) and
I really don't fancy having to cart CDs around the country as well as the
other stuff that goes with it. If nothing else there's the risk of the disk
getting lost or damaged. All the games I have are legit (about the only way
you can get Halflife 2 to work properly) but I do use CD patches because I
want the CDs to stay intact.
