So, any verdicts on Just Cause yet?

Class-1 - 18 Sep 2006 07:46 GMT So, I've finally gone and bought a 360 to go with my PS2. (Up yours Sony!) I've got Saints Row on order, but was wondering if it's also worth getting Just Cause.
It's a manic free-roaming next-gen free-for-all! =)
A while back me & Cleve fantasised about a cross between Tomb Raider and GTA, set in a tropical setting. Was someone actually listening to our fantasising or is JC just another (poor) GTA clone?
Andrew - 18 Sep 2006 09:02 GMT >I've got Saints Row on order, but was wondering if it's also worth >getting Just Cause. Based on what I have seen in the demo (the full game isn't out yet), Just Cause should be much better than Saints Row, which I have had for 2 weeks, can't get into and am selling. If Just Cause don't work out, I will stick with GTA:SA until GTA4.

just wondering cos i'm quite enjoying it, and the general consensus seems to be that it's pretty good.

Andrew - 18 Sep 2006 12:01 GMT >what's stopping you getting into SR, if i may ask? If GTA3/VC/SA hadn't been released then it would be fine, but as they have been comparisons have to be made, and SR suffers as a result. For me, it just doesn't have fun action, the humour (aside from a few comments by pedestrians and car drivers when they are jacked) and a reason to explore, which is what I do most when playing GTA games.
>just wondering cos i'm quite enjoying it, and the general consensus >seems to be that it's pretty good. Glad you like it, I know a lot of people do, but for me it is a poor mans GTA. I just got Test Drive Unlimited and am enjoying that far more than SR.

I'm sure GTA4 will wipe the floor with it, but it's a good game in it's own right.

TDU did nothing for me, i felt the cars handled like crap and the game was just a bit dull overall.

on the other hand, i've spent about 2 hours on SR today and haven't even touched the main missions yet.
i mean it is a blatant carbon copy of GTA, it's the gaming equivalent of a tribute band, if you ask me. it's pretty good, it feels right, but it just isn't the real mccoy.
still a lot of fun though.

Do they know they're copying GTA and not talk about it, or are they convinced it's original?

Picture it: c0ked-up marketing guy runs into meeting and rants "quick guys! sales are sloppy this quarter! share prices! oh noo! we gotta get something exactly like GTA for our console! hey i know - let's just copy the fecker!". "hey yea!! that guy's a genius!!" meeting adjourned. etc...
What I find curious though is that they saw the need to make a GTA clone, despite GTA being available for the XBox...? 'splain that one. ;)
[Oh and I'm hopefully getting my copy of SR today! 'w00t!']

i'm guessing they made it to make a profit, which it seems they will do as it's sold really well...

Anssi Saari - 19 Sep 2006 17:59 GMT > just wondering cos i'm quite enjoying it, and the general consensus > seems to be that it's pretty good. One review I read said SR seems to be meant for the kind of people who just like to run around and cause random mayhem in GTA games. It also said the plot is lame and the voice acting boring. Well, that's one opinion. Certainly other reviewers seem to like it. I may have to get a 360 and see for myself...
Crackdown also looks like an interesting game for the 360 and by the designer of the original GTA no less.. No missions, just murder some people any way you can with your Superman-like character. From the previews it sounds like a cross between GTA and Hitman. Cartoon-like graphics though.

I may have to get >a 360 and see for myself... i havent found the voice acting to be that bad at all, to be honest. it is pretty generic "gangstas in the hood" sort of fare you've seen and heard a million times before in films, etc, but it isn't that bad.
as for the plot....well it's about recapturing/taking over the city and thats about it really.
most of the minigames are lifted directly from GTA though, but it's done competently enough that as a whole, the game more than stands on its own two feet.
if GTA didn't exist, everyone would be raving about SR, but then if GTA didn't exist, would SR exist either?
ah, now there's one for the existentialists among us ;)

Andrew - 19 Sep 2006 18:41 GMT >if GTA didn't exist, everyone would be raving about SR, Agreed.
>but then if >GTA didn't exist, would SR exist either? Of course it wouldn't. SR is obviously the work of developers that are plagiarists who can't even be bothered to try and copy the latest in the GTA series. Nice graphics, shame about the game world.

Nice graphics, shame about the game world. I doubt SR or any of the other clones would exist without GTA. Someone would eventually have derived something off games like wow or oblivion, or maybe off a 3D platformer, but certainly not the GTA as we know it.
On a more annoying note - got SR yesterday, but if was b0rked during shipping. Gah. I'm starting to think that maybe someone at R* really doesn't want me to get it... =P
