Exploring the USA. Best airports?

I don't necessarliy fly in the US any more frequently than any other
part of the world, but it strikes me that I am probably missing a lot
of great scenery there, as I tend to fly to and from the same dozen or
so US airports. (I am talking about IFR/big jet flights &
international airports now: I have quite a lot of nice add-on scenery
for VFR/Cessna flying and I do do that too).

The international airports I use most often are these:

NY (all), Boston, Washington DC, Phoenix, San Fransisco, Los Angeles,
Las Vegas, Anchorage, Seattle, Houston, Denver, Honolulu, Dallas FW,
Cleveland ... probably a number of others I've forgotten as I type the
list

The States being a pretty big place, there must be some great airports
(possibly default, or more probably those which have some real nice
add-ons for FS9 , and which I have never even visited. Atlanta?
Indianapolis? Baltimore? Kansas City? Memphis? And so on and so on...

I can't visit them all to investigate, so if anyone has any particular
favourites that they think I might be missing out on, I'd be glad to
hear about them - as I say, especially if there is a good default
airport already there or a great download I should have.

Thanks!

Man are you gonna be overwhelmed by this question.

Let me be the first to wish you well...

I fly the heavies mostly, for two VA's.  I like to lean to the Cargo side so
I will include some cargo airports for you.  One VA is based in Denver and
never flies cargo.

Anchorage - There is a new version out but I am not happy with any of the
scenery files for Anchorage.  The other sceneries are pretty good - Skagway,
Ketchikan and Hood are exact since I've seen these personally.  I would like
to see a better rendition of Fairbanks.  Its OK but real enough for me.

Now, if you would like one scenery download that I would highly recommend
for small GA flights is Mt Hood from Hovercontrol.  This is great stuff.

I am listing several I have and fly often:
-Boston V2.1 by Grisham
-Baltimore/Washington DC with a good mesh of the area.
-Miami with a very good mesh of the area including Ft Lauderdale
-Atlanta - sorry its been so long I cant remember but try Avsim

I just added this in right before I sent this email.  I almost forgot one
of the Largest.
-KDFW

Now Gary Widup has a great scenery for Denver
-KDIA scenery for KDEN (This is used to fly Online in Vatsim.  Its that
widely accepted.  I overlay this airport with MegaScenery Denver).

-LAX has a great scenery

there are four downloads that interact each other for
-KLAS Vegas

-Seattle with a great scenery
-KABQ - is a great Cargo
-Memphis has a good scenery.  Good Cargo
-FedEx Triad KGSO - Great Cargo although its based as a FS2K2 with an
update.  The update is hard to get now, and the new scenery is a Lago sound.
-Toronto - Good Cargo
-Project Montreal is no longer available on the Net.  I have tried and cant
find them.  If you can they had a great version for FS2K2 and then upgraded
it for FS9.  Very highly detailed and for any of our Northern Partners might
have it.
I just downloaded a new version of
-KONT

Now I am a New Yorker and we live about 15 miles due east of KLGA, and as a
NY City Carpenter I had worked over at US Air in LGA.  Ansari's scenery is
exact for KLGA.  Including a great rendition of Shea Stadium.

Then you have the Freeflow sceneries.  The only one I have is the Freeflow
Bahamas.  I already have a great scenery for Bermuda which is exact since
I've been there.

There are several versions of detail for Manhattan.  Avsim and Flightsim
have a lot.

BTW, you can look all of these up at the Walhalla site.

Yep, I thought that I'd be opening up a hornet's nest - but for me at
least it will be very well worthwhile reading people's comments.

Thanks for being No.1  !!

I should add by the way, that at least at the airports I listed (and
some others I forgot, like Salt Lake City), I have already great
scenery and probably all the latest updates. I was really wondering
about other maybe slightly less obvious locations

Like what?

Right now I am looking at Russia for a specific scenery.  Avsim has an RU
site but everytime I try to go in and do a translation the scenery that I
want is no longer there.

I am looking for the place that is now making the new Sukhoi Superjet-100.
Its a new competition to the CRJ and Embraer.  Pretty funny, there calling
it the RRJ.  Russian Regional Jet.

For Those Interested:

Komsomolsk-on-Amur city in Khabarovsk kray (territory), far eastern Russia,
on the Amur River. Founded in 1932 on the site of the small village of
Permskoye.

For the city of Khabarovsk there is only one Airport.

I'm not sure how to evaluate an airport. Pilot Pete's at 06C makes a pretty
good burger and the drink prices are not unreasonable. Fly in, park, and run
down to your kitchen and cook up a $100 burger. If you're here IRL, drop a
note and I'll come join you.

I like the airports in or very near the add-on scenary I installed. NPS is
right on Pearl Harbor, in the heart of the first MegaSceneryX title.
Abbottsford, CYXX, makes good use of a freebie landclass I snagged from the
fsForce guy. Paine Field, KPAE has an aircraft carrier parked in the harbor.
KFHR, Friday Harbor, was the default free flight, where I "earned" my
"wings" in the 172. MegaScenery's PNW covers KPAE, KFHR, and KPWT, my
Seattle Triangle. KORS, Orcas, also in the San Juan islands, has some nice
enhancements, with gulls and sea mammals from the birds add-on downloaded
from avsim. I also like KHHR, Hawthorne, tucked right in tight under the LAX
class B; a very high resolution photo-scenery set of the LA basin on AVSIM
makes for good precision visual flying by ground reference, or I can bring
the clouds down and run the approaches at any of the numerous, extremely
close by other airports. KOSH has its infield parking filled in preparation
for the fly-in. Last, 06C is my home airport. The default landclass and
autogens look really good on a spring day, but it might as well be a generic
airport anywhere else. And that's why I'm perplexed by your question. What
makes one FS airport better than another?
Martin S. - 25 Feb 2007 11:22 GMT
>What
>makes one FS airport better than another?

I assume that's a rhetorical question? If not, then basically one
that, firstly, has some degree of similarity to the real world one;
secondly, one that has facilities like jetways, taxiways & taxiway
signs and proper gates (assuming they exist in the original), Thirdly,
that the scenery doesn't kill your frame rates..

I could continue. Whatever, thanks for the suggestions. Your list will
keep me online for an hour or two Scott.

As for Russia,  I bought this scenery from SimMarket

SSWSetup-MGS2004.zip - not freeware but excellent; includes good
Moscow city scenery & UUEE.

Novosibirsk UNNT - unnt_134758.zip (AVSIM) -  One of the best freebie
sceneries available of any airport anywhere IMHO.

Martin,

To look around for any sceneries you dont have, you can go to
flightaware.com and look up your home airport or the one you choose to call
home.  Look at the destinations listed and the planes used and see if you
can pick any airports that interest you from the listings.

Don't think I've seen that site. I do use
http://walhalla.mine.nu/fs2004.php very regulalrly..

We use www.flightaware.com for getting real life flight plans and then
incorporating them into FS.  It gives you the ability to search out
Airports, Airlines and then actual Flight Numbers.

Depending on where I am at the moment virtually that is.  I will go to
flightaware and look around so I can catch the next available flight out
using real flight plans.

Right now I am trying to fly from KCLT because the one VA has been using
that as a Hub for Nascar and then flying over to KONT to deliver fans for
the race later today.

I particularly like the ability to get real-world flight plans into
FS9. I make up my own flight plans (as do most people I assume) and
99% of the time I use a shortcut to my favourite flights (***.flt) to
start up FS9. (I have hundreds of them saved).

I am never quite sure how true to life my own plans are however.
Sometimes when I am flying long-haul (real world) I make a note of
exactly where we go, so that I can make up the plan when I get back!
(Am I sad or what?)  Doing it online is a lot less hassle!

Not so in the end. Never can tell, can you?!
