I'm confused... are you talking about FFX-2? Thats a sequel... to FFX... FFXI is not a sequel, and it likely won't *have* a sequel...
Uh... right....

Coren - 26 Nov 2003 19:05 GMT > Well, of course you won't. Who would say a sh.t game is awesome once, > let alone three times? Just out of curiosity, in all seriousness for a minute... have you ever played the game? Yes I know it takes 6gb of space, takes 3 days to install, costs $13/month, etc etc etc.... I admit, I don't like that too much either, but NONE of that has to do with the game itself. Obviously you don't like it either, but for me, the game itself provides enough entertainment for me to justify playing it. If you can't justify it, fine, but don't criticize the game (hell, ANY game, not just FFXI) if you've never once played it.

[quoted text clipped - 3 lines] >Rob >ploovTeHSPaeMBLoKuR@charter.net Because if you didn't like to play games that you have to gain levels in then you wouldn't sit in a game specific forum and bitch about one game. There is "alt.games.rpg" forum that would be glad to listen to you and defend RPG's/ or MMORPG's for that matter.
This group is not about what type of games you like. It is Final Fantasy series. Saying that you dont like it because it is a MMORPG is fine, but then nit picking about everything that makes it a MMORPG is just pointless. Anyone that reads these threads trying to decide to buy it or not isn't getting any useful information. IF someone is thinking of trying it they obviously already got past the fact that there is a fee to play, it may take a day to gain a level, and quests are long, that is what makes it an MMORPG.
Now talking about world passes, job classes, magic, abilities, summons, etc. compared to other FF games assuming of course you actually played FFXI i would consider a valid argument . Of course once again saying you dont like FFXI because it is MMORPG isn't an invalid argument (i think even people who like FFXI thinks it should have been called FFO). You have stated your point that you dont like MMORPG's, so lets actually talk about something in the game. I dont read this forum to hear you bitch about how much you dont like MMORPG's.
Whether i liked FFXI or not i would still be telling you this same thing.

[quoted text clipped - 30 lines] >Whether i liked FFXI or not i would still be telling you this same >thing. One problem: My talking about how crappy MMORPGs are does nothing to stop anyone else from making specific criticisms or defenses of FFXI. Instead of complaining about how I shouldn't rant about MMORPGs, perhaps you should actually make some posts about FFXI.

It is Final

If these things are bad things, then they make this FF game bad. If there are qualities about a particular subgenre of RPGs that are to the detriment of a game under that genre, then I think it is worthy of discussion.
Anyone that reads these threads trying to decide to
> buy it or not isn't getting any useful information. IF someone is > thinking of trying it they obviously already got past the fact that > there is a fee to play, it may take a day to gain a level, and quests > are long, that is what makes it an MMORPG. I highly doubt this is always the case, or even usually the case. The only thing that is common knowledge about MMORPGs for the general masses is that you have to pay-to-play. I also don't agree that taking a day to gain a level is what makes a game an mmorpg. The essence of such a game should be that you are interacting in a persistant world with a large number of other players.
> Now talking about world passes, job classes, magic, abilities, > summons, etc. compared to other FF games assuming of course you > actually played FFXI i would consider a valid argument . I think someone meantioned world passes already. Job systems are usually trashed here across all genres (not by everyone, of course). The rest, well, that would require an investment of time and money that few of us seem to be willing to relinquish.
You have stated your point that you dont like

Coren - 27 Nov 2003 09:26 GMT > http://www.lameazoid.com/FF11_1.html OK, I haven't had time to read thru all the way yet, but so far, my first, and easiest, impression is that the guy that wrote it is an idiot. Half the stuff he says can be directly contradicted by simply playing the game and paying better attention. At one point in page 2 he claims theres no map function. No, he's just too f.cking stupid to use it... it's there, and its very useful. Any competent 12 yr old can accomplish opening the map after 2 hours of play. The list of incorrect babble even after the first page and half the second is too lengthy for me to write all of, but to put it simply, about half of what he says is wrong, and teh other other half he really overestimates (except the lvling and hiking taking too long, but what do you expect, its an MMORPG).

-Long level gaining - you fight worm and bugs for 5 lvls what do you expect (long lvl'n maybe after 15) -No map - we went there -lossing items- BS it tells you when your going to drop an item and your inventory is to big. -Red mage spells do the same damage as an attack- BAH!!! -Selling items(crystals) he cant get money - selling crystals to shop will give you 10-30gil - selling them at auction house will get you 50-300gill each. Just an example
Nothing i mentioned is hidden it is called skim the instruction book or common sense.

There are two intuitive ways of stacking items: (a) Have the game stack them automatically when you pick them up and (b) allow you to click-and-drag items together.

The Legend of Ramen 300 - 30 Nov 2003 03:03 GMT > The other two aren't contradictions. It should be noted that for the most part each page of the review repreents one session of gameplay. IE The map feature was not known about on day one.

Auto stacking is the way it SHOULD be. There isn't any reason for then NOT to stack.

Dying means losing experience and probably dropping at least one level. You probably go off and fight slightly tougher enemies at this point but that would also involve 5 minutes of standing around using the /heal command REPEATEDLY ie after every battle.

Also I had pretty shitty spells, none of which I found or anything they were given to me by someone else. I would not have had any other magic otherwise. Anyway One was cure, one was some sh.t called "Dia" or somehting that was basically "poison". I only knoew it wa poison because someone told me, because the name is pretty unexplainatory.

Coren - 27 Nov 2003 09:34 GMT > > OK, now explain what you didn't like about it.... without using the argument > > "MMORPGs Suck in general" or something close to that. Well, now for reply 2 (I got kindof hasty in my first reply, and have since read the entire article). I'm now completely convinced this guy is a complete dumbass. In the first page he's claiming theres no map, then he clearly says he used the map in page 3... make up your damn mind. Anyway, if somebody wants me to post a paragraph by paragraph argument to this guys "review", I will. But, from somebody thats already played FFXI way too long for my own good, done 30-40 missions, etc etc, and gotten my main character up to lvl 25 (max lvl is 70, so in the grand scheme of things, this isn't too bad), the game is good, and the writer of that "review" really has no f.cking idea what he's talking about basing an entire review on 5 hours of playtime...
Really, I'll post an entire counter-review to explain everything he complained about (if somebody thats considering playing the game asks, anyway). The ONLY 2 things he was right on was the lvling is slow, and the hiking is slow... and even then he grossly over-exaggerates how bad it is... that or he's even more incompetant than I thought and went the wrong way, even though he clearly was using his map (by the 3rd page at least).

Bingo. It's a Final Fantasy group yet the bulk of the people in the group want nothing to do with the game, for reasons covered months ago when the beta testers where on the defensive. Finally some light shines through on this argument.

Oh, come on, people only find those things unpalatable because they've gotten a bad rap from the media. Just like Michael Jackson! He'd be the first to tell you not to knock something before you've tried it, and his lunatic fans are parading around everywhere with "HE'S INNOCENT!!!" banners. I think that says something important about society.
