Hey, Everybody, What's the Deal with the Gangs?

What's the deal with the Los Santos gangs in the video game "Grand
Theft Auto: San Andreas"? Since the character OG-Loke is a member of
the Grove Street Families, one would think that they are the
equivalent of the real life Cribs. "Loke", I believe, is a Crib slang
term for other Cribs.

(Think, for example, of the seminal hit "Nothing But a 'G' Thing" by
Doctor Dre and Snoop Doggie Dog, where the pair is referred to as "two
loked-out negroes going crazy". It is known that Snoop Doggie Dog is
affiliated with the Long Beach Cribs, as you can hear from his many
"shout-outs" to "the LBC".)

(On the other hand, Death Row, the label that used to pay them, is
rumored to be bankrolled by Bloods. Why would a Blood record label
have Crib affiliated hip hop artists? Can anyone shed some light on
this?)

But I digress. In the game the Grove Street Families are a small,
beleaguered gang surrounded by the bigger Ballers, which doesn't fit
the Cribs. On the other hand, if they're supposed to be the Bloods,
why is one of them going around calling himself a Crib?

Further, the Grove Street color is green whereas the Ballers - the
biggest gang at the beginning of the game, set in 1992 - dress in
purple. Purple is closer to red, which is the Bloods' color, whereas
green is a color for boys, like the Cribs' blue. Also, the names
"Ballers" and "Bloods" both begin with the letter "b".

Finally, the Grove Street Families are a loose, disunited coalition of
gangs. The Ballers certainly seem to be more united at the beginning
of the game. Does this suggest that Grove Street is Bloods, a
coalition of gangs united by their hatred for the Cribs?

For a white person like myself this is all most confusing. Please
help, LA gang experts. Which "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" Los
Santos gang corresponds to which real life Los Angeles gang?

I do enjoy the damn thing. My enjoyment is enhanced when I notice
similarities between real life and the game. I suspect I'm not alone
in this. After all, there's a reason why the game's designers have
filled it with cities, cars, and products that closely resemble real
ones.

Hillary Clinton takes it seriously...

<http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4682533.stm>

Clinton wades into GTA sex storm

Senator Hillary Clinton has stepped into the controversy over sex scenes in
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
The senator wants the US Federal Trade Commission to find out who put the
explicit material in the game.

The US Entertainment Software Rating Board is already investigating GTA maker
Rockstar over the matter.

Rockstar has denied that it included the graphic content in San Andreas and has
instead accused hackers of altering the code.

Test case

The controversy about the Hot Coffee mod broke earlier this week with the ESRB's
announcement of its investigation.

The board wants to find out if Rockstar broke rules that demand it tell industry
regulations if such material is included in games.

The downloadable mod was put together by Dutch GTA fan Patrick Wildenborg and is
said to unlock mini-games in the recently-released PC version of San Andreas
that lets players make game characters have sex.
The ESRB wants to work out if the sexual content was in the game all along but
hidden or if the mod adds it.

For its part Rockstar said that the Hot Coffee mod only works because hackers
took apart, rebuilt and then recompiled the game's underlying computer code.

Hackers had gone to "significant trouble to alter scenes in the official version
of the game," Rockstar said in a statement.

Mr Wildenborg said all the scenes unlocked by the mod were in the original game
but were simply inaccessible.

Rockstar said it was looking into ways to change San Andreas to stop the Hot
Coffee mod working.

Concerns about minors

As well as seeking to find out who put the content in the game, Senator Clinton
wants the FTC to find out if the game has been given the wrong rating by the
ESRB.

Senator Clinton also wants to find out if game stores are doing enough to stop
minors getting hold of the game.

In a letter to the FTC, Senator Clinton cited a study by the National Institute
on Media and the Family that found 50% of boys between seven and 14 years old
could buy mature rated games.

"There is no doubting the fact that the widespread availability of sexually
explicit and graphically violent video games makes the challenge of parenting
much harder," said the senator in her missive to the FTC.

The mature or "M" rated PC version of San Andreas is only supposed to be bought
by those aged 17 and over.

If the game were to be get the rarely awarded Adults-Only (AO) rating, sales of
the game could plummet. The PlayStation 2 version of San Andreas was the
best-selling game of 2004 in the US.

No, I believe it's a show about people's homes, also known as "cribs".
Also, _First Blood_ was not about Sylvester Stallone's character's
quest to find the founder of the Bloods.

The gang's name, by the way, comes from the fact that in the early
days its members were really young, not from the alternative meaning
"to steal" as many erroneously believe.

No, that's a media invention based on the fact that a lot of the early
gang members carried canes, so it was said that they were "crippin'".
(CJ can carry a cane in "GTA: San Andreas" - another hint, perhaps?)

What has 'crip' got to do with being young? There are loads of origins
cited all over the place, but I've never heard this one. Most are based
around ancronyms (Crazy Ruthless/Real Insane Person for example). Like
I said, I'd suggest reading up (Monster, Do or Die etc etc) if you're
geniunely interested.

I'd take a stab at this being a very random attempt to troll, though,
what with alt.flame being included in the recipients?

The term crip originally came about when a Korean storeowner was
attacked, and described one of the assailants as a cripple - probably
from their gangster-lean crip-walk style.

After it was brought to the attention of the relevant authorities that
children who have this game on the PC can access softcore sex scenes
just by downloading a modification for the game from the Internet,
obviously something had to be done. We're lucky that kids who don't
own this game can't download porn off the Internet.

"Crib" is a bed with high sides meant for babies. I've read that the
gang was at first called the Baby Avenues, which then changed to
Avenue Cribs, which was finally shortened to Cribs.

The acronyms are probably a later attempt to explain the media-created
misspelling "Crip", which after all means nothing. The "Continuous
Revolution in Progress" one is particularly silly. If the revolution
is in progress, of course it's continuous. What gang would take on
such a redundant name?

Let's think about the explanations we offer, people. We don't want to
spread misinformation about this important topic, do we?

> I'd take a stab at this being a very random attempt to troll, though,

I don't read the other newsgroups, so I included a group I do read so
I would see the responses. Other alt.flamers won't mind a bit of
spirited debate on the topic, I'm sure.

There was a show on Bravo(?) I think that featured Grub Smith and the
LA gangs.

Quite interesting I seem to remember.

I think you're thinking *way* too hard about it, I don't think Rockstar
went for much real-life continuity in the game. Obviously it has it's
parallels to LA, but there's not much set in stone that they don't
switch around to suit the game's storyline.

Incidentally, it's Crip, not Crib. Try reading Monster, the biography
of Sanyika Shakur, if you're interested .. it gives a really good
background to the LA gang scene.

Loc (not Loke) isn't (as far as I can tell) particularly crip-specific.
It can be used as short for Loco (crazy, unhinged... i.e. what snoop
used it for) or short for Local and used like Homeboy. Search google
groups for Patrick Atoon's Rap Dictionary on rec.music.hip-hop , it's
probably in there somewhere!

That is possible, I suppose, as the clues are so very confusing, at
least to a person who doesn't belong to a Los Angeles street gang.
It's a shame we don't appear to have any street gang members in
residence.

Does Mr or Ms Shakur use the spelling "Crip"?

It appears that you have a point on the spelling of "loc". I was going
by the somewhat misleading pronounciation.

That would mean that he was talking about two "crazed-out" black

"spit" such a redundant line?

Why?  What is the meaning in the UK?

It has at least two meanings in the US.  One is the term used by gangs for
their criminal adventures.  The second is typically involves one person and
multiple partners (sometimes voluntarily, sometimes forced).

I don't necessarily want to personally meet them. I've heard that some
of them can be quite assertive and unpleasantly violent. However, if
you could ask them what's the deal with the gangs in "Grand Theft
Auto: San Andreas", I'd be grateful.

It could be that his editors insisted on it, to make the book more
palatable to Mr Shakur's white audience. This wouldn't be the first
time that a product of "the streets" is deliberately altered to make
it more palatable and less threatening to suburbanites. Think about
the controlled, subdued choreographies of Motown girl groups, for
example.

How does this work in areas where the residents are rarely, to use
your expression, "G'd up"? Won't friends - of whatever race - be
offended by the suggestion that they enjoy shooting people?

I once saw that happen to a person who knew a professional musician

A person really shouldn't pretend to know something when he's

From what I know of your background, you're probably the best qualified

name came from. I've never really lived in a Crip neighborhood - though

I didn't want to use such a loaded word as "niggaz" for fear of
offending our differently toned readers. (I've been told that it's an
alternative spelling for the racist word "nigger".)

I'm not expert on gang culture (And God knows I should be living so
near Brixton and Streatham) but I think that all the gangs are based on
actual gangs more from film and television more than real life.

I'm probably wrong, but everytime I've heard about these LA gangs it's
been pronounced 'crip'.

In the game, OG Loc was only just released from prison (He tells CJ as
much in the first or second cutscene) and as far as I can ascertain is
not a Grove Street Family member anymore.

I might have to load an old save to check, but I know he's not living
on Grove Street, in fact, the place you drive him home to in one of the
missions is Ballas territory.

I think you're wrong here. In the mission "OG Loc" you first drive
Jeffrey to Freddy's home in Flores. After you've killed Freddy, CJ
suggests that they get back to the Grove, but Jeffrey has to go to his
new job, so you drive him to a Burger Shot. In the "House Party"
mission I got the impression that Jeffrey lives in the house in which
the party takes place, i.e. across the street from the Johnson
residence on Grove Street.
