-We all know that Driver 1  was an serious step forward, as it led the
way to the creation of GTA in glorious 3-D. Excellent game.
-We know that Driver 2 was weak and flawed, and that Driv3r was
absolutely atrocious.

D4's apparently based in New York, which isn't good IMO - just shows a
complete lack of imagination. NY's been done FAR too many times in the
previous Driver2 and most recently in the absolutely dire TR: SoNY.
Why will no one finally do interesting cities like Tokyo, Honolulu, or
Sydney FFS!!

Leaving the usual gushing launch PR-release over hype aside, how's
Driv4r?

Especially: How does the free-roaming aspect of D4 stack up compared to
SA?

It's a lot like GTA except it's pre-GTA III meaning you can't punch, jump,
swim or fly. It very limited to what you can do on foot. There are
side-missions and races like GTA to earn cash. On foot controls are good.

Nice graphics with lots of street detail, buildings still use very low res
mapping textures though. Car detail is good. Ped detail is ok. Lack of
variance of ped models. An abundance of traffic and parked cars to weave
your way through or steal. City feels more active (alive) than GTA
locations.

No pop-up problems from what I've seen so far or low frame rates. Excellent
load times also.

Driving and car chases are fun, especially through rubbish strewn alleyways.
No annoying lamp posts so far! Police also don't assume that a car you are
getting into is being stolen.

The wanted rating system is a lot better than GTA. If you are driving a car
and committing offences the police will only target the car and not you as
they don't know who's driving. That means that if you lose the cops you can
get out of the car and steal another to lose the wanted rating for that car.

However if you are seen on foot committing offences you will be targeted. If
you then lose the cops and get into a vehicle your wanted rating will still
be there but there will be no rating for the car so the cops won't chase
you.

If you have a wanted rating and are seen taking a car by the police you and
the car will have a rating.

Cars can be modded with engine upgrades, paintjobs etc. and saved.

I personally thought the MAJOR problem with driver 3 was car/bike physics.
It was disgracefull, bouncing up kerbs like basketballs, crashing was just
plain awefull, and manoverability was all wrong!!!... I've always thought
the strength of GTA comes with the car phyics, if you crash or hit something
you always get a feeling thats its your fault, which is great cos ur always
trying to improve ur driving skills, but with games like driver 3, true
crime & the getaway you always feel its the game that is at fault an
therefore takes the fun right out of it. I REALLY REALLY hope they
completely overhauled the physics for driver 4, that would go a great length
in making it an enjoyable game.

Actually a couple of times, well, more than a couple, i have found my
car tripping over none existent things in San Andreas. One of the most
common places is the rail ramp leading down to the docks on San Fiero,
when you hit the bottom, but it has done it at other times too. I find
the driver games more than a handful for general car physics but
enjoyed one and two, three on the other hand stank so much I hardly
even tried to get it off the ground. You still have that stupid thing
where you have to follow another car which always has a head start and
your car seems to be almost magnetically drawn to foreign objects to
slow you down.
