This will be the second time I've completed FF1 in the last 6 months.

The updated version is quite nice actually.  I hope that FF2 is at least as
nice.

I'm about 2/3rds of the way through FF1 so it won't be long before I start
2.  I'm about to get the Float Stone.

Before or after the castle of ordeals and the volcano?

After the volcano, before Ordeals.  I went from defeating Lich to Crescent
Lake to Defeating Kary.  I went one trip through the Ice Cave to get the
treasure but had to leave (to go do something) so I left the cave and saved
it.  I'll make another trip through for the Float Stone.  The real question
is do I want to bother trekking all the way back to a town to revive Thief
or do I just want to go ahead and get the Float Stone without him.  He's
probably the most useless person in my party.

Have you noticed that the final dungeon in the updated version of FF1 is
incredibly hard?  Or perhaps I didn't level up enough before going in.

I haven't played it yet.  My first play through was on my NES copy a few
months ago.  I suppose the memo save feature could help with the last
dungeon a bit but I recall that yeah, it's always been excessively long and
difficult what with having to kill all four fiends, countless dragons and
Chaos at the end.

You ever play FF3j?
The last "dungeon" would give you a heart attack.

Made it without the save state feature, after three tries. You'd think
with all that sh.t you have to go through that Dark Cloud would be EASY.

Hell, yes!  That's probably the hardest FF ending area I've seen.  FF1 was
never much of a problem for me at the end.  I use four monks, so the first
hours are the hardest.  I can get wiped out by a lucky set of imps at the
start of the game, but as long as I build up to level six or seven before I
go anywhere, I can walk through the rest of the game with little or no
effort.  Chaos tends to die before fighting back.
