This may be old to you, but new to me: Can I run MSFS X on a new
Vista Home Prem or Ultimate system with a 64 bit Operating system and
a 64 bit Intel or AMD CPU?
I want to spec out a new system within the next 36 to 48 hours. I am
thinking E8400 Intel or Q6600 Intel. I want to go eVGA 750i SLI FTW
board, and a good GeForce Video card, and perhaps 4 GB of 1066 RAM.
Do I need the 1066 or is 800 good enough?
Which Video card? 8800 or 9800 or can I get by with a bit less, like
an 8600 perhaps?
I do appreciate your help. I want to teach instrument flight with
this thing so need one to hum along fairly well. A free IFR lesson to
anyone who offers truly useable advice.
Thanks

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 with FSX - no problems. I have an EVGA
780i SLI board, Q6600 Quad core, EVGA 8800 Ultra with 768 and 8 gig of
ram (I need the ram for virtual machines for windows and SQL servers).
I'd get the 1066 unless it costs way to much. I have Crucial ram.
I'll pass on the lesson - Brett, ex CFII <G>

Brett:
Thanks. I am thinking very close along those lines. Perhaps the 9800
card or the 8800 O.C one. And only 4GB or 1066.
You seem to have a good system. I am going eVGA FTW board I think
now.
Thanks much.

You're very welcome. I went all the way on ram due to what I do with
it. EVGA makes good equipment and has good help. An Ars Technica
review I read says the 8800 Ultra with ram is still one of the best
perfomers around but I haven't kept up with the 9x series - and then
there's price considerations <G>.

Absolutely!
And, in my own personal opinion, Vista 64 bit is the only way to go, it
really shines and imho is what Vista was meant to be... just make sure,
there are device drivers available, for all your hardware you will need to
run, things like printers, scanners, cameras, etc.
My specs are as follows:
EVGA 780i mb
4gb PC8500 DDR2 ram ( Corsair Dominators 2x2gb ), running at 1066 mhz.
Intel Q9450 quad core 45nm processor, overclocked to 3.40 ghz
BFG 8800 GTS 640 mb PCIe video card
Soundblast X-Fi Extreme Music soundcard
FSX runs very good on my system.
I did a lot of testing with the ram, and found FSX certainly likes the
faster speed 1066 mhz ram. Be aware though, the 700 series boards can be
finicky when it comes to the memory controllers... some , such as myself,
have had no troubles running 1066 mhz ram in it, others have ran into issues
getting the ram to run at 1066 mhz...
If I were buying a new vid card today, I would probably go with one of the
9x series cards, like the 9800 GTX.
