does spawning really affect saves?

I got fed up with the awkwardness of not being able to do the
vigilante cheat in the xbox SA so as a trial I did my first spawn of a
rhino early on just to see what damage it did to my score etc. so it
knocked ten points off , boohoo, but obviously when it came to saving
it warned me that it could affect my game as I had used a cheat.
Honestly this is just something I haven't done in SA so of course I
saved it as a completely separate one and have no plans to touch it
until I know it isn't going to wreck something later on.

So, how safe is it? Can I go on and use this as a starting point for
future games or is there something to worry about?

Ok here is something that is going to ruin your day possibly. Due to
the memory mechanism on the PS2 version of the game it is sometimes
possible for a savegame to affect another game played on the same
session (I.e. before you have reset the console). It's very rare it
happens though but basically you can play one game, cheat to buggery on
it, start a new game where you don't cheat and be marked as a cheater
all the same.

Whether this issue exists on the XBOX version of the game I cannot say
but why not err on the side of caution. Personally if I am going to use
the cheats I remove the memory card before using them and do not save
again until I have reset the console.

Apart from reducing your score in certain areas I am unaware of any
serious gameplay issues caused by cheating other than side effects of
the cheats themselves (Some of them cannot be turned off such as the
pedestrians rioting, etc).

well it was just the one cheat and as it is the xbox version i can't
remove a card or anything, and I was kind of hoping I could use it as
a starter point, but if it DOES affect other game saves etc it isn't
worth it. I've been through the game a couple of times virtually
without the reward for vigilante so I can work without it, but there
are times, like black project, when I have been damned lucky to get
through on a tiny bit of life left.

I've never had any problems whatsoever related to saving whilst cheats
are active. This goes for all four of the 3d GTA games.

By the way, have you tried using an HPV1000 for Vigilante? It makes
things a helluva lot easier as you can fire forward on a bike (You'll
need an absolute s**tload of ammo tho').

Cheers,
Rob

Only about 5000 or so.  Note that it's a *LOT* easier with the bulletproof
(actually, I think it's everythingproof) HPV1k you can get during the bank
robbery mission with Catalina. [when the cops arrive on their bikes,
manually aim and kill Catalina to fail the mission - grab one of the bikes
and get the Hell out of there.  Dump it in your Palomino 2-car garage (since
it's closest) and haul a.s down to Dillimore to get rid of your 3-stars;
best to have another bike in the garage that you can swap to, of course.

oh, i didn't know that. I'm crap at finding bullet proofs etc. Nice to
know, thanks. It is too late for me though as I am one of the people
who likes to get all the 'boring' stuff out of the way as early as
possible and keep a save. On the ps2 the only thing I don't have in my
starter file is the fire missions as I am really crap at those, no
matter what people tell me to do. once they get out of their cars I
have had it and that usually happens on the first mission :O)

You should do what I do - put out the flames then run the bastards over. It
doesn't help you get further into the mission, but you feel happier about
failing.

heh heh, that's me to a tee. I am always blowing the sh.t out of
people after failures or even after successes, such as the guy with
Jizzy when you have to get his phone. I always blow the sh.t away as
soon as I get a shot at him. I do wish they would let Catalina pop out
of her shack when you have finished her missions.

And here I am, wondering if that's a euphemism for something.

I've just put GTA3 on the kids' PC - my wife was a bit aggrieved at Diaz's
rants in VC (chopping up one of Cortez's enemies with a chainsaw didn't seem
to bother her, though). Anyway, I watched the cut-scenes leading up to the
first mission and was left wondering why Catalina was so much hornier in
GTA3, even though it post-dates GTA:SA by almost a decade and generally has
worse graphics.....

Catalina looks slightly different on the PC and XBox compared to the
PS2. It seems she's spent some time in the polygon modelling
department, maybe the same one that Jill Valentine went to between
Resident Evils 2 and 3.

Dunno, it's only recently that I came to realise they were the same
person :O)

I'm awful for dodging cut scenes. I probably saw more of GTA3's than
others since though.

I think that it's everything-proof. In the entire game there are only
two or three obtainable bikes with special properties, and this is one
of the better ones.

Uh, that's quite a lot. I usually use about 2000 rounds I think.

But the problem with doing Vigilante on a bike is that sometimes the
bad guys have shotguns and those really hurt. It only takes two or
three shots and CJ is wasted. If that happens, something else must be
done, like getting in front of them and letting them have a rocket in
the face.

Yeha, when my glitch trick didn't work for like the third time I took
the bike on a run and got up to level nine, I think it was, then the
fudging gun ran out :O(

You can generate infinite ammunition for your machine gun by going to
any Ammunation, buying an SMG or other submachine gun, going to do the
range trials by walking into the marker, cancelling it before it starts
and repeating ten times. It effectively doubles the ammunition you have
at that current time for certain weapons you are carrying such as the
submachine guns and once it goes past 9999 rounds the counter
disappears. More than plenty to do the vigilante missions.

Oh, while its *technically" not infinite ammunition, I have never seen
the counter reappear to start counting down from 9999 rounds once it
has disappeared so I think the counter goes screwy.

The first time around I did that, but on subsequent games I get all the
misc stuff over as soon as possible. Ammu-Nation doesn't open until the
completion of "Doberman" which is fairly late in to the Los Santos
missions, so I use alternative methods when doing Vigilante early.

A point-blank Desert Eagle shot works quite well at popping a tire on
the criminal's cars, regardless of where you hit it. Sometimes it's
also possible to free-aim and quickly blow the gas tank. Great fun if
you hit the lead car as the subsequent explosions set the others off
too :o)

On a no-stars mission I simply head across a pond and collect the
oyster or snapshot rewards. After that I max out the seperate weapon
skills.

Rob

:O) You're teaching an old dog old tricks... What we're discussing is
a save point which we make as early as possible in the game with as
many of the long and tedious things done, then each time you want to
play from the start you play it instead of a genuine fresh game.
Obviously the ammunation shop isn't open early enough, so on the ps2 I
can use the vigilante glitch which for some reason doesn't seem to
work on the xbox. It did once give me the next level but it just
doesn't seem to work like the ps2 version. Hence the attempt to
complete it on a bike, which I hadn't tried to do for ages. I actually
did better than I used to, back then I wouldn't have got past level 6
or 7.

I can't recall which gun it was but I did manage to get one back into
the 9999 range recently. I think it was the desert eagle, which I
quite happily use as much as possible once it's feasible to use it.
