Vehicle gifts (SA)

Cleve - 05 Oct 2006 00:11 GMT Somebody mentioned the other day that you get body armor when you enter a swat van. I had to check that out. I tried other vehicles, too. Here are the ones I know about:
Police car (even country style): Shotgun and/or 5 rounds
Swat Van: Body Armor
Ambulance: About 1/8 added to your life-bar (pretty stingy).
Apparently nothing for an FBI car, Rhino, Barracks, or Fire Truck.
Hmm. I forgot to try a police bike.
The "gifts" only work once per spawn (that it, you can't get out then back in to get more), and putting the vehicle in a garage (and closing and opening it) doesn't seem to renew them, either.
I also notice another oddity: For an emergency vehicle in a garage, the license plate changes when you close and open the garage door. For regular vehicles, that doesn't seem to happen.

I am just wondering, since playing the xbox one, if they have repaired that stupid thing where a crash on the front of the vehicle damages the rear. I think it may have happened with the limo which you use to pick up Toreno, but otherwise I am fairly certain rear end damage is actual rear end damage.

Had no idea about such gifts. Think there is there a way to cheat the once-per-spawn rule? The body armor one could be convenient.

Rob White - 05 Oct 2006 13:49 GMT > Except the only time you see one of THOSE vehicles is when it is > screeching to a halt an unloading a bunch of machine gun wielding > loonies. Here's a neat trick: Lob a molotov at them. If you listen out you can hear the van doors slamming as everybody exits and with good timing you can set them all alight.
The good thing about this is that one molotov rarely sets any vehicle on fire, let alone an armoured SWAT van.
I find an M4 just too damn satisfying though, rat-tat-tat-tat-tat...

Coincidentally I was playing the new xbox version this afternoon and I had started the mission to ram the ambulance. When I rammed it and jumped out a cop car hit my car and the cop jumped out, I had to shoot him and next thing my stars are rising quicker than an erection in a brothel and I am just shooting frantically. I grabbed the ambulance and raced for my destination and I don't know if it's just imaginary but things seem tougher when cars are chasing you in this version, one of the two cars chasing hit me and knocked me onto the highway, where my ambulance landed on its roof. I just had to grab the nearest vehicle with massive stars and head for a safe house. I got to the casino and save point, and when I came back with no stars there's the big cop truck right in front of me with nobody in it! tadaaaaaa. Nice prize for my frantic action.

Cleve - 05 Oct 2006 19:10 GMT > I > got to the casino and save point, and when I came back with no stars > there's the big cop truck right in front of me with nobody in it! > tadaaaaaa. Nice prize for my frantic action. Most of the time, it's not too hard to steal a given vehicle. Hold a stand-off near a safe house that has a garage. (Stand on the roof, or drive around in a tank.) When the target vehicle gets close, hit the ground and go for it. (The thing that helps is that once CJ enters "get in the car" mode, he seems to be immune to gunfire. Just run on up to the occupied vehicle. As soon as they get out, tell CJ to get in. They won't be able to scratch him.) Make a dash for the garage to save the vehicle. That can be hard with all the gunfire. (Even if it blows inside the garage (without CJ in it), closing the door will repair it.) Then dash for the safe house door and get a change of clothes. Verdant Meadows is very nice for this method, since the places the law vehicles come from are so predictable once you get to know the place.
Another Verdant Meadows trick to try: See if you can lure the vehicle you want into the aircraft hangar and shut the doors on it. (Don't run straight out, or they'll probably follow you. Whip around a corner and run around the back of the hangar to lure them to the back of the hangar.) Then go change clothes to lose the stars. I don't think I've tried this yet, but it should work. Might be tricky.
Here's another way (if you don't mind dying). Hold a stand-off at a hospital. When the vehicle you want appears, stand near where you're going to reappear and let them kill you. When you reappear, sometimes the vehicle is left behind and you can just grab it (or toss out the driver and jack it). (If it's occupied and drives away, see if you can chase it down in another vehicle. You may be able to ram it and get a star so that they stop and get out. Then just jack it.)

The bastard was that I had some larger vehicles of collection in there which got replaced by three (!) FBI Ranchers :o(
Has anyone else noticed that the small Verdant Meadows garage seems to swallow blown up cars?

Y'know that mission with the lowriders dancing? A mission before had Cesar doing up CJ's motor but unwittingly getting it impounded. The mission was then to rescue his car from the LS impound.
The on-screen text left in even describes the LS police building and the location of the impound entrance.
Shame, would have been a cool mission IMO. Not half as good as 'The Truth Is Out There' that got deleted though :o(

Here's the text:
Que pasa, Cesar! Hey, Holmes! There's some beers up on the bench right there. Just got to finish up under the hood, eh. So, eerr, how are you and my sister doing? Just fine, CJ. So, how are you and, eerrm - Who are you seeing at the moment? You know me, I ain't found the right girl yet. You ain't never going to find the right girl coz you treat them all like sh.t. Easy, angel, man don't find love, love finds man, eh chico. Yeah, I guess it does... So, CJ, let's see your wheels. They ain't nothing special, just, you know... Let Cesar work his magic, I'll make it special. What the f.ck? Oh sh.t, it's been towed! Damn! What's the matter with this city? They're always towing people's sh.t! I didn't even hear them! Did you hear them? Damn! What are they, the secret car-towing service? f.ck! Damn! Don't worry, holmes. We can get it back. I know where the impound is. It's cool. Be back in a bit, baby... Hey you! Police. Stop! Hey, what are you doing in here? Hey, this is police property! OK punk, have it your way! Hi there. In y'go. How's it going? OK, it's open. Hold on. There you go, pal. Oh, man, C'mon... Somebody shoot the ref! Catch it! Catch it! The Los Santos Police precinct is in Pershing Square in Commerce. Yeah, I know Pershing Square... There's an entrance to the left that leads to the underground carpark. At the back is a garage that holds the impounded vehicles. Ah man, this is gonna be crawling with cops! Yeah I know, but if your prize car is missing when you come back to it, It's probably been towed. A'right man, thanks, I guess I can take it from here. The cops are on to you. Lose the heat! Get to the Pay 'n' Spray. Enter the Pay 'n' Spray. You can use the Pay 'n' Spray in Willowfield. This is the Los Santos police precinct. Also home to the city's impounded vehicles. An entrance at the side of the precinct leads to its secure underground car park. Impounded vehicles are found down here, but it's a hive of cop activity. The garage at the rear is where yours and other impounded vehicles are held. You need a car for Cesar to work on. You're meant to get the car back safely. Get to the impound and retrieve your car. Get a car and take it to Cesar's place. Get back in the car. Get back to Cesar's place. Cesar won't work on this vehicle! Try something else.
> Shame, would have been a cool mission IMO. Not half as good as 'The > Truth Is Out There' that got deleted though :o( Another one was the full version of Fish in a Barrel. Now it's just a short cutscene but before it was a fairly complex mission involving getting Ran Fa Li from the airport to the 4 Dragons without being pestered by Salvatore Leone's gang. Personally I think Ran Fa Li is about as useful to the game as Lance Vance was in GTA VC.

Has anyone ever wondered about this? I mean, I kind of thought it was silly in GTA3, then in vice city I thought it was sillier and now it's just crazy, but why would a criminal who is involved in car respraying etc balk at respraying or repairing a cop car? It doesn't make sense except to make the vigilante missions harder, not being able to repair the vehicle unless it's an FBI unmarked vehicle.
These people live outside the law... what next "Oh no, we mustn't steal the dead person's money, that would be naughty!"

I agree, especially in the case of the one under Sunshine Autos, which you own (and which you still have to pay to use for a regular car) Not really bothered about Vigilante as I always use the Hunter.

I think that's more sense than having the collective finest of the US law enforcement agencies on your tail, and you pull into an empty garage, and when you come out they think "Where the f**k did HE go?" - not only are you the only one around, you're in the same vehicle you were in a few seconds ago, and although it's a different colour, the garage you've just exited advertises its "respray" business on the outside.
Let's face it - if it were realistic in such respects, it would be a simulation, not a game.

I had something surprising (to me) happen a couple of days ago when getting back to SA after a long break. I snuck into the police impound in Los Santos to see what was down there. Of course, got the wanted stars for being such a bad boy. Grabbed a police car, drove out, and proceeded to do enough shooting and what not to boost my wanted stars up even more (I think I was up to 4). Then I drove back down into the garage under the impound lot. Presto, everybody ignored me. Lots of police walking around, but they had no interest in me. I could hear sirens outside, but inside the garage I was apparently safe.
I was wondering if it was just because I was actually in a police car, so I drove over to the corner where the two cops were beating up a girl in a bikini and got out. The guy standing watch waved to me. So I shot him. Then I shot the guy doing the beating. Then to put the girl out of her misery I shot her. Still no interest in coming after me. Finally a police car drove into the garage from outside, and they were after me. So of course I shot them too.
So it appears as though returning to a police impound garage with wanted stars makes you of no interest to the police (at least in Los Santos).

One of my few disappointments, though the general wealth of unexpected stuff more than makes up for it.

You can also park a car in front of the doorway so the hood is in front of the door. Jump on the hood, walk into the car. That is, if you really want the sawed-off shotgun.

It was just one of those early things i noted when i first started playing, when I did collect al weapons before realising doing the tags was the best method for early weapons. I tried again this time as it's a new format for me, playing the xbox version then on my first proper run through and recalling how awkward that gun was to get I had hoped they would have fixed it, but it seemed too small to bother with.
There's another one I haven't reached yet. This one is in Vice City. The outfit you get when you attack the hearse becomes available in a clothing store but on the ps2 I could never collect it in the store, they seemed to have put it being an obstacle inside. I am hoping that one will be cleared up but I'm too busy wrestling with SA to bother going retro again atm :O)

They fixed that in re-releases. Pretty sloppy programming; it installs an invisible barrier at a certain point in the game (The mission you mentioned I think).
I can't work out why either, normally bugs interfere with the game in other ways.

I thought it was because the store was closed prior to the mission but open aferwards. It seems that they removed the "door image" but left the barrier.

It was a pain in the arse. I'd be running from the cops and think, oh, I'll just duck in here and grab that outfit, then have to run out and face the cops when it failed to work.

If you leave the mission which opens the shop ("Two Bit Hit") until after completing "Cop Land", the clothing icon will appear directly in the doorway rather than behind the invisible wall to the left, and you can get to it easily.

I have to leave the actual mission til then? Can you recall exactly what it's called and who the mission is from? It would make it easier for me to miss it out til later, I haven't played the thing for so long until this new pack arrived.

I can only speak for the version I have, which is the PC version that was in the shops on the first day it was available. (although another reply on this thread states that it was fixed at some point)
If you have the glitched version, you have to leave "Two Bit Hit" (which is Averys last mission) until after you have done "Cop Land" (Which is the 3rd Vercetti mission available from the mansion) in order to have the Cuban clothing icon accessible.

Went and changed clothes elsewhere then went back to the shop and I could even see the clothes icon, which I am not sure you could do in the old ps2 version, walked right in and picked it up, yay! Wish i could get sued to all the swapping of controls between SA and VC etc. I put the classic stuff on VC but as I'm playing SA with their enforced buttons it takes some doing swapping between the two.

The swapped controls took the edge off the fun for me in SA. I did more swearing than most of the characters in the game before I finally started getting used to them, and I STILL can't do a driveby right. Now that I've gotten proficient at SA I can no longer drive in Vice City without screwing up. By the time I remember which button does what, I've crashed into something, usually a cop. Sigh. And I don't even want to talk about LCS on the PSP, since it lacks several buttons that were vital to the GTA experience on other platforms.
The biggest obstacle to getting into a game (for me) is getting used to the control layout. I'm getting old and I guess my brain is growing less adaptable or something. That's why I'm looking at buying a Wii, because it looks different enough that maybe I'll enjoy it more. Too bad we won't be seeing GTA on it...

I can do a right sided drive by with just my thumb and have become kind of used to it, but left side has me screwed. I have to try guiding any targets to the right side of my car :O)

> the time I remember which button does what, I've crashed into something, usually a cop. Sigh. yup, that's about the size of it. I don't play either of the older games as much as SA and when I do I can guarantee I'll do something wrong. Mind you, nothing compares to forgetting which button is to present your girlfriend with flowers and which is to slap her upside the head! She wasn't too pleased :O)
And I
> don't even want to talk about LCS on the PSP, since it lacks several buttons that were vital to the GTA > experience on other platforms. Now my son bought one when it hadn't even reached britain and he bought NFSU2 as we had the NFSU on the ps2. He hardly played it, always growling about controls and the game being tipped towards the opponents winning. I thought he was joking but after I bought it for the ps2 and got the hang of controls I had a shot on the ps2 and he wasn't exaggerating. It was awful. bad enough trying to drive on that little screen but everything felt wrong and I was left trailing easily. He sold the machine not long after that so we didn't get to try LCS... maybe that's for the best :O)

We got an eyetoy and it took me longer to get used to controlling things with it than it did the kids. I can just about manage if I stick to games on one machine or the other but with this GTA thing it was a bargain £18 for all three titles in the pack, too good to miss to see how well or badly the ported them over and if I can get used to them. I just about have a handle on SA now, except, as you pointed out, that damned black and white button thing, and remembering which thing you have to press to change guns/radio etc.
age is a terrible thing.
