Need San Andreas Help

I am stuck on the "Sweet's Girl" mission where Sweet and his girlfriend
are being shot at by a rival gang and CJ has to drive over there and
kill the rival gang members. My gun shoots bullets but they seem
impossible to aim or totally ineffective. Also, the cars are really
tough to drive compared to those in Vice City. Lastly, if I use a
cheat, it seems like every other part of the game becomes more
difficult. Is San Andreas a lot more difficult to play than Vice City
or is it me?

Is there a better forum for San Andreas?

Firstly, this is probably the best forum for the game, it is just slow
as the game has been out for so long we've been there and done that
already.

Secondly, since Vice City the games seem to acknowledge that you have
cheated though I think it depends on how often for it to make a big
difference. I think using one cheat caused one of my garages to take
one less car but didn't find out til a lot later in the game.

Now for the mission. This particular one is usually a pretty easy one.
I am wondering if you've kind of rushed to this point without spending
time to build your shooting abilities, to collect the tags and to get
a few weapons together? Each gun has a learning curve and at the start
you need to fire it off a fair amount, at targets preferably, until
your rating for the gun goes up to hitman or so. Some weapons will
then change to two handed weapons and you'll get to shoot two of them
at the same time. Secondly most weapons can be auto aimed. I don't
know which version you have but you need to find out which button is
auto aim before you go into serious gunfights. Thirdly those tags give
you a handful of weapons inside your safe house which you can keep
collecting and build up a stock of before the gun shops open.

I think in most people's view the cars are actually much more lifelike
in this game, but they do tend to be rear end happy and will spin out
at the slightest excuse. There are also a couple of missions where
vehicles follow you which it seems much harder to shake them off, and
Sweet's Girl is one of those, but it isn't a hard mission and if
you're unhappy with that square pile of crap parked outside the
apartments to rescue Sweet in see if there is a different four door
car nearby, that's all it needs to be, four doors.

For tons of information on the game, maps for hidden weapons etc you
could try
http://www.gamefaqs.com/
but most of the guides are for the ps2 version, which is okay except
the buttons for each version are different, otherwise I think they're
pretty much identical. Hope that all helps and if you do need more
don't be afraid to ask.

I found it quite hard at first.

Getting the tags by this point is quite a high expectation, especially
if this is his first run through the game. Yes, it's useful, but almost
impossible without using a downloaded checklist.

I'd recommend getting the SMG from the railway station, it's behind a
wall in the car park. Ride up fairly slowly on a motorbike and shoot
the ones in front of you (shooting the guy in front while on a
motorbike is quite easy). If your bike takes a lot of damage and looks
like it's about to explode then accelerate and jump off it so it gets
clear of the area. Take out the guy up the stairs and any others on
foot that you missed.

good point, something I did almost without thinking to be honest, list
and map both. Good thing though is if you get it out of the way soon
enough you can save that game and use that as a starting point in
future, always a handy trick.

I didn't even know there was one there :O) There's another up in the
hills... can't recall where exactly but it's at the top of some steps
on a kind of patio... there's a map for weapons here

This is where we differ greatly. I come in through that arch/entrance
thing in the building, about half way along, from the rear, give me
some cover to take the guys out at the front then there's just the one
on the steps left

A quick and cheap way to build your shooting skills without getting the cops on your a.s is to put a car in
your garage, then use the gun you want to build up and shoot it until it explodes.  Then let the garage
door close, then open it again.  Repeat.  I built all my gun skills up in one evening doing it this way.

Or you can do it the hard way, if you prefer.  Up to you...

I did it by heading out to a remote area of the Badlands, to a certain cabin
that gets used later in the game. There's a car parked next to the cabin you
can use for target practice. Shoot at the *tyres* for as long as you want
and they will burst but the car won't explode. When I first did this I made
the mistake of thinking getting hitman level on the decent SMGs meant you
would also get it on the pray & spray micro SMGs.

I like standing near a safe house and doing a quick run back inside

That *REALLY* annoys me about San Andreas compared to GTA3/VC/LCS: that
you have to collect *all* of the collectables in the set to get your weapons
instead of getting one after every 25 (for tags, anyways - I guess photos
and horseshoes would be 13/26/38/50) you collect.  How does VCS handle it
with their red balloons?

> I'd recommend getting the SMG from the railway station, it's behind a
> wall in the car park.

There's also one on top of the big orange motel in Jefferson and another
on a patio just north of there (go up the twisty road and go right; on the
north side of the road is a house with a brick parking lot, which is the
place you want).  I always make a circuit of Los Santos to pick up all 3
SMGs after every mission there (in San Fierro & Las Venturas I normally
don't need to), plus:

I grab the Unity Station SMG first.

Then in Jefferson (or is it East Los Santos), a little north of the
Cluckin' Bell is a rusty orange building (recycling center or something)
with a thin alley behind it for a molotov cocktail.

I continue to the Jefferson Motel's roof for the SMG, then go up the road
and turn right to get the SMG on the patio of a house with a brick parking
lot (on the west side of the trailer park).

I follow the road west from there as it curves south to meet the road on
the north side of the Jefferson Motel, then west along that, under the
buildboard and straight through the parking lot 'til I reach the north/south
road with the hedge divider that the big Ammu-Nation's on. At the top of
that is a convenience store with an AK-47 in its parking lot.

West and south past the Pay & Spray to the northern lot of Interglobal
Studios - the one with the golf carts and RVs. On the northwest of the lot
is another AK-47.

Another couple of blocks south & west is the other Interglobal lot - that
one has a sniper rifle at the top of the stairs.

Then it's a fair ride back east to the Conference Center: on its
northwestern side is an armor, if I need it, and a silenced pistol on its
southeastern side.  After that, I head back to whichever hideout I want to
save at before the next mission.

It only takes a few minutes after each mission and is definitely worth the
effort.

My standard gun route is fairly short - I get into the airport by
parking my bike at the gates and hopping over the wall on the roof of a
car, then open the gates from the inside and ride in, and get the M5
from the west end of the airfield. Then I jump the gate and get a micro
SMG from under the flyover to the west of the airport by the car park,
then go and replace it with the SMG from Unity Station. Sometimes I go
to the movie studio and get a rifle, but I don't use rifles that much.

I like the way the machine guns add on to each other's tally. So
grabbing any kind is okay as they just build up the numbers.

Ah.  You guys and your pop-guns.  Go for the big stuff!

(1)  Hop the airport wall (by climbing on a car or motorcycle), swipe the
Dodo, land on that roof with the big radio tower (NE part of downtown), grab
the rocket launcher, fly off again.  (Yes, there's room to land and take
off.)

(2)  Swim over to LV, jack a car, haul balls to that parking structure in NW
LV, and grab the heat-seeker rocket launcher.  Hang around awhile for extra
pick-ups (every 6 minutes), unless the helis are a problem.  Head on back to
S LV and swim for LS (under cover of a bridge if helis are active) and lose
your stars one way or another.  (I just swam around under a bridge until
they FELL off, once.  For some reason, the cop-boats weren't around that
time.)

Kidding.

Sort of.

Well, (1) is very practical.  But (2) is a poor way to get power -- but a
very entertaining challenge.  There's also the minigun in the underground
parking structure in NE LV, near the V-Rock Hotel.  That's even more of a
challenge.  And the Sea Sparrow north of Verdant Meadows (which I'm pretty
sure is available from the beginning of the game).  You can also FLY over to
LV in the Shamal, if you're good at dodging missiles.  To land, fly low and
bail at the last second (to survive the fall), or grab a parachute before
you leave (from atop the World's Tallest Building in LS).  Lots of fun to be
had with (2) and its variations.  (Check your map afterwards.  Quite funny:
your bee-line through LV is highlighted, and the rest is still all
grayed-out.)

This is also the best MP5 pickup, since you get 130 rounds instead of
the usual 70 or so.

Get a better gun, there are many places where you can pick one up. See
for example the maps at http://hem.bredband.net/708145/. Weapons
skills help too with damage and range, you want to have at least
'gangsta' skill on whatever weapon you're using. But maybe you're just
too far if your shooting is ineffective?

In what way? The physics modelling is a little more realistic, but not
much.

It's hard to compare, but I think I got 'wasted' a lot more in San
Andreas than in Vice City.

If you are playing the PC version, you need to hold down the right mouse
button to aim. If not, I'm sure someone will reply with the specifics for
other platforms.

In my earliest runs through the game, I either used the sniper rifle to pick
them off, or approached slowly on a bike and did a forward driveby on them.

Again this one is PC specific, but when I first got the game I remapped most
of the keyboard controls to match Vice City and found little difference
while driving.

This is a very good place to ask questions about any game in the series.
Many regular posters here have played through the game multiple times and
should be able to answer most questions you could come up with.

First thing I do with this one upon arriving on the scene is to plow over

It is me again, dst. Thanks everyone for all of your advice. I am
embarrased to say that I finally realized on my own that I had
forgotten that I have to aim with the right mouse button. Then I tried
to get back to this thread but couln't find it. I thought I bookmarked
it but....  Anyway, today I finally found it and it has been
interesting reading all the good ideas.

I got a sniper rifle from Vinewood and that made the mission real easy.
In Vinewood I found several cars that were a pleasure to drive compared
to the wobbly junkers around Los Santos.

I think San Andreas seemed hard to me at first because I hadn't played
any video games in over a year. Instead I was flying RC planes and
practicing with an RC plane simulator. That hobby is a lot of fun but I
don't know if I should recommend it because  after a year it got a
little boring for me and it steals from time getting exercise.
