Parachute Failure...

Ever have a parachure failure?  Leaving Verdant Meadows in my Rustler I
turned south for my next mission in Red County.  Climbing to a safe
altitude, I bailed out over the mission symbol and pulled the chute...
Imagine my surprise when the chute deployed but I continued to accelerate
until smucking myself on the ground several seconds later...  Needless to
say I was presented with the much hated "Wasted"...

 What the hell?

Nope - NEVER on the PS2 version. Maybe CJ's just gotten too fat! ;)
Shoulda tried aiming for some water, as you'd have likely survived.

Seems strange though - are you playing the Xbox version?

:O) Seriously, it really has done it more than once. In fact it did
it once and when CJ rematerialised he dropped down dead immediately.
Don't know what the cause of that was though!

I need to double check this, but I saw a friend spawn a jetpack whilst
floating with a parachute once, and after pressing the "eject" button
(Or key, mighta been the PC version) the jetpack was left floating in
the air whilst CJ, naturally, became pavement pizza.

Funny thing was that when he respawned he still had the jetpack and
the parachute on.

As mentioned before, this could have been on the PC and thus
mod-related. I might still see if I can replicate it though.

Cheers,
Rob

I was over the Grove and had little to no steering control available...

happened to me a few times, one just the other day. Sometimes it
happened if I hit the button too soons after exiting a plane and other
times it seemed to be if I left it too late, which I guess is real
life. He looks like he as a chute but you can't control the speed etc

I don't think that was it...  I steered and "dove" for a bit before opening
it...

It's happened to me quite a few times. The nearest I can figure out is
that I freefalled and pulled the cord too late, then CJ's velocity
means that he doesn't slow down enough for the parachute to have an
effect.

By the way, has anyone else noticed that if you hold back on the
directional stick (Or the equivalent for XBox and PC) CJ runs a little
whilst landing? It's quicker than the usual landing.

Cheers,
Rob

yeah, it's probably the equivalent of bending your knees etc but I
always land that way nowadays.

Sorry to quote myself but I just had a thought: Maybe it's *because* I
was freefalling whilst I pulled the parachute cord.

I'm going to have a play later (Cleve's trains experiments are keeping
me occupied) so I'll check it. I doubt if it's altitude related.

Rob

*THAT* might be it...  I was at terminal velocity when I pulled the cord...

I don't think so.  I've pulled the cord lots of times after a long free-fall, and it always worked.  The only
time a parachute fails me is if I deploy it too close to the ground.  This is on the PC, BTW.  I haven't
played the PS2 version in so long that I can't remember if it does things differently...

I've also noticed that if I have 100% health and no parachute, I have a good chance of surviving the fall
with just a sliver of health left.  If I do have a parachute and fail to deploy it, it's splat city every time...

Pretty sure that wasn't it...  I've done free dives from a lot higher for a
lot further (Flight school, the cargo plane mission, etc) and it worked
just fine...

Parachute failures happen in "real life" so I suppose it's more of a
simulation than a game. ;o)

I think that the most annoying thing about the parachute is that if you bail
at altitude, you'd have a chance of surviving if you were allowed to skydive
rather than just flailing around like a dickhead. You could at least try to
get to water (which, unrealistically, doesn't even harm you if you hit it
after a 30,000 feet drop).

<off-topic>

I heard a while ago about one of the chaps nominated for a Darwin
award:

This guy was a trained and experienced skydiver and one day decided to
strap a camera to his hat to film the way down. He rigged up the hat,
checked the camera was functioning properly, got in the air and then
bailed out....only to realise he was so preoccupied with the camera
that he forgot to pack his parachute.

Rob

That would suck...  Haven't ever felt compelled to jump from a perfectly
good aircraft but I would think skydivers would have a checklist like us
pilots...

He usually mentions having sex with someone's mum at some stage of the
drop.  :O)

I haven't had it deploy and THEN fail him (unless I then use the "get out of
vehicle" command (triangle on PS2)).

I used to have a lot of trouble GETTING the chute to deploy.  The trick is,
you have to let him achieve "soaring" mode first.  It often won't deploy
until he's "soaring".

That's what happened...  I exited, fell for a few seconds in "speed" mode,
then opened the chute.  It opened, he went vertical, put his arms up as if
to take hold of the toggles, and continued to accelerate for the next few
seconds without any directional control (even had time to try to "pull up"
to slow down...  no effect) until *SPLAT*

I just had an absolute bitch of a run through flight school, including
the first time in a while I've had to retake more than one of the
exercises, for which I blame the xbox controls and a very sensitive
Joytech pad. Then on the first mission from there I go and fly so low
my damned plane sinks!

About the only thing that worked was the parachuting :O)
