When to level up?

Leveling up is a question I wanted to ask about Final Fantasy X for a
while now. I seemed to have weak characters to start with so I began
battling for hours. This gets boaring after a little while, but I set
a goal (e.g. 10levels up for the weaker characters) and then level up
with quite a few places to move on the sphere grid. No matter what I
do, the fiends in the next section seem too strong to start with so
I'd start the level up process again. This has resulted in Tidus
getting very strong which is excellent, but the others are falling
behind. Tidus wipes out many fiends with one blow, but the others
can't even seem to manage to get damage above 1000 in most cases
(Tidus even does 9999 if it's an overkill, but is generally above 4000
on average fiends). I keep trying to level-up others, but I can't do 3
at a time without Tidus for risk of being wiped out. any suggestions?
Currently I'm in the burning Al Bhed city being attacked by the Guados
where there are strong fiends worth many experience points.

Hmmm, I have played the game for 30 hours, and I'm a lot longer into the
game than you, and I've never had any problems with the enemies. I haven't
leveled up at all, I just follow the story as fast as I can. I think you
need to think a little bir more about how you play. Are you, for example,
always using Wakka against flying enemies? Lulu against elemental monsters?
If you do these things the game is really easy, even without leveling up at
all.

One of the best leveling up spots is coming up for you. It's in Bevelle. Dance
around the save sphere there for a while you'll get really strong really quick.

that is a good spot, but...

*kinda small spoiler*

i kinda remember not having kimari available for that area.  no big deal
though as you can level up the other charactors real fast.  someone mentioned
this strategy already, but it is definately worth repeating: bring in your
crappy charactors and just hit triangle to have them defend which also brings
their next turn up quickly.  then just swap them out.

Thanks for all the advice. My characters aren't that weak that they
get wiped out quickly, but ambushes can be quite damaging. All I need
now is a level three sphere lock so I can power up Tidus with 32
levels to move around because it's been blocking the way. If not, then
I'll use transport or something. My characters are quite good after a
bit of leveling up and learning new abilities. Kimari is basicallly
the only weak one. Don't know if I'll bother wasting more time
leveling him up.

Why do you need to level up so much?  I almost cleared the entire game
without ever spending extra time to level up (although I did spend some
extra time to gain certain items).

FFX is not like the original Japanese FFIII.  Just follow the story and
you can beat the game quite straightforwardly.  Some of the battles may
be tough, but you can usually beat them with some good tactics, without
resorting to extra time in levelling up.

But without levelling up you won't have those extra moves to use with those
tactics and one hit will knock you out.

if you can kill the Dark Aeons, Nemisis and even Penance without
levelling up i'll give you a million pounds, does that sound fair
pal!!
