Yeah.  I do that for sport, sometimes.  I also like to derail trains
(especially the lone engine from End of the Line) and push the engine or
cars onto highways and such, and listen to the peds and drivers ("One hour
left on my shift -- and now this.").

The trains seem to be very rare. Is there a reliable way for finding one?

Sure.  Go to any station and wait by the tracks.  One should come within a
minute or two.  Some stations seem to generate them faster than others.
Unity and the one in Northern LV (Bell?) are pretty good.  The one in SF
(Cranberry?) is rather bad.

You can drive the trains forward or backward, but if you want a train facing
a particular direction, stand near the tracks and look the OTHER direction.
(Trains, like other spawnables, spawn more readily when you're not
watching.)  It's not 100%, though.  Sometimes the trains suddenly pop into
existence (down the tracks, a ways) right before your eyes (just like cars).

Now, the lone engine I was talking about is only available during the last
half of the last mission in the game.  It's a cool one, because it
accelerates faster than any of the car-towing engines, and it can derail
spectacularly, flying through the air a great distance.

If you have done the quarry missions, you can repeat the mission where
you have to move the barrels off of the track. As soon as the timer
hits zero, a train flies through at high speed. Try putting a load of
vehicles on the line and watch what happens!!!

My efforts with that mission have revolved around trying to RIDE the Bullet
Train.  It sits patiently in the tunnel to the north until 15 seconds before
your time is up -- or until you approach it too closely.  However, it IS
possible to clear the tracks and spawn a jetpack before the train comes.
You can hover over the tracks and drop down onto the train.  Problem: the
tunnels knock CJ off the train.  There's a gap between the engine and the
first car that CJ can slip into -- when the train isn't moving.  It should
put him down low enough to keep him from getting knocked off.  I've never
been able to do it while the train's in motion.  As far as I know, that's
the fastest train in the game -- well above derailing speed.  I want to ride
it around the world.  I don't think it's allowed to derail.

By the way, if you try it, use the Flying Vehicles cheat.  You can fly the
'dozer there much faster, and it's better at clearing the tracks, too.  It
gives you a big time margin.  (This trick is courtesy of someone else; I
don't remember who.)

I mentioned this once before, in more detail.  You can probably Google for
it, anyone who's interested.

<snippy snip>

*cough* that was me I believe, and also involved using the "Vehicle O'
Death" cheat to make any user-car invulnerable. Great fun with one of
the Quarry missions that involves the explosives, you can cause
multiple explosions by blocking off a freeway and "dive bombing" them.

I'm not sure if I posted this or not but one idea I had was to get in
front of the train with a jetpack and let the train push you. Unlike
other fast moving things that whack in to CJ, this train doesn't harm
him at all. I think it could be to do with the jetpack, but I digress.

As long as you hold square and know roughly where the bends are (For
example, all the way at the southern near the quarry) you can manuevre
CJ in the right direction. I've got as far the bridge that leads over
to SF at least once.

I might even have it saved somewhere. You wouldn't believe how many of
your posts I've got stashed somewhere!

:o)

There's just no end.  That's what I love about GTA.

Bet that would be difficult for any great distance.

Yep.  Sounds tough.
