On behalf of AGFF, I'd like to congratulate Sky Render and the folks at RPGOne for wasting several years of their lives translating a game that didn't need to be translated. Good job, guys!

wamiq - 04 Jun 2004 03:52 GMT Actually, FF6j is arguably the best RPG of all time, and the American version had bafflingly poor translation and had important elements removed. So this project was sorely needed. Basically, you're wrong.

Maybe I could let you get away with saying that it's the best FF (even that's iffy), but best RPG in general? Either you haven't played many RPGs or you have extremely poor taste.
BTW, FFT's translation was bafflingly poor. FF6's was quite good considering the restrictions that Woosley worked under. The retranslation wasn't needed at all, and cleared up a few minor points at best. Prove me wrong by giving a few examples of major changes made to the script.

Anyway, the comedy mistranslated monster names are the best thing about the FF games: Catcherpillar, Marlboro. Also things like Shiva (which I assume is some kind of misspelling of Shiver).

Dear Square, please make a game with a refined Junction system, thank you. And don't have a male protagonist who is a) a whiny bitch, b) an obnoxious dickweed or c) both of those. Also, a traitorous usable character. Hmm. That could be cool. And more deaths.

Homyguy Z - 14 Jun 2004 03:05 GMT > Actually, FF6j is arguably the best RPG of all time, FF6 was one of the most uneven games in the series. The lack of a main character was a good idea, the one or two defining character traits of the human characters and the abundance of walking gimmicks was not. The split between the Balance and Ruin was a good idea, the way the 'nonlinearity' in Ruin was implemented, letting you basically pick the order in which you complete basic, unfulfilling 'character quests' rather than giving any real freedom was not. The Esper system was the first taste of the more free-range customization of FF7 or 8, but the ultra-powerful innate skills of people like Edgar, Gogo, Sabin, or Shadow pretty much eliminated the point of letting you pick your favorites. Why use someone who doesn't have access to the most powerful attacks, and never will? And then all the ultra-damage combinations of relics and weapons nullified that for any of the later-game challenges anyway, the same thing that FF7, 8, and 10 get accused of doing, only those have better plots and battle systems.
> and the American > version had bafflingly poor translation and had important elements > removed. So this project was sorely needed. Basically, you're wrong. So is there an actual text copy of the new script floating around or would I have to play the patched rom to see the 'changes'? I kinda want to check it out for myself.
Better still would be a list of examples why the project was justified like Rob was asking for, but I wouldn't hold my breath for this.
