Hi all.

Got my copy of GTA: Vice City Stories today in Zürich at Softridge.
Luckily, they had the US-Version ready, so no more waiting another week
and no censoring due to stupid german laws which would not apply in
Switzerland anyway.

Well then, can't really write too much about it, mainly because I want
to play the game instead of writing newsposts. =:-) For the story and
some such, there are probably tons of websites around by now.

The graphics look as 80ish and as much Vice City as it is possible. This
time, you start on the (former) second island. The bridges are again
closed because of a hurricane warning.

The soundtrack is again top. Lots and lots of good 80s music like Run
DMC - It's like that, New Order - Blue Monday, Frankie Goes To Hollywood
- Relax or Paul Young - Come back and stay. Espantoso is back too, Vice
City Public Radio too and Lazlow... yeah, what would GTA be without
Lazlow anyway?

As for the gameplay, there is one novelty. When you get busted or
wasted, you can bribe the police or medicals to return your weapons for
2000 $ or so. Combined with the taxi (which is bach too), this is just
great. You just fail the mission and loose some money but can retry a
mission without the hassle of driving to Ammu-Nation first. Now if only
I had enough money for the bribes yet.

Jet-Skis are in the game too. At least there is one driving by in the
intro and on a screenshot on the back of the box. I've not yet advanced
that far in the game to actually could have rode one.

That's it for now. The PSP can't wait any longer.

I'd love to hear that it's a great game, but I must admit to being
disappointed at the news that it won't make it to the PS2.  I don't own
a PSP and won't buy one, so unless one comes in a cereal box someday, I
won't have one, and VCS sounds good (speaking as a big GTA fan).

I don't know if the proper tack to convince Rockstar North to port it
to the PS2 is to make sure enough get sold for the PSP or simply
inundate them with letters saying we'll but it for the PS2.

Well, if this game will not make you get a PSP, none will ever, I guess.

Sending them a mail is something you can always do. I must say, I got
Liberty City Stories for both the PSP and the PS2 and I'd love to see
Vice City Stories for the PS2 as well, just because the controls would
be better there. The PSP lacks two shoulder buttons and a second analog
stick for "proper GTA gaming". =:-) But don't get me wrong, the controls
are IMHO still way better than those of e.g. Star Wars irgendwas where
you use the d-pad for strafing and the /\,[],O,X for moving around.

Oh and since you can access the radio stations via the game menu, the
PSP is a great walk-man as well. =:-)

Don't rule out this game coming to the PS2, no matter what has been
said.

They will have 3 set criteria for porting it to the PS2, as with any
game that gets ported (Assuming it's a viable option to port the game
due to control issues, platform uniqueness, etc). They are....

1. Will it break even on the costs of porting and redistribution and
what will the profit margin be.
2. Are there any licensing issues standing in the way.
3. Are there any current or upcoming market factors that might affect
the games profitability.

It could be possible that number 3 has made them a bit jittery and say
its not coming to PS2 because of the upcoming launch of the PS3 at the
end of the year (At least for the non European areas) and GTA4 in
October/November next year.

I'd say "never say never". At the moment it seems unlikely that they'll
do a PS2 port, as most resources are being pushed for other projects
(GTAIV being the major one). Still, now VCS and Bully are finished and
widely released, it should free up some staff.

I'm sure we could start a petition or something. After all, LCS is (To
the best of my knowledge) the PSP's biggest selling game and it also
sold pretty reasonably on the PS2 for non-PSP owners.

I might check the actual statistics and see just how badly it did in
Rockstar's eyes not to port VCS.

They're definitely a user-vehicle.

A friend of mine sent me a long video of basic gameplay and this is
going to push me to get another PSP.

Wohoo!! I should get my copy on Monday!! =)

As to porting it to PS2, like I said, it's unlikely considering they're
working on GTA4.
Plus I think they'd have announced any plans to port it by now.

Still, bit of a gap between now and GTA4 release, so it's still
theoretically possible.

Apart from a few lead staff who have some crossover roles (Like for
example, Dan Houser), the same staff do not work on each and every game
that comes out of Rockstar North. The amount of work that goes into
each production is just too great and it would seriously impact on
deadlines.

There is a different crew for each "line" of games so each project is
being worked on concurrently. Therefore it is entirely possible for
them to bring out a port of VCS without impacting at all on GTA4 (And I
suspect the work on that has been ongoing since San Andreas went gold
if the production schedules for it are anything to go by, work began on
San Andreas just as Vice City was being wrapped up so its fair to
assume GTA4 will have a similar if not more intense production
schedule).

Personally I can't see why they would not release VCS on the
Playstation 2. It would make some excellent filler while we await GTA4.
Unless of course they are worried about diluting the brand so close to
a major release.

Also, the ambulance mission has become significantly easier. For one,
after level 5 you reach a checkpoint, which means you'll continue from
there the next time you play! Also, it seems as if there is
significantly less traffic when playing the mission.

There's also a checkpoint after level 10. But as compensation, you now
have to reach level 15! Just did it, man was that a bore at the end!
