I can't be the only one to notice that the vehicles in GTA2  almost all
appear to be over 50 years old (eg, the Jefferson looking like an old
Cord, or the Z-Type resembling a 1930s Mercedes).

In fact, the newest vehicle in the game seems to be the Furore - and if
that model doesn't predate 1975, I'll eat crow.

So...why all the old vehicles?

It's based in the 80s, so the sports cars etc are right for the time.
Then we have the old reliables, which even appear in GTA san andreas,
the ones which just keep on truckin' and then we have the modded low
riders, though there are far too many of the original cars too, which
means people in San andreas are driving round in cars from the 50s etc
instead of them being rare classics. Maybe It's all shot in Cuba? :O)

It's probably just being lazy, so they don't have to bother
re-designing a huge bunch of cars for each game

Sorry to be a pedant, but the manual says that it's set 'Three weeks in
to the future....'.

Sorry :o)

Cheers,
Rob

Each vehicle had to be distinguishable from a top-down, low pixel-count
image. It's probably just to make them recognisable rather than any age
concerns.

yeah, and it was fun trying to design your own cars so they looked
good from top down.

A theory of mine is that Rockstar didn't want the game to look too
similar to the original GTA or GTA:London1969 for fear of buyers seeing
screenshots and thinking "Ah, more of the same then".

I remember seeing a wireframe picture of a car from GTA2 so Rockstar
obviously went to a lot of trouble in designing them. If you notice,
they take damage in at least 8/10 different places. Even the headlights
go out if you smash in to something!

I'm sure there's at least one car which is based on a Stingray, I
distinctly remember the odd looking rear end. Even top-down it's
visible (At least it is to me, then again I'm on crack).

The Z-Type that the Zaibatsu drive always reminded me of the updated
(circa Batman Returns) Batmobile. No idea why!

Cheers,
Rob
