PS2 Freezes randomly when playing GTA:SA

Sethosayher - 13 Sep 2006 15:07 GMT ...or at least semi-randomly.
I bought this particular version of San Andreas off of Amazon...it has some minor scratches, so I don't think its the fault of the disk, though I'll try to get a second opinion as soon as possible.
Anyway, the game will freeze while randomly driving, or when I enter a red marker or building. Its insanely annoying, as I'll often have to restart six or seven times to get something done.
I think its the fault of my PS2, which is fairly old [bought it 3 years ago, used - but never any problems until now]. But, I don't really know about SA's glitches, so I just want to make sure.
Can anyone help or offer any recommendation?
Paul Heslop - 13 Sep 2006 15:28 GMT > ...or at least semi-randomly. > [quoted text clipped - 11 lines] > > Can anyone help or offer any recommendation? sadly as it's an old ps2 and san andreas you have hit the worst combination. It virtually killed my old ps2, which stopped working completely, making awful vibrating noise when trying to play anything. I did find some instructions on cleaning stuff and straightening lazer arms etc and got it to play other games but if I so much as walk past it with san andreas in my hand it yelps and runs off to hide :O)
Of course all games can crash but as it's happening to you a lot I'd say you could try cleaning up the disc, which you can do with some brasso rubbed gently on the silver side with something very soft. I don't know if it's best to stick to the scratched spot or clean the whole surface, but it will remove the scratches, just don't go crazy and wear everything away! i got a bad copy of the getaway to play using brasso.
Obviously you could clean the lens with a cleaning disc but that may not help or you could open her up and have a dabble. Some older machine have a very thing silver ribbon connecting lid to base though so it has to be done with care, but as it is only SA doing this I would say leave well alone internally and try the scratch removal, specially if you're not getting that vibrating noise when it crashes.

Chris F - 13 Sep 2006 15:31 GMT >...or at least semi-randomly. > [quoted text clipped - 11 lines] > >Can anyone help or offer any recommendation? SA is notorious for putting stress on the PS2, due to the way data is constantly streamed off the disc, rather than being loaded in chunks into memory.
if your PS2 is quite old, then chances are it might just be struggling to cope with this excessive disc access. other than getting a new ps2 i wouldn't know what else to suggest.

Sethosayher - 13 Sep 2006 17:10 GMT Do you think I could get sony to replace my PS2? I don't have a warrenty, but I think its kinda messed up that my PS2 is virtually incompatiable with a newer game for the system. If that doesn't work, I guess I'll have to save up for a new PS2...

If that doesn't work, I >guess I'll have to save up for a new PS2... not a chance. you have no warranty with them. they may offer to repair it, but they'll charge you and that'll probably cost almost as much as a new PS2.
even if you did have a warranty with them, it would have run out long ago and i doubt this would be covered by it anyway as it would be classed as "general wear and tear" no doubt.

As ebay is dodgy as always, I wouldn't. What I'd do is get a used one of one of your local small local gamer stores.
Aside from used games, they usually also sell used consoles. Bound to work as these stores also fix/chip consoles so whatever h/w they sell is bound to work OK.
I've got 2 PS2s, but then I don't think I could bring myself to part with either one. Be like losing a favourite pet (except the PS2s are house trained). =)

Be like losing a favourite pet (except the PS2s are > house trained). =) If I were going to buy a used one, even the slimline, I'd be tempted to ask if I can play san andreas in it first before buying, and a good play too, not just a minute or so. On the old machine I found one of the biggest stumbling blocks seemed to be the changing rooms in shops, my game would glitch and crash at those points and it was in one of those where it eventually gave up the ghost and refused to play in my old ps2 ever again.
