GTA San Andreas for PC--Weird Sound Problems?

Sometimes, well.. all the time, actually... during a heavy shootout of any
kind (like when several cops are after me and there's a lot of shooting and
shouting going on), the sound freaks out and all I can hear is one or two
things, like the sound of the car's engine, or the cops talking and a low
hum in the background. I have a Soundblaster Audigy LS. Tonight the game
actually froze while loading a game. I have no choice but to shut off the PC
manually, as it locked up the entired PC. Not sure what happened. It
actually kind of freaked me out. But everything seems to be fine now. Not
sure what to do. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I have a SB Audigy as well, - and did have some sound problems (engine
sounds would disappear) until I upgraded my sounddrivers to the latest from
Creative. It still happens occasionally, - but it is very rare now.

Other "fixes" for sound problems:
Turning down sound hardware acceleration (DxDiag -> sound tab)
Patching version 1 with the "No more hot coffee" patch (apart from
"chilling" your coffee, they allegedly also fixed som sound issues)

I downloaded that patch but it gave an error. It turns out I have the
"Second Edition" which is version 2.00. So that didn't help.
It doesn't happen often, and it bothered me more that the game froze up
while trying to load a game. Vice City for the PC never gave me a single
problem. It's a shame to see this happen, though SA is much bigger I guess,
but still...

I get sound issues similar to yours.. in my case if I'm driving and it
starts to rain then I lose most of the ambient driving sounds (engine
noise, etc). I've noticed this on 2 machines with very different sound
setups, one has an old SB live circa 1999 vintage, the other has an
m-audio multichannel card with breakout box (designed for music
recording).

No lockups though,

After reading extensively (researching, if you will) I have found a solution
that seems to work for a great many people. Run dxdiag.exe (under Start,
Run...) and adjust the soundcard's hardware acceleration down to "Basic".
I'm going to try this myself. I'm still concerned about the game freezing up
during load, though.

The rain glitch can be sorted by updating the game from rockstar, it
did it in mine as well and i installed i think it was v1.1 and all was
good.

Mind that was some time ago so i could be just imagining that was what
i did

Second Edition (version 2.00) won't accept the 1.01 patch.
