So, VCS is out soon

Nobody seems too bothered, whereas as I'm practically wetting myself
with anticipation (not really. well a bit). Mostly cause I think VC is
still the best game in the series. :)

Could be forgiven for not noticing, as there seems to be practically no
publicity for it out there. Huh. Strange. We're racing up to X-mas
after all.

So, any info on content/technical changes over VC & LCS?

the lack of publicity is probably because it's coming out on PSP tbh,
which has hardly been a resounding success for Sony.

That is true. The problem is that there are no real killer games for it
yet. Okee, Tekken Dark Resurrection is here and there is GTA: LCS as we
probably all know. Then there are games like Burnout Legends and Wipeout
and (one of my personal favourites) LocoRoco. I guess for people that
want an inexpensive (I refuse to say 'cheap') portable game system, the
Nintendo DS is probably far the better solution.

What I personally like about my PSP is that it's a bit more than just
portable videogames. There is WLAN, the excellent webbrowser and (killer
app for me) podcasts! Once you played all your games to death it's great
fun to hear your favourite podcast or watching videos downloaded from
video.google.com while riding the train. You need a big flash-ram card
though. 32 MB is too small for that.

So all in all, the PSP is a great device if you like videogames AND
podcasts. If you only want to play games, check out the Nintendo DS too.
If you want to hear and watch podcasts, also have a look at the iPod. If
you're into both, the PSP might just be for you then.

Oh and for homebrew, better get a GP32x.

no, the problem is that it is trying too hard to be a portable
playstation, rather than an actual handheld console. the home and
handheld gaming markets are completely different, and thats where PSP
falls short.

that and the shocking loading times.

the PSP media functions, while commendable, aren't system sellers.
they couldn't convince me to keep mine. the video playback is
adaquate, though umd films have awful motion blur, and are too
expensive (it'll be dead as a movie format within 6 months) as an mp3
player it suffers from low storage size combined with the bulk of the
thing. as al all-in-one its not so bad, but it doesn't do any one
function exceptionally.

i'd suggest just getting a DS Lite and an mp3 player, frankly. the DS
is way superior as a handheld gaming machine.

can't argue with that.

Considering LCS used a modified VC engine, I don't think there'll be
too many technical improvements. Loading times have been mentioned.
Just about every preview I've read say that they're really not
noticeable compared to PS2's VC.

What is much more noticeable are the explosions, the particles in,
well, particular. Rockstar did say that they needed a 3d game engine
that would look great on such a small screen and personally I'd say
with LCS it definitely worked. Plus we can finally get our mitts on
helicopters.

Swimming has been confirmed too I think, with jetskis, I wonder if VCS
will use the same system as San Andreas for illegally going to areas
you haven't unlocked yet.

Cheers,
Rob

Did you say Jetskis?! Schweet. In no time everyone'll be trying to
push/drag those into safe house garages. :)

-The most crucial thing is for them to have enabled/implemented the
helis.
-Secondly, the draw distance on LCS was pathetic, so I'm hoping they
addressed that. (Must have, as otherwise there'd be no helis!) =P
-Oh and ffs let them have a VC-grade soundtrack to go with it.

Otherwise, all signs are pointing to promising. Just gotta pry myself
off the 360.

http://www.gtaportable.com/ has some shots of the jetskis, and they've
been confirmed by Rockstar. I mentioned this in the run-up to San
Andreas; why don't Rockstar give us somewhere to store some water
vehicles? Somewhere to store helicopters would be good too (Hyman
Condo, anyone?).

> -The most crucial thing is for them to have enabled/implemented the

Definitely confirmed. On the official site
(http://rockstargames.com/vicecitystories/ ) there's a video you can
download which has some footage.

I've heard it said that it would be pretty similar to San Andreas, so
considering Vice City's geography it shouldn't be too much of a
problem. VC is pathetically flat compared to the other games, so I
guess the only thing you're liable to smash in to invisibly would be a
downtown skyscraper.

Talking of which, I wonder what the ceiling height is like?

> -Oh and ffs let them have a VC-grade soundtrack to go with it.

According to R*'s Terry Donovan, we '...won't be disappointed'.

What's wrong with Verdant Meadows?  It's tricky to get them in there
without getting blowed up, but it can be done.  Don't try to go at the door
forward...  The main rotor will hit before the door opens...  gotta back up
to the door and get *REAL* close with the tail rotor.  Wait for the door to
open far enough and back it in...  The police helo in the screenshot below
was rotated after I backed it in so you could see the SAPD logo on the
side...  :)

Sorry Stephen, but last time I checked Verdant Meadows wasn't situated
in Vice City!

I found it annoying in VC that no Mavericks spawned on the eastern or
mid-islands. A couple of Sparrows do, but that's quite late in to the
game (And they're on rooftops).

A Sea Sparrow is parked semi-conveniently behind the Vercetti Estate,
but you need 80 packages first.

I do see you point though.

Out of all the helipads and other ideal locations for storing aircraft
across all the games, only SA has the ability.

During my 'testing' at Verdant Meadows to make sure I wasn't blowing smoke
I learned that doing a low pass over the hanger will get the doors opened
so you don't have to nudge it with the tail rotor.  Apparently it's the
proximity of your character, not the vehicle, that opens the doors and
that's why trying to get a large aircraft to open the doors can be
tricky...

Hm, I never had a problem with this. I've got the hangar stuffed full
of hunters & a maverick. You just hop out, trigger the doors, then fly
right on in. No nudging required. Besides, I find nudging big stuff
around tedious. :P

Of course things can *cough* go HORRIBLY wrong with CJ dancing between
exploding helis like a rag doll! Mwahaa! :)

Good point though - I'd like somewhere to save water vehicles. The boat
yard in VC would make a perfect place if they redesigned it slightly.

Playing with boats last night, wishing I had some place to store the police
boat I "found"...  So I decided to go on a rampage with it since it has
hull mounted firearms.  Starting with zero stars I found another police
boat.  I followed it around and shot at it with the boat's guns until the
other one blew up.  Still had zero stars...  Go figure...

It's because no-one takes boat cops seriously - not even other cops. They
even made a rubbish film about it with Bruce Willis and Sarah Jessica "Hit
With The Ugly Stick As A Child" Parker.

Doesn't a Sparrow spawn near Links View (on the ground)? The one that
starts one of the chopper checkpoint things.

IIRC they're all on rooftops. On the western island, one is on a low
roof in Little Haiti and another spawns on a reachable rooftop near the
Police Maverick downtown (The patio of the "G-Spotlight" mission).

On the eastern island on spawns on a low rooftop near Link's View and
the other is on top of the pink building you land on to complete "PCJ
Playground".

This all from memory, so I could be wrong...

Rob

Uzi-wielding jetskiage - fantastic! Just looking at the pics of VCS
already had me grinning. I know they're just publicity shots, but even
the videos suggests the graphics are more polished compared to LCS.

I don't really get why people keep moaning about VC being 'flat'...
Just how many mountains are there in Florida ffs?! ;)

Enough to flop onto Hyman Condo one hopes...

Good. After the poor SA & nondescript LCS soundtracks, I think they
might just have (finally) gotten the message. :)

In addition, I think it's a shame this'll be another Sony exclusive. I
would KILL to have VCS running in full shininess on the 360.

The preview over at IGN (Linked from the GTAportable page) mentions
that water will have much more significance this time. That's one of
the things I found odd about Vice City - considering how much water
there was, there weren't nearly enough water-based missions.

Fair dos, although on the PS2 the draw distance wasn't too hot even
though all it was plotting were buildings (Mind you, they are beautiful
to look at).

> Enough to flop onto Hyman Condo one hopes...

I'd say at least that. I wonder which safehouses we'll get to use this
time? I'd like the house with the helipad where you pick up Mercedes
from in one of the Film Studio missions.

I thought SA was pretty good. Sure, it had a lot of stuff I didn't like
but most (Well, nearly all) of the songs suited the mood of the game.

They haven't announced a PS2 version either. Looks like I'm going to
have to mug someone for their PSP.

GTA? A bad influence? Pah!

You're not the only one! *drools*

Just recorded the whole flash soundtrack with TotalRecorder off the
website yesterday. Though it's just a clip show, it's really fun for
half an hour until it repeats. If you haven't heard it yet, go take a
listen. =:-)

Is it November yet? My birthday normally is on the 29th of November.
This year, it's on the 3rd I tell you.

Only what is known from magazines and the website yet. Yes, I've seen
helicopters in the trailers!

I just saw a trailer for it. It's embedded in an article about Gothic 3
actually so I feel kind of silly linking to it but in case you're
interested: http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/736/736683p1.html

I think the trailer looks awesome, pure RockStar. I love how they nail the
whole 80's Miami Vice vibe. Rockstar really are more like film artists than
any other game developers. Other game developers who *think* they are
artists are usually pretentious hacks.

The one thing I don't like from the trailer is the love interest actor
sounds pretty bargain basement unfortunately. But she probably is given this
is a PSP title.

You may need to refresh it a few times before the VCS trailer spawns.

In most productions, including film, a storyboard is put together with such
"talent" (usually studio or crew) providing the voices. It's possible
they've done the same in this case. I think Lance Vance is a bit too geeky -
but I suppose it depends how much earlier than VC that VCS takes place.

1984 apparently.

You're right, Lance, IMHO, is one of the weaker GTA characters.
