Hey.

It's awfully quiet in here. Nobody playing Vice City Stories here?

No, it's all wrapped up with a bow on it and a tag saying "Merry Christmas
Daddy, love Jessica" that's my 7 month old daughter, BTW.
And it's on top of MY wardrobe in a glittery silver Santa sack.
Even at that age she's got her mother's sadistic streak!

I'm currently working through Bully/Canis Canem Edit instead. Despite the
whitterings of Jack Thompson it definitely *isn't* a Columbine simulator.
However it does feel like a junior version of GTA San Andreas, but set in a
school and a small town rather than a US county. I'd like to see the Volcano
4000 make an appearance in whatever the next GTA game is. Might not have the
impact of a petrol bomb but it is pretty funny to watch.

One thing Bully has is dogs. Annoying little yappy things with a taste for
Jimmy Hopkins' flesh.

Not played or even got it yet but the first thought that came to mind
from the trailer was: Yay! Bart Simpson vs. Nelson Muntz & Gang. =:-)

Though, i have been playing VCS since it came out on 3rd November, I'm
at 17 % only. Damn these empires do take a lot of time to build. (But
yeah, I like it!)

Animals in a Rockstar game?

Indeed. There's one mission where you set fire to a paper bag containing
some, shall we say, dog byproducts outside the staffroom, pull the fire
alarm and get a teacher to put it out by stamping on it.

I've been playing with it a little, looking for weapons pickups and red
balloons.  Only finished the first mission so far.  Once I've stocked up on
artillery and gotten tired of looking for balloons, I'll start playing the
game proper, until I've opened the second island and will start looking for
stuff again.  This is how I've played all my GTAs, clear back to GTA3.

I wonder when the second island does open up. I'm still stuck on the
first one. The story seems to be quite long.

I'm too busy playing it. Have to say, the graphics are MILES ahead of
LCS!! To put it bluntly, they're fcking excellent!

Done a few missions so far and am absolutely loving it. In fact I'm
enjoying it tons more than LCS (which I'm still kind of 'meh' about).
Things I've noticed:

- Radio stations are looking very good, but it's too early to tell. I
do hope Fernando & Amy are back in some form.
- There are subtle changes to VC here and there, such as the bridge
shortcut to the airport/army base, which is a very welcome addition.
- I've tried a few heli spawn points, but there's nothing there yet.
- At first, unlimited patriots (yay!), but strangely no hunter (booh!)
in the redesigned base.

So, all signs are pointing to >>fcuking excellent<< But then I AM the
world's biggest Vice City fanatic. =)

Yeah, they're quite awesome! The contrast is (at game's night time) less
than LCS though, which is a pity. I usually play indoors, but even then
the screen gets hard to read.

I'm an 80s man myself, so I totally dig the radio stations. And Maurice
Chavez is back *pressing* the issues! Also, a very young Lazlo on the
rock station, who is being constantly told off by his co-host.

Yes, indeed.

They won't be, until you get to the second island. :/

There's a rhino, but you can't get into it. The frustration!

You'll like the fact that the fire fighter/ambulance/vigilante missions
now have a checkpoint after every 5 levels. Unless you're the sadistic
kind, of course..

Also, the missions in general are much more difficult than those in LCS.
I don't recall any difficult LCS missions. But in VCS, I have been
having some great difficulties with some of the more difficult missions.
I'm not sure it's a plus. Usually, the problem I have with them is that
they're long missions, and the tough part is at the end. So you have to
do all the other crap over and over again. This is where I hope they'll
learn from Saints Row, where you can immediately retry failed missions
in the same state you started them. That saves a lot of the bother.

The Empire Building (sort of similar to San Andreas' gang wars) is nice,
but a bit too easy IMHO. If you are fireproof (do the fire fighter
missions right at the start) and have free molotovs (get 40 red
balloons), then you can just lob molotovs all around you without
receiving any damage.

Too true. It's the only game where I frequently have to use the
dim/bright button of the PSP.

There would have been no point in blocking the bridges to the other

Didn't know that. Guess I have to try them then.

Oh yeah. "Havanna Good Times" was almost frustrating. Damn Cholos,
coming in from all angles and that stupid car chase in that extra slow
accelerating Pony! Fair enough, the Cholos are all shortsighted.

San Andreas had that too in some way. I only say "Trip Skip". VCS's
missions are quite long. I remember that LCS had shorter missions
because it was geared towards mobile gambling, like, hopping on the
train and play a mission until you reach your stop.

But won't you have to take care not to kill the shopkeepers?

About the Empire missions: I find the ones for the protection business
the easiest.

The ambulance mission is most useful. I like being able to run without
getting tired. Very nice for exploring, or cowardly evading enemies :)

A few missions raised my frustration so much that I had to restrain
myself from hurting the poor psp. Luckily I could. But over all I like
difficulty more than easy gameplay.

One thing frustrates me to no ends though.. previous GTA's had this
problem too. When you're in car chase and you're cutting corners and you
just scrape a light post. Sometimes, the light post tilts towards your
vehicle, grinding it to a total stop! And worse, it will take 5 seconds
or so before you can move again. The frustration buildup in that time
period, what with all the time pressure, scares me :P

>  San Andreas had that too in some way. I only say "Trip Skip". VCS's

There's "trip skip" in VCS as well, but you still have to make it to the
start of the mission somehow. And/or recollect armour, weapons, etc.

I hope they will add this in GTA4. I don't see why they wouldn't.
Realism? Right, as if I save myself on a floppy disk every night before
I go to sleep :)

I've done drugs, smuggling and pimp missions. Of those, pimping and
smuggling were easiest. Drugs was still quite okay, just a notch harder.

Well, I was thinking one could maybe fly around, but if you stray too
far get shot down in a flaming SA-stylee.

I wanna heli! Now!! They make doing missions so much more
fun/tolerable. =)

Oh and I thought some LCS missions were fcking hard, like the
tanker/chainsaw massacre one. So I'm not too thrilled to hear VCS
likely has even more difficulty.

The focus for me in GTA games is on free-roaming/exploring and
generally having insane fun, so I'd prefer missions to stress fun over
frustration. (The awkward PSP controls/small screen don't help either
in critical situations.)
We shall see.

The Portland Chainsaw Massacre's easy - being fireproof (which I tend to
do first thing after the game starts) and using molotov cocktails (which I
start collecting the instant the Doll's House blows up) does the trick
nicely. Also helps if you've got infinite sprint, too, though that's just a
luxury which I didn't have by that point in the game both times I played
through.  I suppose it might be more difficult on the PSP, but I wouldn't
know...

Easier on the PS2 yea, but its fcuking HARD on the PSP, mostly due to
the sh1tty controls + tiny screen. IIRC I did it in the end using an
uzi or mp5 - cuts 'em up nicely. Mwahaa! Pain in the a.s to restart
that one every time - which I had to do about 7x.

Anyhoo, I see VCS has some multiplayer functionality. Anyone tried that

I just kept on jumping away from those loonies, turned around, blasted
one then jumped away some more and so on. I found this mission rather
easy, even on the PSP.

Not yet. Too bad it does not work over the internet, or else we could

There's a .357 in the tanker, IIRC. So I just got that, and kept
spinning around to shoot whichever idiot came closest. One shot, one
kill. I think I succeeded that mission on all but one attempt. And I
still had a few shots left to kill the Idiot King when he came in. The
VCS missions are harder - I had trouble with a few missions, which
didn't happen in LCS much. But, the missions are a lot more interesting
I think. The fact that the missions had to be short for on-the-move
gameplay restricted how interesting they could be.

Nah, I know someone who's 6'7" who loves VC ;o)

Can anyone give any basic information on VCS? All the reviews I've read
haven't mentioned any new vehicles (Except for the water-based and
amphibious ones) and haven't made any mention of the format - does it
still start on the east island and then unlock the other islands to the
west?

This might be the kick in backside I need to buy a new PSP instead of a
shiny new Wii.

Come to that, I need a new TV now too: Note of advice to people with
integrated VHS/DVD players on the TV's - Take good care of the video or
disc drive as if it stops functioning the rest of the TV is liable to
not work :o(

There's a few that stuck to my head. A new motor bike which is like an
upgraded sanchez, but with better speed. The police bikes are updated and
are bigger, which makes them nice to drive even when the tires are flat.

There's a new 'copter that has onboard cannons and is otherwise very
small. And there's a bicycle, but I've only used it once. It's more a
gimmick than something useful. It can go quite fast though.

You start on the western island, with access to the center islands (at
least the one with the Diaz mansion), and have to unlock the eastern island
halfway through the game.

You can swim, but that too is more of a gimmick, and nice that you don't
die when you hit the water. You can't swim very far though, you'll
simply drown after a given fixed distance if you don't reach a shore
that's low enough for you to jump onto.

And then, there's the Empire Building. You have to conquer property from
enemy gangs, and build commercial buildings on them. For each type of
commercial building, you get to do side-missions to gain respect. It's a
nice extra addition that will keep you playing for a little while
longer. Plus, you get to keep on doing those missions for ever and ever,
which is a great motivation to keep on coming back to vcs.

You sure mean the Streetfighter, do you? Or were you talking about the

I've not yet come across a bicycle. Is there a spawning point for it?

Will this change at some point in the game? Maybe something of a "swim
school"? I can understand, that you can't swim to the other island at
the beginning of the game, but once it's unlocked maybe?

Yes, the Streetfighter. I didn't notice the other one you mention. I
tend to steer clear from anything resembling the Faggio. Even the
bicycle is faster!

I found it in, I think, Little Havana. But maybe Little Haiti as well.
It was very early in the game so I don't recall it well.

It's still the same when on the second island.

Oh, the new jetski is very nice too. Like a pcj600 but then on water!

The Manchez bike, if it's the one you mean, was unlocked after
completing the "Bumps And Grinds" offroad racing courses in LCS.

That's good, I hope more SA ideas have been incorporated. I could
handle a bike with two wheels flat quite expertly in SA, so I've no
concerns there!

I really hope it's the Maverick that's featured on the boxart for VC. I
was a little disappointed that that wasn't included. The Sea Sparrow
made up for that though, as did the Hunter.

> You start on the western island, with access to the center islands (at

Cool. When I get hold of the game, as I'm sure like-minded others are
trying, I'm going to spend a lot of time attempting to get to the
"forbidden" islands early.

So that's one plan out the window then! Can you jump on to boats and
suchlike? Maybe jack passers-by of their hard won jetskis?

> And then, there's the Empire Building.
<snippy snip>

Now that sounds like a cool feature. From what I've read it progresses
through the game. It'll be nice to finally run Vice City like Tommy
Vercetti should have. I take it gangs don't shoot on your patch of the
empire?

> Decisions, decisions...I bought it for both GTA versions, and I don't

Admittedly I only thought of buying the PS2 port of LCS after my PSP
died, but after playing through a few of the early missions I didn't
regret it. The use of a better control system was the main factor, for
me anyway.

No, it's the Streetfighter. But probably doesn't differ much from the
manchez (which I do now recall indeed)

It's called "Little Willie", and it's really small. It has a small
pyramid-like construction, and can seat just 1 person. It's not too fast
either, but you can get it from your appartment on the second island and
it can shoot. Which is nice :)

I've tried some classic approaches, but it is damn hard. There's no
boats or planes anywhere in sight. The bridges are impenetrable walls,
even the air above it. Maybe an approach would be speeding a car on a
ramp-like structure into the water, and hope you can swim the rest of
the distance.

Didn't see any while on the first island.

Taking over enemy empires makes them angry at you. They'll drive by in
big suv's and shoot you with ak47's! I'm not sure how exactly it works,
but I think that for each takeover, you get at least 1 such visit. And
they'll try to attack your empire every few (in-game) hours. Such an
attack doesn't mean they'll take over your patch, it just damages it. So
you don't have to respond to such attacks and mind your own business.
Sooner or later you'll have to repair the buildings though, before it
collapses.

I didn't like the idea of constant attacks, so the first thing to do is
to try and take over all enemy empires as soon as possible. After that,
the attacks quickly stopped.

Well, I got used to it. I don't think the PS2 controls were much better,
except for the drive-by's and the helis. The analogue controls suck on
both the ps2 and the psp when you have to target stuff using the
cross-hair. Luckily, such missions are few, although there *is* a
shooting range which requires this skill, but it's optional.

It *is* possible! Using a slightly similar tactic. Woohoo!

Like in every 3D GTA-Game before, the other cars will move aside very
slowly and if you try to pass by, the sure as hell try to move to that
lane. Most of the time you're better off without the siren.

I've never seen them move over for the bike...  The car and trucks, ya...
Not for the bike...  Perhaps I'm moving too fast, eh?

That's the thing: I usually find it better to hoon along without siren.
With the siren on, traffic movements are less predictable, and I
usually crash more.
Plus the wailing gets on my nerves. =)

Indeed. Same here.

I did notice (or is it my imagination?) that traffic seems more eager to
move towards the lane you are driving in (regardless of the type of
vehicle you drive). And of course, usually just before you are about to
pass them!

It may also be that they are actually trying to get out of the way,
since I switch lanes rather often, but simply switch lanes much too
late..

You can fix that by driving in the centre of the road. Cars in the same
lane as you (ie: Going in the same direction) have much more of a
chance to be out of your way as you pass them. The other benefit is
that oncoming traffic stops which you can avoid with ease.

I really wish in future GTAs that they implement the ability to have
the lights flashing on emergency vehicles but no siren.

I wanted to drive around in K.I.T.T in GTA:VCS, so I could turbo-boost
my way over the traffic. But no, they forgot to include THE cult icon of
the early 80's era!

That, and the A-team van obviously.

The 'Back To The Future' Delorean mod for the PC version of VC is quite
interesting. Whoever made it basically made a car that acts like a
Skimmer seaplane but can also drive on the road as normal.

It's a bit like the flying cars cheat when you fly a Rhino.

I would have liked the ability to mod vans in SA. The Burrito van looks
a bit like the A-Team van though.

I thought in SA you COULD mod a van to look like the A-team van
(black/red/big wing on it). Course can't be exact for licensing
reasons, which goes for all gta cars.

I'd think the A-team branding would be cheap to use nowadays, same for
Knightrider. Or is thise a forebode for an "A-Team The Movie!"? :)

.. and there actually is, I had to check on IMDD:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0429493/

How sucky is that going to be without the original cast? I also learned
today that the actor playing Hannibal has been dead for 12 years!

I'm feeling really old now..

That must be one of those guys I've seen driving around in an Idaho in
Vice City, where part of there heads stick through the roof. (Read:

It's the other way round this time.

I can't say anything about the Wii but if VCS does not make you want to
get a PSP, no other game probably will.

Uh, okee. I have it all seperate. My VHS (JVC) still works like on the
first day and it's approx 6 to 7 years old or so and I won't throw it
away a fine working piece of consumer electronics. (Why should I?)

Anyway, what the tech-heads miss with HDTV, Blu-Ray and whatnot new
technology is that even though picture and sound quality is better with
it, the TV program probably still sucks. With the PSP now being able to
play podcast and especially videopodcasts, my usage of the TV set
dramatically dropped.
