After the volcano, before Ordeals. I went from defeating Lich to Crescent Lake to Defeating Kary. I went one trip through the Ice Cave to get the treasure but had to leave (to go do something) so I left the cave and saved it. I'll make another trip through for the Float Stone. The real question is do I want to bother trekking all the way back to a town to revive Thief or do I just want to go ahead and get the Float Stone without him. Have you noticed that the final dungeon in the updated version of FF1 is incredibly hard? That's probably the hardest FF ending area I've seen. FF1 was never much of a problem for me at the end. I use four monks, so the first hours are the hardest. I can get wiped out by a lucky set of imps at the start of the game, but as long as I build up to level six or seven before I go anywhere, I can walk through the rest of the game with little or no effort.
