W. Blaine Dowler - 13 Jun 2004 13:58 GMT Hi all,
I'm trying to pay off O'Aka's debt before I get to the Zanarkand hot spot. (35,000 down, 65,000 to go. It'll take about 10 more hours, if I can keep pilfering from the Tonberries on Mushroom Rock Road.) I'm concerned because it looks like I'll be able to completely stock up on everything he sells and still have some of his debt to pay off. Will he start carrying new stock any time soon, or will I have to sell off my merchandise to other dealers to make room for more from him?

"No, it is a very interesting number, it is the smallest number expressible as a sum of two cubes in two different ways." - Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887-1920), Indian mathematician. The mathematician G. H. Hardy had referred to the number '1729' as 'dull'.

He doesn't get any new merchandize until much later in the game, so you'll have to keep buying what he has, and sell it to other dealers (such as barkeep just across the room). Once you've bought 100,000 gil worth of stuff, he'll still only have the same junk, but at a very discounted price, so you can buy from him, and sell to barkeep for a profit, thus regaining much of the gil you spend on repaying his debt.

So I've noticed. :)
I got lucky with the Tonberries, and paid off his debt in three hours. Now I've got over 300,000 gil, and a key to save up for. I've never seen a Final Fantasy game where gil was this easy to come by.

You can get it for free later in the cave down in the ravine by the Calm lands (just before you get to the mountain).

I'm sure that it's insanely overpriced at the start of the game because some story event will drag the price down later. I'm also sure it'll give me access to something I'm not expected to have access to for quite some time, though, so it's well worth the 15-20 minutes of buying from O'aka and selling to the barkeep. :)

If you don't want to know what the Besaid key will get you, don't read any further. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
It gives you access to another cave on Besaid with fiends you probably shouldn't expect to beat until later in the game anyways. The "price" at the end is, if memory serves, another garment grid...

If you get a level 5 Pr rank you get a story sequence then you can buy one of two Garment Grids (depending on which company you sided with). They are 2 million gil each (200,000 GP). I suppose you could always play the games and Win the 200,000 Points but it's a lot easier to just buy them. -- Ramen Junkie

Just a question, as I've tried this but haven't made it to chapter 5 (yet) to answer my own question:
I already have Open Air over 800 points though I lost half when I switched over to Argent ( at the beginning of chapter 2), so I'll still have 400, making it max out at level 5. At the rate I'm going I know I'll max Argent out at levl 5 and definitely over 400 points as well. So will this unlock both of them at maximum when they combine, and will I be able to access all the items that each will have?
To be honest it wasn't that difficult, especially after paying off O'aka's debt, maybe 5 hours total and mastering the thief class on all 3 as a result.

I don't know. Possibly. It's also possible that it will default to the one with the most points. -- Ramen Junkie

Keep in mind this is a VERY slow way of earning gil. Sure you don't have to hassle with battles but I imagine the actual return is close to the same. I think it took me an hour to earn a measly million or some sh.t. -- Ramen Junkie

I think it took me an hour to earn a measly million or some sh.t. This takes about a minute to get 17,000 Gil. Having just barely started Chapter 2, that makes it the best return per minute I have access to. The next runner up is pilfering ~1,000 Gil from a Tonberry, but they're rare, so the hourly rate is lower.
It took me three hours to get 100,000 Gil from the best paying battles I can get to (without actually going to the desert or Zanarkand.) It took about 20 minutes to earn triple that buying and selling. I've no doubt that there will be better options near the end of the game, but at this stage, few battle pay more than 200 Gil.

Yeah I suppose early on it's more beneficial. I don't think I started doing it till pretty late. Fighting also gives the benefit of exp and AP -- Ramen Junkie

I got 200,000 gil in 1 minute really easily... I went to Guadosalam and bought and sold data (saving between each success) One of the data item clues the vendor gave was "This is the last person you'd expect to buy this data" I thought, well that would be you. Why sell me the data then buy it back for ten times as much? Since I'd just saved it I thought whatthehell. Sure enough, the vendor bought it back off me. Easy money! You may need to keep restarting the game until this randomly comes up Or maybe it appeared because I got the other two clues right first time. I dunno
